Because of his alleged (I don't know if it was proven in a court of law) involvement a couple years ago in illegally smuggling diesel oil across the Pak-Afghan frontier - a pretty lucrative scheme.

Well, hes pretty sentimental about it, and he had challenged anyone to prove it, and I guess during recent times no one actually proved it, and its died out... Its been a while since I saw an article that referred to him as Maulana Diesel, though I must its funny :)

Though I have to say, given the sheer amount of wheeling-and-dealing between Jamali's government and the MMA, I just can't help but suspect that Maulana Rehman is being sent out as an "unofficial" envoy by Islamabad....

Well he went to Paris the other week, where some of Musharraf's entourage had arrived before his arrival in Paris a day or so later. ;)

Watch out Maulana Fazl, Maulana bijli is here!

Well, even it’s so-called allies i.e. the PPPP and PML (N) seem to be coming to that conclusion…

PPPP and PML-N might ask MMA to choose sides](http://www.dailytimes.com.pk/default.asp?page=story_20-7-2003_pg7_27)

In relation to this thread, and Maulana Diesel’s earlier trip to Paris I found this part amusing…

“The MMA has announced to hold public conventions against the LFO in the four provincial capitals, and later stager such gatherings in all district headquarters of the country during July but the main leadership of the alliance is abroad at the moment,” sources said. Sources said the APC convened by the MMA in Lahore on July 6 had decided that the opposition parties would launch a campaign against the government but MMA Secretary General Maulana Fazlur Rehman later refused to launch such a campaign.

:hehe:

If the statements of this article are true then let me be the first to say that me and my m16 will be the first to put this sham mullah out of his worldly miseries..He will be closer to his Allah while burning in hell

This so called “deobandi” is ticking me off..first by mocking my beliefs and now by these statements (read bold). I would love to give him the “Gujerati treatment” the next time we are both in Pakistan…then we’ll see whose going to talk

Fazl wants roundtable on Pak-India ‘reunion’
From Faizul Haque

NEW DELHI—After raising optimism in India about his utility in the recent peace process in the Sub-continent, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman has termed Pakistan as a “failed state” because it was not able to put restrictions on cross-border terrorism.

Referring to the Indian allegations of support to cross-border terrorism against Pakistan, the Maulana said “I grant Pakistan is a failed state, but there is also a force in India, seven lakh in all, why don’t they stop infiltration?”

Reacting on some of the comments on his stand about Taliban, Fazlur Rehman urged that these two issues are different and have no link with each other. “Kashmir is Kashmir while Taliban is very different,” he said in interviews to evening newspaper Sunday Mid Day published from Mumbai and IANS.

To a question about eliminating Indo-Pak frontier and transforming it into one country, Maulana Fazlur Rehman said, “It is very unrealistic approach. It is very easy to think in such terms but difficult to implement it.” He said it would be much better if prominent leaders of both the countries hold Round Table Conference to ponder and asses whether maintenance of separate identity is better or they should unify on the pattern of Germany.

“The Pakistan government has also placed restrictions on them (Taliban), they are running helter skelter, hiding in caves. In the Kashmir valley, there are people who oppose India. They have formed organisations, that is not ending,” he added.
The JUI chief said “blaming Pakistan and accepting your inability is not a way out. We accept there is a problem, a conflict between us (India and Pakistan). “As ordinary people we can only propose things. We say to the Indians, come let us talk, end the conflict,” he added.

Maulana Fazlur Rehman who has stunned many by his remarks on the Kashmir issue also stated that there was “realisation” that the “leaders of both India and Pakistan have not done much to solve the (Kashmir) problem.”

Urging both New Delhi and Islamabad to address the settlement of Kashmir issue, the Maulana said “they need to think deeply and they are obliged to come up with solutions, consider the options.” He expressed confidence that both India and Pakistan were serious about it. “They will begin searching for an answer, and when one searches hard and honestly for a way, one is bound to succeed,” he asserted.

Maulana Fazlur Rehman who is also senior leader of the Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA) was given a rare audience by Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on Sunday. According to an Indian media report, Vajpayee was happy with Maulana’s “enthusiasm for peace”. His appreciation for the Shimla Agreement and opposition to third-party intervention is also being seen as very positive by the Indian Prime Minister.

On the contrary, JUI leader, who after initial apprehensions and skepticism is enjoying warm welcome by different political circles in the country, has also met extremist Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) leaders including President Vishnu Hari Dalmiya and Vice President Acharya Giriraj Kishore in New Delhi.

After meeting with these VHP leaders, Maulana Fazlur Rehman told newsmen that he talked with them on an environment of love and harmony. “We are very happy and we have discussed only ways to find peace in the region,” Maulana said and termed the meeting as very encouraging.

The VHP leaders also said that they shared the views of the Maulana on issue of peace in the region. Asked for his reaction about the meeting, Dalmiya said “ours is the same mission as that of our Pakistani friends of having a peaceful atmosphere.” ”We welcomed our Pakistani brothers to uphold the tradition of our country to give all respects to the guest,” he added.

Maulana Fazlur Rehman has expressed his strong desire to meet K Sudershan, head of another extremist Hindu organisation RSS and Kanchi Shankaracharya Jayendra Saraswati. He has also sought appointments with Deputy Prime Minister L.K. Advani and Congress President Sonia Gandhi.

Another Indian daily newspaper The Asian Age said in its report that the Indian government was optimistic that the “Maulana will use his influence over the terrorist groups in Pakistan to ensure a level of peace in Jammu and Kashmir in the coming months.”**
Quoting authoritative sources, the newspaper said “the JUI leader had given no assurances but, after the high-level meeting, can be expected to carry back a message of peace to Pakistan that the authorities here hope to see implemented in the coming weeks, if not days.” “Despite being in the Opposition, he is here with the tacit support of the Pakistan government which has maintained a stoic silence on the visit,” The Asian Age added.
