Re: Ex Caretaker Minister Salmaan Taseer named as new Punjab Governor
I believe with the appointment of the new governor, PPP is trying to undermine PML N in Punjab and trying to strengthen its position. While Zardari talks of friendship with NS openly, he is at the same time trying to undermine him secretly.
How would an appointment of a PPP governor undermine Nawaz Sharif.
Right now Nawaz Sharif is just playing...Chit ve meri tey patt ve mera.
Re: Ex Caretaker Minister Salmaan Taseer named as new Punjab Governor
This is actually very sad and another dark day in N-League’s politics. I hope they would talk to Zardari and PPP before taking any action. I am sure PPP an PML-N would keep themselves on track and work for the good of Pakistan.
Mahaaz arai ki siyasat kaa kuch hasil nahin hai…Pakistan is facing a lot of other issues right now with the likes of Mahangai, Load shading, Beyrozgari etc.

As he takes oath of his office at 6 pm today, Salman is being viewed more as Musharraf’s man rather than a representative of federal government led by the PPP

***A big business and media tycoon, Salman Taseer has personal rivalry with Sharif brothers. PML-N reservations baseless: Shujaat
LAHORE: Rejecting the PML-N’s reservations on Salmaan Taseer’s appointment as the Punjab governor, PML-Q President Shujaat Hussain said appointing a governor was the president’s discretion and provinces were not consulted on the federal issue. Talking to Geo News on Thursday, Shujaat said Taseer belonged to a noble and educated family and would serve the province honestly.

So who owns First Capital, PACE, WorldCall and Business Plus?
Daily Times Editor Najam Sethi was thrown into prison by Nawaz Sharif for some articles he wrote about 10 years ago. Nawaz wanted Sethi tried by a military tribunal, but the then General Pervez Musharraf saved Sethi and told Nawaz to go take a hike. That is why Najam Sethi and Salman Taseer etc are indebted to President Musharraf.
But I think Sethi was not working with Taseer back then, was he? Wasn't he the editor of Friday Times?

Salman Taseer arrived in Islamabad on Thursday by a special flight and called on President Pervez Musharraf at the President’s camp office in Rawalpindi.
President Musharraf on this occasion congratulated Salman Taseer for his appointment as governor and expredded his kind wishes for him.

its all owned by salman taseers, sethi is just his employee who is editor of daily times and aaj tak
and ye daily times and ajj tak were not even launched back then as mian saab had struggled the media and they opened up only after musharraf gave freedom to the media.
friday times is owned by sehti and taseer has nothing to do with it, it was the newspaper that got closed down by ganja and sethi thrown in prison.
Re: Ex Caretaker Minister Salmaan Taseer named as new Punjab Governor
I think that appointment of Salman Taseer as Governor of Punjab is a very strong message and shrewd move by President Musharraf. What President did is gave a signal to PML-N to behave or they would be made to behave. Making Salman Taseer Governor of Punjab would be actually embarrassment for many in PPP as PPP wanted to kick Nawaz in his butt slowly but it seems Musharraf do not believe on slow kicking and thus he has sent danda to hit Nawaz in Punjab and regardless of PPP like it or not, this danda would be seen as PPP part of the game.
Taseer speech after becoming Governor and his trying to show himself as PPP stalwart must be more embarrassing for PPP, as on one hand PPP is trying their best to show PML-N that they want to stay in coalition but appointment of Governor who has personal bad relation with Nawaz and is anti-Nawaz in every way with perception that PPP could be behind this appointment would certainly going to blow hot-cold air to this coalition.
This move by Musharraf could not have come at a time more appropriate, when PPP and PML-N coalition is already in middle of turmoil. At this stage appointing a governor for Punjab who has personal bad relation with Nawaz and Co, with perception that he is pro-PPP, is certainly a master stroke of politics. Salman Taseer pro-PPP jingoism after becoming Governor, showing that he is a PPP Jiala sitting as governor of Punjab, declaring Lahore as city of Bhutto and another future Larkana, vowing to make Bilawal contest and win election from Lahore in future, is classic political move, that would certainly going to rub sh*t on the face of Nawaz.
Maybe this appointment is first step towards kicking PML-N from Punjab government and replacing it with PPP+PML government, something I believe was already on the card from the first day, decided even before election, something that President Musharraf desired even after 2002 election.
Re: Ex Caretaker Minister Salmaan Taseer named as new Punjab Governor
This current CRISIS ("Oh my God, what is gonna happen?") makes you wonder when will the poor Pakistani ever get any political leadership who actually think about development of the country and good of the common man.
In the three months, since February 18 when elections were held, not a single tangible and meaningful step is taken to better the lives of common people in Pakistan. It seems the country is beseiged by one crisis after another, starting with the so-called judicial crisis, then this bad-boy Punjab Governor, with a continuing musical chairs of who is joining the coalition and who is leaving the coalition, will they join the cabinet, should their resignations be accepted, who has the bigger ego, who can pee farther...
I hope at some point, our awaam (yeah, the same poor buggers who vote for these crapshots) come out on the streets and say "what utter nonsense!!!"

