Expensive Clothes and Kids..

I’ve been around so many babies/kids to see that many parents invest a lot of money in designer wear for their young ones. Isn’t that really a waste? I mean how long can a 6 month old fit into a pair of nikes? After their feet grow, you’re kind of out of luck. You have to go and buy a new pair.

I remember walking into a Baby Gap with one of my friends and I was just amazed at the pricing…hmm not amazed but SHOCKED! A baby sleeper was around $30!!! There was also a jacket…leather perhaps and it cost around $70 <–and that was on sale too!

Instead of wasting the money on expensive outfits that the kids will grow out of…why not save the money for them???

Well in that case I'm afraid I'm guilty of this very crime myself. Deep down I know its a bit of a waste because yes Harris is growing fast and so won't get a lot of wear out of the clothes we buy him.

But on the other hand, he is our only child and we both work full time so its nice to buy him nice things.

what some ppl do is to get the kids stuff rom outlet stores, so they get the quality as well as the brand that they like. The selection can be limited but whether its quality they are after or just the brand image..both are available much cheaper.

this couple I know dreses their kid in polo stuff all the time, but due to the selection dilemma at outlets, the poor kid is always in mustards, browns, dull oranges and those sorts of colours.

whats the point of making money if u cant spend it on ur loved ones......theres time enuff to save for their future..but parents often want to do something for them rite now in the present, especially if its the first born

on a personal note, my neice is only 5 months old but my whole family spoils her, my sister most of all..n yes we have brought things from Baby Gap :D

Personally, I find it to be a waste...once the kid grows up what are you going to do with all of those clothes? Its one thing if you receive gifts from ppl, but going out yourself and buying high ticket items, in my opinion...is NUTS :)

I know this one lady who bought a pair of Clarks for here 2 or 3 yr old kid.The kid is 5 now and he still wears the same shoes constantly complainig to his mom that they are too tight. :hehe:
Guess some ppl wanna save and get the brand at the same time

Why is it a waste? In that case why not just dispense with buying children clothes altogether untill they stop growing? Lots of things these days could be considered unnecessary or too expensive but it doesn't stop people from buying them.

well if its the first one then obviously evrything is for that baby.. an parents go outta their way to fulfill their lil wishes an dreams an love by buyin all of that..

No one's saying to let your kid go naked...you can still buy clothes that are reasonably priced and that look good....you don't have to go spending the big bucks at ROOTS or Gap for kids clothes..... like spending $40 on a pair of Baby Gap overalls is not sensible when in 40 days it won't fit the kid.

Yea...lots of stuff are unnecessary/ too expensive..that's why if you want to save money...just get what you need. For example..we don't have a DVD player...why buy one when our VCR works fine....

wrong example..

but I do agree.. even if you're a fashion maven, it makes little sense (pun intended) to dress up kids in clothes with other people's names on it.. the poor kid is already too confused remembering his own..

Yes but what if the parents want to spend the money on those clothes? As long as they aren't getting themselves into debt over it then what does it matter to anyone else?

.

i'm sure Hinna was talking about people who could use the money for something else but insist on dressing up their babies in expensive name brands just for the sake of it..

I mean wouldn't you want to save those extra hard earned dollars for your kid's college/university? How do you know that you will be able to afford it? Will you have a job then??

Yes…but if u have a pretty secure job n a good income…you can save while still giving ur child some expensive clothes…like i said..its just the feeling of wanting to do something for them in the present IN ADDITION to the future…i dunno, thats just the way i feel…

while i dont feel its necessary for the kid to have all name brands…it makes you feel good to be able to provide them with something that u prolly didnt have as a kid…hope it makes sense :flower1:

Well larki_punjaban just said what I was going to, the girl has a good head on her shoulders.

I think it sets the kids up to always expect designer wear...and possess the attitude that make theml make fun of others who can't afford or who choose not to wear designer wear. I mean...if you give it to them now...they're ALWAYS going to expect it....so then will you be able to afford it for 3, 4, 5 kids down the line?

So does that mean by dressing your child in cheap clothes you are setting them up to be stingy with their money later on in life? Course not.

thanx shahreen, i usually get a lot of heat for my opinions, its nice to see someone agree with me

well, its also up to u to teach ur kids about being respectful of others regardless of their financial position…if they do ALWAYS expect the best clothes, u need to teach them to work hard so that they can grow up to become successful and keep up with or improve on the quality they are used to. And 3, 4, 5 kids down the road, u should have a lot of those expensive clothes you bought for the older kids ready for them..it doesn’t mean that they should just live for the hand-me-downs but when added to the other clothes, it helps..

Of course this does depend on ur financial situation as well…i dont think its more important to have good clothes versus a house but if ur already set…then indulge the kids…they’ll appreciate it when they get older…well now i’m just rambling…neways i hope i got some of my points across

EXACTLY!!
