is one external harddrive better than the other one? i’ve been reading reviews online and i keep getting mixed reviews for like 5 or 6 different companies. can’t decide which one is more reliable than the other one. help! got any recommendations?
Re: external harddrives
Mediagate, duno if its available at your end.
Not only does it store stuff you can plug it into the tv and watch movies off it straight, dont need any software.

More the less they all the same, Just look for plain old HD with good price...
i haven’t seen mediagate in any of the stores here :S i do see seagate there. the same thing different brand?
so mybook good then? there was a 1 TB on sale like a week ago…i missed it
it was so cheap!
what about it stops working because it heats up, or you can’t access anything on it anymore, or you can lose your work because of i dunno bad manufacturing or stuff? (i’ve read reviews…) i mean yeah stuff inside is the same, but what about which company makes it better, so it doesn’t stop working after 2 tries.
Re: external harddrives
Seagate and Maxtor are good brands . I just bought 500 GB Maxtor one touch external for 89 dollars ..
Make sure that it has Fire Wire interface also along with USB2.0 as Firewire is much faster and good once you have lots of data on your hard disk ..
also I am not sure if all comes with external power feature but that is the one you should look for (one with their woen power adapter that you plug into your power outlet)
Re: external harddrives
oo thank you! i did see some good reviews of maxtor and seagate on cnet. a little bit pricier, but i guess the money's worth it.
Re: external harddrives
if they are over priced for you . .you can always consider buying an internal hard drive and a separate external hard drive enclosure (for 30-35 dollars) and make you own USB2.0/FireWire External hard drive
Re: external harddrives
hmm...i just did a quick price check, and if i buy things separately, the cost comes out to be the same if i buy the whole thing pre-assembled. =/ atleast for 500 GB ones.
anyone know if simpletech is reliable?
Re: external harddrives
In general these hard drives are of two kind.
1- No power needed.
2- Power needed.
Mybook (WD) is good product.
But it needs external power and has shiny slippery surface.
Always keep drive on flat surface and keep them still....don't let them fall or slip off the desk. Their 'head' can be broken if a jerk is transmitted when they are on.
It goes to sleep mode when not used for a while so no problem using for long.
But one must unplug power for safety when not in use. They have good instructional manual.
No experience with simpletech.
Re: external harddrives
The only problem with power neede externbal drive is that if you computer interbal power supply does not have enough juice left (low watt power supply or too many peripherals attached to computer already) it may not even register your hard drive ..
other than that .. one without its own power supply is more portable in nature, off course
Re: external harddrives
interesting.
also, this might be a silly question, but are 500 GB drives more reliable in the long run than 1 TB? (i mean if i buy them right now)
Re: external harddrives
It's just a matter of storage space, i think.
I have a 350GB Maxtor External and a 250GB Western Digital Internal. Both work great.
Folks have different preferences, my fav 3 are: WD, Seagate, Maxtor
Re: external harddrives
Yes. Just a storage difference. Don't know if larger capacity has any problem compared to smaller one.
Without power drives can be used during travel or with a laptop as one can expect.
Re: external harddrives
lol i know it's the storage difference, but i mean is it more likely that a 1 TB will have more problems later on than 500 GB? like i dunno crashing or whatver ? :S

Im partial to Western Digital hard drives (internal or external). A proven brand that has not let me down in the past 10 or so years that ive used them. Not a single crash or failure
Re: external harddrives
It's unlikely, Khumar. Usually it's a brand thing. Some are quality products, others are not. Just check the specs of the hdd, like transfer speed etc...and if you get a decent deal, take it.

ooo that's a good recommendation. i'll keep that in mind.

err i see for one transfer speed 480, with 7200 rpm...is that good? like what would be decent specs?
(total noob)
