** Can anyone tell me the ethnicity of these folks from the list, especially of kiani. Just curious to know**.
Ethnically I believe they are all Pakistanis.
True Sa1eem.
But like LunaticCalm I'd be interested to know too, given the ethnicity dynamics at play, it would also shed light into who is more probable under present scenario, and who might end up working with sympathies for what in the future...
Anyone having solid clues abt backgrounds, do pls share.
who gets chosen will be a pretty strong signal of where teh country will be headed, while choosing an ISI person as a head may make some people nervous after all the beating ISI has taken in the press, but at the same time it may send a signal of a new era as well. Also based on the situation pak is in right now with internal and external threats, Kiani may be the best man for the job.
so thats logic,
how do i know the rest, well, spiritual powers. :)
:D
Youre right, this selection will surely define the near future, and Kiyani's only negative points seem his being an ISI guy and his political role recently which could have made him unpredictable, plus ISI DG has never been elevated to V/Chief or Chief before and that's also one thing against the tradition, but of course no rule. But meanwhile his being in ISI also makes him the strongest choice for Mush as he's got to be the most trusted man militarily as well as politically, which others like Satti or Majeed may not enjoy...let's see, but hope the selection is right in the long run...

Ethnicty has never really mattered in the Pak Army. We have had Pashtun, Punjabi and Mohajir Chiefs of Army Staff, but all have earned the same respect and loyalty from those they command.

not sure about him, but if musharaf will give seat to any one he will only give to someone who will be muhajir

i'm not questioning their loyalty, its just that i dont want a varus replacing a caesar here, with democrats (hilary) at the helm.
without considering loyalties/TC/seniority and Mushy's personal opinions/biases, my guess would be CGS Lt. Gen Muhammad Salahuddin Satti
Yup, Ive always had that feeling too. Esp ever since he was brought to GHQ as CGS from X Corps as Corp Commander and the then CGS Lt Gen Tariq Majeed was sent to X Corps HQ as Commander X Corps last year.
But there could be shock and surprises too if the other factors dominate the decisions in the end.

President General Pervez Musharraf visited the General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi on Wednesday and spent the day consulting his senior military commanders on sensitive subjects related to professional engagements.
The president spent the day at the GHQ after announcing on Tuesday to quit the military office on being re-elected as the president for another term. Meanwhile, the Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) has been changed while corps commanders Karachi and Lahore are being replaced beside the appointment of two four-star generals within a fortnight to fill the posts of the Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC) and the Vice Chief of the Army Staff (VCOAS). Some other important promotions and transfers are also expected during this period.
Highly-placed sources said that the **president had initiated consultations and evaluation process for the imminent changes in the Army, and had assured his commanders that the changes would be made on merit alone in the best interest of the country and the institution. **
** Three major generals are being promoted to lieutenant general. The Director General Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), Chief of the General Staff (CGS), Corps Commander 10 Corps, Director General Strategic Planning Division (SPD) will have new appointments as the planned reshuffle will necessitate it**, the sources said.
** Major General Nasir Janjua has been appointed as DGMO while Major General Ahmad Shuja Pasha is proceeding on an appointment abroad as his services have been acquired by the United Nations.** The slot of the DGMO is considered to be the most important assignment from the point of view of operations.
Three out of seven former DGMOs became the army chiefs including General Pervez Musharraf, General Jehangir Karamat, and late General Asif Nawaz Janjua. **Director General Rangers, Sindh, Major General Javaid Zia, will become the Corps Commander Karachi on getting promotion to the rank of Lt. General. He will be replacing Lt. General Azhar Ahsan Hayat, who will get a fresh appointment in Rawalpindi/Islamabad. **
** Major General Muhammad Liaquat, who is currently the commander of 9 Div, has been appointed DG Rangers, Sindh. Major General Nadeem Taj, Director General Military Academy, Kakul, is being promoted to the rank of Lt. General and being assigned to an important and sensitive slot. He had been Director General Military Intelligence (DGMI) and also served as General Pervez Musharraf’s Military Secretary (MS). General Nadim Taj was with General Musharraf in the plane on October 12, 1999 as his MS during the journey from Colombo to back home. **
** Major General Zahid Hussain, Div Commander 15 Div Sialkot, has been appointed as the DG Military Academy Kakul. Lt General Shafaatullah Shah, Corps Commander Lahore, who succeeded General Nadim Taj as MS to the President, is among the front-runners for three important posts supposed to fall vacant early next month as a result of the forthcoming changes/elevations, the sources pointed out. **
** The incumbent DG ISI Lt General Ashfaq Pervez Kiani, Commander 10 Corps Lt. General Tariq Majeed and CGS GHQ Lt General Salahuddin Satti are being considered for elevation to the rank of the four-star Generals.
The MS to the GHQ Lt. General Muhammad Sabir is also among the aspirants.** DG SPD Lt. General Khalid Ahmad Kidwai, who is on two-time extension and was superseded three years ago, is expected to hang his gloves in a couple of days.
The incumbent CJCSC General Ehsan-ul-Haq and VCOAS General Ahsan Saleem Hayat, will also call it a day in the second week of the next month. They have already started making farewell calls, the sources concluded.
When are other remaining Maj Gen to Lt Gen promotions scheduled for? Any clues?
Usually theyre also at the end of the yr, but wonder if they'll be before or after the issue of COAS is settled.

