External hard drive help

It’s brokened :frowning:

I went to plug it in and the usb port thingy on it sort of pushed itself inwards and then wiggled about.

Has this effected the motherboard thing that stores all of my files?

I can’t lose all my files, they are all work related and il just die. Well I wont, but I will cry…a lot.

I’ve provided a visual for clarification purposes.

I don’t have the receipt or a guarantee as my uncle bought it for me from KSA.

Will normal computer shop people be able to fix it?

Where in London can I take it to get fixed?

Re: External hard drive help

Currys will charge £700 to get the data off the hard drive if it is damaged.

Re: External hard drive help

Don’t take it to Curry’s or PCW or whatever! That’s just extortion.

Take it to any of your tech savvy buddies. They should be able to help you out. I don’t imagine it is a difficult fix, open up, look at the damage on the connectors inside or whatever and try and connect the cable or replace the messed up soldered joints if any.

Re: External hard drive help

I know a girl who went to currys as she purchased her laptop from them and they wanted £700. I was like wtf. That is extortion. Hahah.

Re: External hard drive help

I am defo not taking it to PC world, they gave my laptop a worm. I dont have any tech savvy buddies. Im edit.

Re: External hard drive help

Buy another hard drive caddy (external hard drive case) and move your hard drive to it. They are dime a dozen on ebay.

Re: External hard drive help

I have no idea what you mean Mirch and to be honest I am not a tech savvy person. I barely knew that this was called an external hard drive, I just told my uncle I needed something that could save a lot of files and he bought me an external hard drive.

Re: External hard drive help

Let me know if it needs to be plugged into power source / electrical outlet ?

Re: External hard drive help

I guess you’ll be crying a lot then…

Re: External hard drive help

It’s ok, ive just remember we have tech people who come to school every Friday, it’s not really a work related issue, but it is just as important. I will cry and Robert shall fix it, if he doesn’t, Mirch you’re on stand by.

Thanks.

Re: External hard drive help

Ask him to put your hard drive into another case , once he does that you should be good to go. It will not be a big deal . Those cases are .99 cents a case on ebay.

Re: External hard drive help

You were right Mirch, it was the case, it had over heated and it was all black inside, but Robert said the memory is still intact. He showed me which ide/sata converter kit to get from Amazon…it was £11, I should get it on the 13th.

Re: External hard drive help

Is it ide or sata ?
The lowest price on eBay uk is 2.55 pounds. check yourself:

Re: External hard drive help

This is what he told me I needed. Its not the case. Im not to worried about replacing the case as of yet, its the cable I need.

Re: External hard drive help

I am wondering how this cable is going to help you! Your USB port is already broken. This cable is not going to fit into it.

Did he tell you how should you connect your drive with your computer using this cable?

Re: External hard drive help

I don’t think the computer’s USB is broken. it was the USB port on the hard-drive enclosure that’s at fault.
Milly you should’ve gone for a boxed enclosure so moving drive around would’ve been a lot easier. Some thing like this would be better (for a full size, 3.5", PC drive):

Re: External hard drive help

No my laptop USB is not broken, it’s just the one on the hard drive that was broken.

Im going to get a new hard drive away Toffee so I dont need a case.

Which hard drive shall I get, it’s nto really for the memory, I dont really need a huge memory, im just very very very good at losing usb sticks.

Re: External hard drive help

If you save data on USB flash drive you never have to worry about it getting broken. I keep one on my key chain. only if I lose keys then I will lose it, but then I will have a backup of same thing on hard drive , it is slim chance I would lose USB flash drive with my car and house keys and crash hard drive on the same day.

Re: External hard drive help

that is what I meant that when your external harddrive usb port is broken, how will you connect your new cable with that

Re: External hard drive help

It arrived and I fixed it all by mesel! I so proud of me! Only took me 10 mins to figure out how to connect all the bits together…there were NO instructions either. Pat on the back for me!!!

Transfered all ‘important’ files to new USB stick.
