Family Superstitions.

I saw a thread opened earlier on this topic but it was lacking the following kind of mirch masala.

My family had two very big superstitions which I have broken out of after moving to USA. But if my family elders find out my non conformation they will resist and will try to convince me.

First one:
No black shoes or black clothes ever , if you do not follow this rule either you or someone in the extended family will get in some big trouble. They had tons of family history to prove their point.
The only exception was black topi , but women could not wear black dupatta ever.
Second one:
Celebrating birthday is bad omen for the family , so no birthdays were celebrated and again they had tons of family history to prove it.

Others:

  1. Do not wear new clothes on Wednesday.
  2. Do not start your travel before Friday prayer.
  3. Do not pass under or sit under a tree after dark the churails or jins will possess you.
  4. When you kill a snake burn it otherwise it will have your picture in his eyes and his female will come and get you.
  5. The snake can assume shape of human after he is 100 years old.
  6. The churails have their feet backward that is how you can tell a churail.
  7. The churails , jins , bhoots do not have shadow so if you see a human without shadow he/she is one of those.

Do you have one to share ?

Re: Family Superstitions.

Some that my late grandma brought us up with:

Don't spray perfumes when going out at night
Don't go out after magreb without covering your hair
Don't go to the toilet with your hair loose
Don't talk in the toilet
Don't cut hair or nails after magreb (The one day mum cut our hair after magreb - it was after my grandma died and that night our car got broken into!)

Duting TOM don't dress in new clothes and do excess make up or wear perfume

Don't drink milk after eating fish/seafood in general

I still find myself doing/not doing some of these even now.........................

Re: Family Superstitions.

what is magreb ?

here are few not to my family but in general in my state

idiotic and meaning less things which most of it i follow

1) don't go out if you see a cat crossing you
intially i was following this but now due to large number of cat population stopped following it
2) don't go out if some one sneezes(cold sneezes allowed :) ) while you start,
i follow this, i stop sit and have some water and start again
3) don't go out if you see a widow passing by
i don't care about it
4) don't go out if you see a brahmin alone
i don't care about it
5) don't give money to anyone on tuesday and friday or on evenings
sometimes i follow when it is not compulsary to give money at that time

one of my friend don't talk to anyone during exams, and he wear the same dress, same pen and same bike, and same route for all exams
even if it is urgent he talks in sign language, i don't know why he follows this or he want to get to rid of my non sense talk, but he is my class topper

Re: Family Superstitions.

We have that don't wear black in our family too but its only for women and just clothes not shoes. I had to get some sort of special permission to be able to wear black trousers for school.

My Dadi Ama is quite superstitious and was always telling me off when I was younger that I shouldn't tie jumpers round my waist and also never wear new clothes or cut hair/nails on Tuesday. Also never leave your shoes upside down. I don't really understand the reasons behind these ones tho.

Re: Family Superstitions.

r u muslim or hindu, in india all barber shops are closed on tuesday's even in bangladesh too

Re: Family Superstitions.

In my family . We don’t do engagement , it doesn’t work out … recently I have proven it again by breaking one :cb:

We had few… same as mentioned by couple of posters .. but our younger generation don’t follow them … At all

And To be very honest its just superstition and held no ground
