fasting when pregnant

hi guys
I am 19 weeks pregnant. Should i fast during ramandan. My SIL said that i shouldnt fast as it the baby needs food as well.

i dont want to miss fasting as its hard to make up later on, so i want to fast.

do people normally fast during ramandan?

Re: fasting when pregnant

I did not fast during Ramadan when I was pregnant. I do know a friend who did and she did great. You can make up later and though that may sound hard, it could work out for you, a couple of days every month.

For my first pregnancy, I was in the last month during Ramadan, and I was diabetic so I had a meal schedule, blood tests, etc. During the second pregnancy, I just didn't do it. Wasn't up to it. So I let it pass.

Re: fasting when pregnant

Id go with ur SIL...

I didnt fast during my pregnancy either. But my cousins did and they did ok. But really, I think pregnant women are excused from fasting during pregnancy... i am not 100% sure.. and u can always make it up later..

Re: fasting when pregnant

Its not the food food that is really important but Water/hydration that is really important. These are long rozas and please donot keep them. The thing is since we are allowed to not keep them during pregnancy, we should follow that.Instead as is suggested that you should give money in charity.( I dont recall properly if its kisi ka roza kholain or money in charity)

Re: fasting when pregnant

Ask99, that's what I did, I gave money for food. I don't remember the details, hubby does.

one has to make up the missed roza even if they gave money or fed poor?. is this true or not?????

Islam Question and Answer - Fasting of Women

I just looked this up. maybe it’ll help u -
I am not 100% sure but I think if you give the fidhya; fasting is not obligatory, but I will research and give u more info on that soon!.. incase anyone else knows 100% please do reply

Re: fasting when pregnant

I would love to knwo the answer to this since i am looking for info on this too. Hubs asked the sheikh at our masjid and he suggested that if i am not working, i can try to sleep during the day as m uch as possible and stay up at night and be able to keep rozas. My main problem is not food mostly but water. If i dont get water every so often, i get extremely dehydrated and can feel the effects.

Re: fasting when pregnant

I gave fidhya too.If you're pregnant , it's advisable not to fast..at least I wouldn't.
But my best friend did and she was fine, so I guess it depends.
I agree with others about hydration, and these are going to be long rozay, I would think it's probably better to be safe, for the babys sake.

me too i didn't fast while i was preganant. i gave money.

Re: fasting when pregnant

No, you don't fast during pregnancy..however, you have to makeup for it later.

Depends totally on you. Some people are able and some are not. Beside it depends how far u are in ur pregnancy as well. My friend kept hers two yrs ago when she was 5 months preggy .. she did totally fine :)

Re: fasting when pregnant

As a mom who has a child with special needs, I'd not want to take a chance on this. When you fast, your baby will not get the proper nutrients and hydration at the proper times. And this can surely impact the development of the baby. Sure, you can fast and feel ok, and even in many or most cases, all will be fine. But why take the chance yeah? A pregnant woman needs many more calories and much more hydration - throughout the day - to ensure a healthy pregnancy. Yes it is inconvenient to make it up and its costly to give monetary gift instead of the fast - but isnt it better than taking a gamble with the health of your baby? Motherhood means sacrifice and compromise and this starts at the moment of conception, not at the moment of birth. IMHO.

Re: fasting when pregnant

aiklarkithe, like everyone said, you are allowed to skip ramadan fasting if you are pregnant, so you can either make it up later by fasting or giving the money. If you are healthy enough to fast, then fasting is the preferred method of making up missed rozas, but giving the money to feed the hungry is acceptable as well. Those details can be discussed with a molvi.

Re: fasting when pregnant

This is what I've heard about the fasting from an Aalim. If someone does miss out the fasts due to pregnancy or breast-feeding, you have to make up for the fasts, even if you choose to feed the poor/needy. If say you don't fast and for some reason you could not make up for the fasts during the whole year (breast-feeding or illness) and the next ramadhan comes, you still have to make up for the previous year AS WELL AS give Fidya (money to poor for the whole month for fasting). Praise be to Allaah. 'If a Muslim does not fast in Ramadaan for a shar’i reason, he has to make up that fast after the reason no longer applies. He must hasten to do this as soon as possible. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): “…but if any of you is ill or on a journey, the same number (should be made up) from other days…” ' [al-Baqarah 2:184]

Yeah thats what I heard that You HAVE to make up for the missing fasts even If you give money to charity, You cant get away with it ladies :D

Re: fasting when pregnant

OK, I was also confused about that. Thanks for clarifying!

fasting + pregnant = ?

Hello i was wondering if sum1 is pregnant are they allowed to fast or not....
or is it a personal issue?

PS: I am neither pregnant or planning on getting pregnant!!! lol im not even married just nosey!
:)

Re: fasting when pregnant

the baby will feed right off of you ....meaning whatever you do eat the baby will get. so dont worry about that. It's YOU that might end up malnourished.

It's a personal decision....there are some that fast while pregnant and come out of it doing perfectly fine and then there are others that just can't do it. They feel faint etc.

just as a side note: If you can't keep fast due to medical reasons (such as you being pregnant etc) you can donate money (the amount it would take to feed one person daily) for each day missed. however I am not sure if you still have to make up those fasts or not.
