I find the whole Terri Schiavo case deeply disturbing, it is probably the worst thing to happen to a person; being reduced to a level of total dependancy in life. Anyway..what do the rest of you think about what should be done? What would you want done if you were ever involved in a crippling accident? Who would you want to decide what happens to you if you had left no instructions behind?
Re: Euthanasia..
What a horrible, tragic case this is. I think one of the worst aspects of it is that they do not allow euthanasia ... she will be starved to death and it will take up to 4 weeks for her to die. And there is disagreement between parents and husband as to what she would have wanted. OMG I cannot begin to imagine the pain and suffering of everyone involved in that case.
The parents see some slight hope that she could be rehabilitated to some degree ... false hope? I dont know. None of us do.
I'd leave the decision to my husband, he knows me best. Tough decision though. If I were a total vegetable without brain activity, let me go. If brain activity but nothing else well, I'd be able to watch my boys grow up. Maybe selfishly, I'd like to see that ... but then again, the burden placed on the family is really quite unfair. So I'm really unsure about that and need to think about it some more.
May we all be spared such tragedy in our lives.
Re: Euthanasia..
Its quite a tragic case and quite heartbreaking - I think its wrong of the husband of not wanting her to live anymore .. maybe he sees her as a burden now! I dont know the real story or how she came in this stage but its real sad.
Re: Euthanasia..
How do you Guppies/Guppans (Americans) feel about the government intervening in this matter?
In a way, I don't blame them for stepping in as they didn't really have a choice. The parents and her family are appealing the decision to remove her feeding tubes. They believe she will get better in time eventhough she's been like this since 1990. The husband disagrees and has given the go-ahead to remove her feeding tubes.
I don't know what I would do if I were in such a situation..... it's difficult for everybody involved.
Is it really necessary to starve her to death? I mean, is this the only form of Euthanasia that can applied in this case? Or is there more to it than is being reported?
Re: Euthanasia..
euthanasia is criminal....
it is sinful....
u never know when Allah might change the person's state....
we have no right to put an end to anyone's life....
Re: Euthanasia..
Well, as I have stated in another thread, don't use extreme measures with me. I have a living will in effect stating this, that way everyone is clear about my wishes and what to do with MY body. I would rather have quality in life as opposed to quantity.
But this case bothers me because this woman can breathe, her body functions, basically she is being starved to death and I think that is horrible and one of the worst things you can do to anyone. I understand her husband's point of view but this is not the way to do it. Unfortunately she is right on that line.
As far as the government stepping in, that is a can of worms. I applaud in this case however I can see the problems down the line if the power of the state is overturned. This may turn out to be a "the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the one" scenario and she will be left off the feeding tube. Or I may be wrong.
Definitely conflicted over this one.
Re: Euthanasia..
After thinking a bit more on this most disturbing case...I think, if I were the parents, I'd fight and fight not to have my child starved to death. If I were defeated beyond hope, I'd then take a visit to a drug dealer and let her go in peace. This whole thing about starving her to death is just beyond comprehension. I think that is so much more awful than leaving her as she is, no matter what her wishes may have been. Starving to death is the most horrible way to die - it would be illegal in this country to do that to an animal ... so why allow it and force it to happen to a human being?
Re: Euthanasia..
This is precisely what I don’t understand about this issue either. Why must they do it this way? There has got to be some reason cause it makes no sense whatsoever.
Re: Euthanasia..
Its the unfortunate Law of the Land. Euthanasia is illegal and so is assisted suicide. But its legal to "refuse medical treatment". Since a feeding tube is considered to be medical treatment, the guardian is legally allowed to refuse that treatment.
Re: Euthanasia..
There are some things a person just cant ever imagine.Zakk:(
Re: Euthanasia..
That’s the problem with these cases, no Doctor wants to take the responsibility of taking a persons life so..it’s “better” to let the patient die..
Re: Euthanasia..
Saadia, Terry Schiavo has been in a persistent vegetative state since 1990 after suffering a heart attack. She was bulimic which means she had an eating disorder that compelled her to vomit after eating vast amounts of food. This caused an imbalance of her electrolyte and potassium levels. That’s what triggered the heart attack. So it’s kind of a tragic twist that now she is in danger of being ‘starved to death’ following the bulimia.
Her husband insists she wanted a dignified death. But from a parents point of view they want to hang onto any last chance.
From the NY Times,
“Terri is showing signs of being starved to death,” Mr. O’Donnell said they told him. "She is getting very tired. She is still alert, she still laughs. Her skin is beginning to dry.
“Her own mother cannot offer her daughter an ice chip in her mouth to make her comfortable,” he said. “Her own mother cannot be at her side without being watched by an armed police officer.”
very sad.
Re: Euthanasia..
I find it very ironic that she spent the better first half of her life starving herself, and the second half amidst a battle whether she should starve to death or not.

there are a lot of young people in china.

^ What does that have to do with anything? ![]()
Re: Euthanasia..
Sara, not funny *ok, maybe a bit in a wicked way
*
Small correction:
She induced the vomiting herself. Bullimia is a disorder but not a disease - she made the choice to do that.
Anyway - she is still aware enough to be awake. There should be something else done, not starving someone to death legally. That is inhumane.
I understand that she is in a vegetative state and in that state who knows what we feel or are aware of. We only have educated guesses to go with and that is not enough for me to starve someone.
However changing the law for one case is not the way to do it ,either. This case went through the system, too, so it should stand…
ARRRrrgggghhhh - see? I can’t bring together the right thing to do and the moral thing to do.

Re: Euthanasia..
And you never know if Allah might not. If you leave business of life in Allah’s hands alone then you get nowhere. Hey, Allah promised food. Let’s not work and live on mun-o-salwa.
And it’s not a question of putting an end to someone’s life. It’s a matter of putting someone out of her misery. Sawab ka kaam.
Re: Euthanasia..
Minah I wasn't joking, and I may sound cruel but she brought the heart attack upon herself if you'll read what Saima had posted. Now, it is sad what's happening and I hope to never be in this position and I cannot comprehend the anguish her family must be going through, but my first statement is the first thing that comes to my mind when I hear of this case.
