facebook is haram is a very fleeting statement.needless to say not accurate. how you use it depends on you. it offers quite excellent privacy settings, if you donot want other than your contacts to see your face they cant. and who you keep as your contact is upto you. even in contacts you can select people whom you dont wish to view your personal material.however people get into silly competitions and narcist urge of having more and more contacts and connections. upto the individual i guess.

Well, I like it too now that I'm used to it.
Ok so yesterday at my daughter's Islamic school I was talking to another parent about how I found some really old friends of mine via Facebook. So she goes on to tell me that the concept of Facebook is haraam as we allow na-mehrams to see our pictures and then she asked me to get off of it as I was committing a gunaah e kabira.
Well I can't say that I don't have any men on my account because I do, but somehow I thought that view was a bit ummmm, what should I say, a bit much, although if you sit down to argue, we could probably conclude that it is not particularly Islamic...
So I was stumped a bit, didn't say much except smile and change the topic.
But I did think I should start a thread here and get your point of views. So let's start...

facebook is haram because you can put your pictures there
similarly cameras are haram because you can take your pictures and give them to someone
same goes for video cameras
pen/pencil is haram because you can doodle your image or caricature even and give it to a na mehram.

i nvr liked facebook to begin with…deactivated it within a months time. Im a pvt person for the most part. FB just isnt for ppl like me. Too many stalkers around 2

AE But I have these very strict privacy settings. And very few people like close cousins and friends on there. Not friends of friends type of thing. Hubby has a hugeeeeeeeeee listing, but that’s hubby. He can handle it.

If i want to get in touch with family and friends I would do it via email or phone. I guess im old fashioned. 
I just dont understand what people like about it. I guess its good for those social folks out there. I prefer socializing in person but I just cant seem to do it online.

i was a very anti facebook person, but what I like about it is that you can keep tabs on the going ons in the life of those close to you, and vice versa..its frequent interaction or awareness about small things, and that is how real life is.
my issue with email and phone calls is that it is less frequent, takes more effort, and is more detailed so each call is exchange of a large batch of information. its more like a deeper discussion.
facebook, i can tel ppl what I am upto over teh weekend, my view on a movie, some interesting event, and all the ppl see it, I see what they are upto it just keeps you better connected.
my family and friends are spread all over, and I honestly feel that I am better connected to them using facebook than I was before.

… i’ve travelled extensively throughout my life so have met a lot of people around the world, so i saw facebook as a good way to stay in touch with all of them… but all 900+!!! It gets too much so i de-activated my FB account a while back… i’ll stick to email or f2f interaction thanks 
Anyway, that’s the reason i give to everyone as to why i de-activated it, but now i have a new reason to use thanks to you Nik.. i wonder what kind of reaction i will get…
