Oooh - this is a question that needs illustrations!! But since I can't right now....
Depending on how you put the eyeliner/shadow/kajal on, you can create very different looks.
From a 60's look with a liquid eyeliner, to a natural day look with a deep brown pencil.... The smokey eyes to the bollywood "china doll with too much makeup" look. Lol.
I'll post pics for examples when I hit my 25.....
