A Facebook campaign has been launched urging Saudi men to whip women who drive with their cord from their headdress.

The online page urges men to attack women in response to a burgeoning protest movement against the law banning them from driving in the ultra-conservative nation. They were angered after Saudi woman Manal al-Sharif was jailed for defying the ban and are claiming they need to drive to ensure their own safety if their chaperone was to fall ill.

The page, titled ‘The Iqal Campaign: June 17 for preventing women from driving,’ refers to the Arabic name for the cord used to hold on the traditional headdress worn by many men in the Gulf, advocating the cord be used to hit women who dare to drive.

It has drawn over 6,000 ‘likes’ on the popular social networking website. Some on the page proposed distributing boxes of Iqals to youths and encouraging them use them to hit women who participate in the June 17 protest.

One joked about the price of Iqals going up due to men buying them before the protest. The issue has sparked debate in the Saudi press.

The renowned novelist Abdo Khal, writing in Okaz, deplored the ban on women driving, and said he did not know ‘whether to laugh or cry’ over the proposed Iqal campaign.

Ahmed Sayed Atif, writing in Al-Watan, called for women be allowed to drive, and that they not arrested for not possessing a driver’s licence, as can happen now.

Meanwhile, a Facebook page titled ‘We are all Manal al-Sharif: a call for solidarity with Saudi women’s rights,’ has been growing in popularity, with its number of ‘likes’ rising by about 5,000 to more than 19,000 in a day.

‘It is not a revolution, it is not a plot, it is not a gathering and it is not a protest - we are only requesting to drive our cars,’ one post on the page said.

And a petition launched by Gulf intellectuals calling for the release of Sharif has garnered over 300 signatures.

According to Al-Watan, a 37-year-old Saudi woman who had repeated Sharif’s experiment in driving in the town of Al-Ras, northeast of Riyadh, was arrested at a supermarket by a police patrol accompanied by members of the religious police.

She was driving with her mother and aunt at the time, according to the newspaper, which said she was released a few hours later.

Re: Facebook campaign launched threatening to WHIP Saudi female drivers

Oh goody..now they are showing the rest of the world how their brains work....

Re: Facebook campaign launched threatening to WHIP Saudi female drivers

My point is good for those women for having the guts to drive even in the face of those threats..

I wouldn't go as far as evil but some of those Saudi wahhabis do seem to have a screw loose..

Re: Facebook campaign launched threatening to WHIP Saudi female drivers

Like facebook campaign is going to do anything...

Re: Facebook campaign launched threatening to WHIP Saudi female drivers

^^ Yesit will... few more threads here

Re: Facebook campaign launched threatening to WHIP Saudi female drivers

I always thought the ban was a bit stupid, no logic in it whatsoever. The Saudi govt. will have to give in eventually.

Re: Facebook campaign launched threatening to WHIP Saudi female drivers

The ban is not stupid. Women should stay indoor and help raise the kids. They should not engage in men's tasks. That's Islamic. What's next if this is allowed? Men working in factories or become truck drivers?

Re: Facebook campaign launched threatening to WHIP Saudi female drivers

Allah humma salle ala Ibn Saud wa aal-e-Saud!

Re: Facebook campaign launched threatening to WHIP Saudi female drivers

Some of those Saudis and their thinking really scare me. It’s why I’ve stopped visiting the Arab News website. The reader comments section is full of loonies.

Men are not allowed to work in factories or become truck drivers?

Re: Facebook campaign launched threatening to WHIP Saudi female drivers

Those men behind the facebook campaign are truly pigs.

Oh shut up.

Re: Facebook campaign launched threatening to WHIP Saudi female drivers

:

what about Anti-Prophet groups on Facebook?? would u be willing to classify all Brits, americans etc etc as racist too???

Re: Facebook campaign launched threatening to WHIP Saudi female drivers

All i'm going to say is what a bunch of paindos! It's about time people developed some tolerance

Re: Facebook campaign launched threatening to WHIP Saudi female drivers

Nomi, I said some of them are loonies. Hopefully a minority but they have a significant presence on the Arab News website. It's depressing to read the comments section. I never said all Saudis are crazy.

What does this have to do with Anti-Prophet groups? Some Brits and Americans are hateful bigots.

Re: Facebook campaign launched threatening to WHIP Saudi female drivers

Just about judging people based on Facebook activity......thats y i said that..

Re: Facebook campaign launched threatening to WHIP Saudi female drivers

start a campaign to promote women driving in KSA.

jaisay ko taisa

Re: Facebook campaign launched threatening to WHIP Saudi female drivers

So how come women were allowed to ride camels solo in the Prophet's (PBUH) time???

Obviously the law is to do with culture rather than Islam.. (and how ridiculous is it that one of the stated reasons is that it's meant to stop 'freemixing' yet being alone with a non-mehram driver is somehow ok lol)

And a woman stepping outdoors or having a job isn't generally considered haram.. unless your're the taliban or something..

Re: Facebook campaign launched threatening to WHIP Saudi female drivers

^ditto Deeba!.

And people who support such ban against women driving or any of their activities should be whipped themselves. I grew up in Saudia at my early age and found it very disturbing the fact that my mom couldn't drive me to hospital when i nearly died at home. L'anat to ppl who support such ban!

Re: Facebook campaign launched threatening to WHIP Saudi female drivers

Umm Arab News is an excellent newspaper by the way, you shouldn't judge it by the readers' comments. You should check out the comments on websites like the Express Tribune where readers will celebrate Salman Taseer's death and defend killers like Mumtaz Qadri.

Re: Facebook campaign launched threatening to WHIP Saudi female drivers

And rizla buddy, that is why we are so behind. I feel sorry for ppl who celebrate someone's death let alone someone who was trying to defend Mumtaz Qadri.
