you haven’t even tried yet :hinna:
Re: Explanation of the Pakistani caste system..
You know I've never come across this Pakistani caste system which makes me wonder if it truly is a Punjabi thing....I've seen countless marriages being arranged in my family and not once have I heard any of the elders talk about caste/surnames.
Re: Explanation of the Pakistani caste system..
The caste system is irrelevant in the 21st century. Unfortunately some would rather keep the caste system (namely the so called higher castes cuz it favours them socially). To answers OP's question - Im rajput and thats the only caste i really know anything about. I think it goes something like they were warriors (mostly princes) that were recruited by the british to fight against enemys. But dont quote me on that.

Yes, I think the whole caste system is a very Punjabi concept. I haven't heard non-Punjabi's every discussing it.
Re: Explanation of the Pakistani caste system..
^ditto
And yes there are people who will still only marry into their caste and no other...........and that too in the US.........
Re: Explanation of the Pakistani caste system..
Islamically there is no caste system but unfortunately it is followed even today...
My Dad is a Syed and mom is Pathani and obviously u follow the fathers side, which makes me a Syed...
as stated above by someone Syed girls are supposedly not allowed to marry non-syed's as the children would not be syed, it would also be badluck for the couple and marriage so i've heard, although there are exceptions where syed girls can get married to non-syed's. I don't know what to make of this and it does confuse me at times... :\
Re: Explanation of the Pakistani caste system..
lol. ive actually never really understood punjabi people in that sense. I had a few in my class and generally they where much more backwards in there way of thinking
Re: Explanation of the Pakistani caste system..
Caste system is not an Islamic concept and I believe the reason only Punjabi s have caste system comes from the Sikh Punjabi s. Its definitely a cultural aspect. There are a lot of people who still follow it but I know many people who are moving away from it.
Re: Explanation of the Pakistani caste system..
Peace
BTW ... Choudhry and Mian are not castes ... they are titles ... all Choudhrys and Mians belong to a few castes, but not all members of those castes are Choudhrys or Mians.
For example a long time ago in a given area of Arains they had a community and the leader would be called the Choudhry saab and his children would be called Choudhry Arain, the others would be Arain and hence a class system developed from within the zaat itself ... then later a Choudhry of one clan would only get married to a Choudhry of another to keep "blue blood" and so on ...
A clan is a name of a family - any trade or title name is not a true caste but really should be called a class ...
Re: Explanation of the Pakistani caste system..
Personally I don't see anything wrong in recognising ones personal legacy, but to use that to prevent or promote marriages or restrict them is wrong ...

Muslims Punjabi's existed before Sikhism came to be.
Re: Explanation of the Pakistani caste system..
^Well I don't know where it came from but my point was its influenced by culture and not religion. Caste system exists in Hinduism and in Sikhs so don't know who influenced who.

**there is NO caste system in Sikhism...Hinduism YES and that's where we got it from...we were all Hindus before the advent of Islam in the sub-continent but when our ancestors embraced Islam, they kept those traditions in different forms.
i know Rajasthani families in India who still, after hundreds of years, keep statues in the dark corners of the house...i've seen it with my own eyes...i asked them, in order to satisfy my curiosity, as to why they keep those statues, they told me that it's because of their respect for their ancestors who kept those for generations.
this shows that they still have some soft corners in their hearts for their traditions, even if it clashes head-on with their Islamic beliefs.**
Re: Explanation of the Pakistani caste system..
Really? I totally thought Sikhs have castes as well. I've heard of Jatt Sikhs no?

u mean "maula Jutt"? lol...i think a JUTT can be a Hindu as well so JUTT is NOT a caste of Sikhism...i dunno the details but yeah there is no caste system in sikhism...i've NOT ever come across an **"achhoot sikh"**** lol.**
**
Sikhism is a culmination of Hinduism and Islam...they believe in ONENESS of God [Islam] and RE-INCARNATION, KARMA [Hinduism]. they have 5 pillars of Sikhism the likes of what we have in Islam. they wear 5 K's...[Kangan, Kachhhaa [underwear], carry Kirpaan (sword), grow Kesh (hair) and place Kanghii (comb) in their jooRaas]
one interesting myth/fact...i grew up in India until age 20 but i've never seen a Sikh's funeral...my elders used to tell us that they take their dead for their final journey at MIDNIGHT...lol!**
Re: Explanation of the Pakistani caste system..
Nahi, I mean Jatt as in the caste Muslim Punjabis have. Yes, I know I have heard of the castes in Hinduism. I guess I was mistaken and thinking there is caste system among Sikhs as well.

*there is NO caste system in Sikhism *
Hmmm interesting, maybe not a caste system but something else? I know of a Sikh girl who liked a guy but didn't pursue it because he was from a different 'caste' or something and her parents would never approve

Yep, I know all of that about Sikhism I took a course on World Religions once upon a time lol

See, I totally thought so too. It's not religious like it is in Hinduism hence I keep saying among Sikhs and not in Sikhism - but I could be wrong.