Actualluy these poor buggers are controlled and indebted to these crapshots....they wouldn't even inhale without a signal from their masters.
Re: Ex Caretaker Minister Salmaan Taseer named as new Punjab Governor
While the PML N boycotted, former PML Q ministers attended, which will set more tongues wagging about wild Presidential conspiracies and such.
Well, conspiracy is obvious. The way Zardari is playing slow poker against every odds, one cannot imagine that Zardari would have liked Taseer to become Governor of Punjab and I am sure PML-N knows that very well. Actually, Zardari is playing his cards (acting or genuine) as if he wants coalition between PML-N and PPP to stay in Federal as well as in Punjab government. To keep that impression alive, Zardari is keeping all ministries vacated by PML-N vacant, waiting for PML-N to join back. But, if there is slight hint of Zardari hand in this appointment of Taseer as Governor, than PML-N would know that Zardari wants PML-N out of not only Fedearal cabinet but also from government of Punjab. Something, I do not think Zardari would like it or would do at this time, as it makes no sense.
Situation seems more gruesome for coalition as Salman Tasseer started Pro-PPP jingoistic behaviour once became Governor. One can see marked difference between PPP politicians with Zardari trying to accommodate PML-N in every way and Salman Taseer acting as if he is going to cruch PML-N (Lahore would be Larkana, people of Punjab belongs to Bhutto and would never let PPP down, Bilawal would contest and win election from Lahore, etc) . All this shows that hand behind Salman Taseer is not of Zardari, as if Salman Taseer was working on instruction of Zardari, he would not have showed such jingoism, as such jingoism is certainly going to irritate and alienate PML-N workers, team, and leadership against PPP (something Zardari would never like to see, at least until Judges issue is sorted out).
Re: Ex Caretaker Minister Salmaan Taseer named as new Punjab Governor
Battleground Punjab
Saturday, May 17, 2008
PPP co-chairperson, Asif Ali Zardari, continues to maintain that he is not willing to part ways with the PML-N, that he is eager to persuade Mian Nawaz Sharif to withdraw the resignations of his ministers and that his party has decided the federal cabinet slots vacated by the PML-N’s outgoing ministers will not be filled. But these words do not seem to be matched by deeds. The latest decision, by the federal government and President Pervez Musharraf, to appoint Salman Taseer as the new Punjab governor, has, predictably, created much angst and anger within the PML-N. The party, which is in government in Punjab, maintains it was not consulted regarding the choice, and that Mr Taseer, regarded by them as a staunch presidential ally, is unacceptable as governor. Mr Taseer’s association with the PPP has also led to the suspicion that Governor House may become a centre of intrigue against the Punjab setup, which will be led in the days ahead by the powerful Shahbaz Sharif. Shahbaz Sharif’s nomination papers for a by-election have been accepted and he is widely expected to sweep to victory in Lahore and eventually take over as chief minister.
While Mr Zardari has said there will be no attempt to unseat the PML-N government in Punjab, a report that has appeared in this publication states that the PPP co-chairperson intends to spend time in the Governor’s House, keeping track of the provincial situation. It has also been argued that Mr Zardari, who was arrested from the Governor’s House in Lahore at the end of 1996, as the second Benazir Bhutto government was overthrown, is eager to make a triumphant re-entry to the grand halls and offices from which he was led away by army officers eleven years ago. If true, this is all rather childish. The latest developments have only acted to strengthen PML-N convictions that the PPP is working with the presidency. Rumours of a plan to restore all deposed judges except for Chief Justice Iftikhhar Mohammad Chaudhry, under a formula drawn up at the presidency, add to these suspicions. Such a move would obviously be unacceptable to either the PML-N or the lawyers, and would almost certainly drive home the decisive wedge between the PPP and the PML-N, splitting the coalition government perhaps for good. The task of running a coalition setup, as Mr Zardari has discovered, is not easy. Indeed, problems arise at every point. The current perceptions of a lack of sincerity and of intrigue are immensely damaging. Ideally, the man chosen as governor of a province should be one who is seen as someone who stands above politics and is acceptable to all major parties. This has not happened in Punjab and the consequences will become clear only over the days ahead. As citizens, we must only hope the coalition is able to remain in tact and put an end to the sense of crisis and conspiracy which at present seems to be a constant feature of the national political scene. This is holding up work on the many issues that need to be urgently addressed and is as such acting only to aggravate the existing sense of insecurity. Political parties must play a role to end, as swiftly as possible, this negative environment which is already resulting in a loss of public confidence in their ability to manage affairs, and proving, so unfortunately true, the predictions of critics who warned the two parties would never be able to co-exist.
