Farhat’s exclusion from team is ‘unfair’, says Ilyas **
LAHORE: Former Pakistan Test cricketer Mohammad Ilyas said Monday that the selectors were ‘unfair’ while naming a national squad for a series against Sri Lanka. Illyas, who has played ten Tests, admitted that he did tell the selection committee members how unfair they were in their selection. “Yes, I even said to them that war is on,” he told Daily Times. Ilyas said he met the selectors during a camp at the Gaddafi Stadium and informed that Imran would not be able to attend the training camp because of his wife’s pregnancy. “Chief selector Salahuddin Ahmad and Shafqat Rana told me that it was ok. But surprisingly he was dropped from the squad despite his eye-catching performances in domestic season.” He said he was really upset on this ‘unfair exclusion of the talented young man. “Imran has dominated the domestic matches and proved his worth by scoring runs. But the selectors did not consider him.” He said Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Nasim Ashraf had announced that a young team would be selected for the upcoming tournaments but there were still old faces. “I have never given an interview in favour of Imran. In fact I have criticised him whenever he has played reckless shots. I gave opinion against him on different occasions because I was also a Test cricketer and it hurts to see a national hero playing poor cricket,” he maintained. Ilyas said there was a strong possibility that he would be banned from entering the Gaddafi Stadium. “I am not afraid of this. I will take the PCB officials to a court of law,” he concluded. http://www.dailytimes.com.pk/default.asp?page=2007\05\08\story_8-5-2007_pg2_3
LAHORE: Former Pakistan Test player Mohammad Ilyas has ‘threatened’ the selection committee members for not including opener Imran Farhat in a 16-member squad named for the Sri Lanka one-day international series, selector Shafqat Rana told Daily Times here Monday. Ilyas, father-in-law of Imran, entered the room of selectors and said: “thank you very much for not selecting Imran. Now the war is on.” Shafqat said it was very unfortunate that a former Test cricketer behaved in such a negative manner. “The selection committee has selected the side purely on merit considering the performance of the players. Imran was dropped because Mohammad Hafeez is technically strong and is a good fielder,” he added. To a question, he said the selectors knew that Hafeez could not perform in the World Cup but he had potential and this was the reason he had been given preference over Imran. Shafqat said he could not believe that Ilyas would use such negative words. “We are friends for more than three decades. I am still in a shock but one thing is clear that we will not take any pressure from any quarter as far as the selection is concerned,” he concluded.
I agree about Sami, but Akmal performed brilliantly in earlier half/mid of his last stunt with the team and faded later on, Hafeez earned recall after much longer and consistent performance in domestic so Imran Farhat’s case is pre-mature. Also, Farhat enjoyed a very long ride with the team not-too-long-ago with very minimal contributions.
Today the newspapers had stories that Selectors are considering disciplinary action against Imran after he confronted Chief selector and asked questions:
'why was I dropped?', 'what would I do now as my contract is terminated', 'what is wrong with my batting'?
Last one had me in fits :D
Sallu replied to him by saying that he should file a written complaint and work hard on domestic scene (maybe both at home and in grounds), then he can make a comeback.
awww… . he’ll still get some advert offer from Beeree or Tooth Paste Manufacturers…that’ll keep the fire lit under the pot InshAllah…
Seriously, all he needed to do was focus on Domestic cricket with his head down and blow his critics away by improving his technique and going to the Academy for coaching.
He could have made a come back. Not that he might not still do that but the odds are really against him now.