Musharraf shuffles army ranks to secure presidency
*Musharraf needs to be extra careful if and when he does doff the uniform…kaheen apnay ya Zia jaisa COAS na chun lay k laynay k deynay par jayen *

**Maj-Gen Nadeem Taj, once regarded as Gen Musharraf’s eyes and ears as head of the Military Intelligence, has been made director-general of the ISI and Maj-Gen Mohsin Kamal, who is little known in non-military circles, has been appointed as Corps Commander of Rawalpindi. As a brigadier, Gen Nadeem Taj had served as Gen Musharraf’s military secretary. He was later promoted as a two-star general, but he continued to serve in the same capacity when the army chief became the president. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
*** ISI, Rawalpindi Corps get new chiefs **
*** Six major generals promoted
Staff Report
ISLAMABAD: On the eve of doffing his uniform, President General Pervez Musharraf on Friday shuffled the top brass of the army to appoint loyalists in key slots in order to secure his future position as civilian president.
Musharraf has promoted six major generals to the rank of lieutenant general while appointing newly promoted Lt Gen Nadeem Taj as ISI DG in place of Lt Gen Ashfaq Pervez Kiyani who will be appointed soon to a key position. He has also appointed newly promoted Lt Gen Mohsin Kamal in place of Rawalpindi Corps Commander Lt Gen Tariq Majeed who will also be appointed soon to another critical position. However, it has not yet been announced what positions would be given to Lt Gen Kiyani and Lt Gen Majeed who will retire from service on October 13 and December 31 respectively.
Being the senior most three-star generals, who are eligible for further promotion, it is expected that one of them might be promoted as four-star general and appointed JCSC chairman in place of Gen Ehsanul Haq who will retire on October 7 while the other will also be promoted to the rank of four-star general and appointed in place of VCOAS Gen Ahsan Saleem Hayat who will also complete his three-year tenure and retire on October 7.
If promoted, Lt Gen Kiyani and Lt Gen Majeed will get three-year tenures to serve as four-star generals.
Chief of General Staff Lt Gen Salahuddin Satti is also in line to be promoted to four-star generalship. Though his seniority number is ten among the top generals (excluding two senior three-star generals Khalid Kidwai (SPD DG) and Asif Hayat (GHQ) who have not commanded any corps), Lt Gen Satti is also a contender for the coveted position in the Pakistan Army.
The other senior three-star generals are Lt Gen Safdar Hussain (GHQ), Lt Gen Syed Athar Ali (JS Headquarters DG), Lt Gen Waseem Ashraf (Gujranwala Corps Commander), Lt Gen Imtiaz Hussain (Adjutant General, GHQ) Lt Gen Afzal Muzafar (QMG, GHQ), Lt Gen Hamid Rab Nawaz (IG T&E, GHQ) and Lt Gen Muhammad Sabir (military secretary). While Lt Gen Safdar Hussain will retire on March 12, 2008, all others will retire on October 8, 2008.
When contacted by Daily Times, ISPR DG Maj Gen Waheed Arshad asked the media to avoid speculations about the next vice chief of army staff and JCSC chairman and other promotions and appointments, saying “such matters are treated professionally”.
Other three star major generals who have been promoted to the rank of four-star general are Maj Gen Javed Zia (GHQ), Maj Gen Shujat Zamir Dar (ANF DG), Maj Gen Muhammad Asghar (rector of National University of Sciences & Technology (NUST), Maj Gen Jamil Haider (GHQ). The promotion and posting of Maj Gen Nadeem Taj as ISI chief is ‘significant’ as he is believed to be a very close confidant of President Musharraf. Lt-Gen Taj was General Musharraf’s military secretary when the latter had taken over as Chief Executive on October 12, 1999. It is understood that President Musharraf will place all key loyalists and hardliners in the war against terrorism, insurgency, separatism and extremism in critical positions so that his famous “unity in command” approach continues after he doffs his uniform. With the ISI DG his trusted eyes and ears who cannot be changed by the next army chief (it is the PM’s prerogative), Musharraf hopes to keep a firm rein on the army. http://www.dailytimes.com.pk/default.asp?page=2007\09\22\story_22-9-2007_pg1_1
I'm thinking, Lt Gen Satti is 10th on the seniority list. If he is promoted VCOAS/CJCSC/COAS 9 other Gens including Majeed, Kiyani, Sabir, Hamid, Waseem and others will be superseded and retired. That is all the names that are floating as probables for the two key posts except the one promoted alongside will be gone.
This makes Satti's promotion a key move/option.
