exactly ... shame meaning 'lanat' on him and the Italian team :p .

Denmark has ousted Bulgaria by beating them 2-0

A very high quality match is under way betweeen Italy and Sweden with Italy leading 1-0 at the half time.

GO Sweden :k:

What a brilliant goal by Ibrahimovic!!
Match ended with 1-1. Italy is in trouble :D

Wooohoooo, I'm a Sweden supporter for the rest of the EC (and Holland ofcourse :p )

What an entertaining match !! It ends in a draw...

Italy played like true champions in the first half. They probably played the best first half by any team so far in Euro 2004 with aggression and tactical attacks but inexplicably switched to defensive tactics early in the second half...

Ibrahimovic scored an outrageuosly magnificant goal in last 10 minutes to rescue Sweden and this leaves Italy's Euro hopes hanging by a thread. They must beat Bulgaria by a bigger margin to qualify and hope that match between sweden and Denmark turns out in their favour. Interesting last matches in prospect.

It probably was the best game of the tournament so far..

that was really an amazing goal by Ibrahimovic - i should have put him on my all-tournament team!

Not really..They just need to beat Bulgaria and hope that sweden & Denmark dont have a high scoring draw like 2-2 or 3-3.

But definitly it is going to be intresting.

^ Denmark has two goal cusion to thier advantage whereas Italy has none. Sweden's Goal difference will make them qualify anyway. So its a must that Sweden-Denmark match produces a result, preferrably in a swedish win for Italy.

Yes it will be really interesting.

^ exactly a sweden-denmark draw would keep italy out even if they win their next game.

Yaar even a 1-1 draw too would keep Italy out. Only scenario that would save Italy in case of a 1-1 draw would be a high scoring victory against Bulgarians. Any result b/w Denmark and Sweden would be good enough for Italy provided they beat Bulgaria.

        PLD W D L GS GA PTS
 SWEDEN 2 1 1 0 6 1 4
 DENMARK 2 1 1 0 2 0 4
 ITALY 2 0 2 0 1 1 2
 BULGARIA 2 0 0 2 0 7 0

Group C situation explained

If Italy fail to beat Bulgaria, Denmark and Sweden will advance to the quarter-finals.

If Sweden do not lose to Denmark, Sweden will advance to the quarter-finals.

If Italy win their game against Bulgaria the winner of Denmark-Sweden will join Italy in the quarter-finals.

If Italy beat Bulgaria and Denmark-Sweden ends in 0-0 draw, Sweden and Italy will advance to the last eight.

If Italy beat Bulgaria by two goals and Denmark-Sweden ends in 1-1 draw, Italy will join Sweden in the knock-out stages. However if Italy beat Bulgaria by just one goal and Denmark-Sweden ends in a 1-1 draw, Denmark will join Sweden in the quarter-finals.

If Italy beat Bulgaria and Denmark-Sweden ends in 2-2 draw, Sweden and Denmark will advance to the quarter-finals.

In the event of a tie, Uefa criteria will be used to separate the teams.

^ What a mess Italy is in !!

Bulgaria really surprised me. - they finished first in their group of the Euro Qualifiers - Remember that they finished in front of Croatia and Belgium to qualify for the Euros - and look at them now. Such a shame they couldn't deliver.

i wonder whether Krassimir Balakovs leaving might have influenced that process - Balakov ended his career last summer and played most of the qualifying games for Bulgaria - i suppose he was the heart and soul of the bulgarian national team that hasn't been replaced yet...

Paranoid Italy fear being frozen out by Scandinavian skulduggery

Italy are unhappy with the way Danish television cameras tracked their striker Francesco Totti for the whole 90 minutes of their opening game against Denmark and caught him spitting in the face of defender Christian Poulsen.

The pictures were used as evidence against Totti and subsequently led to the Roma captain receiving a three-match ban from UEFA. Totti will only return to action if Italy get to the semi-finals.

“I would like to see 50 television cameras at that game (Sweden v Denmark),” said Italy hardman Gennaro Gattuso, who will be suspended for the Bulgaria match after picking up two yellow cards in the first two group matches.

"Instead of watching us, everybody should go and keep an eye on what happens there.

"In these last few days everybody has been following our movements, now let’s see how they behave.

“I’m sick of being lectured. We are Italy and we have a tradition. Let’s look in their houses.”

I think Italy will win against Bulgaria. And for the sake of fairness I hope, that Sweden-Denmark will not end in a draw.

^ I hope so too. And i think Sweden and Denmark would want to go for a win. Specially Denmark, though they are the only team in Euro 2004 yet to concede a goal but they have only scored twice whereas Sweden has plenty of goals to show for.

I was just thinking that If Italy wins by three goal margin say 3-0, their goal difference would be +3 and even if Denmark -Sweden end in 2-2 draw, Denmark will have a goal difference of +2. Italy should go through then but the websites are reporting that Italy wont go through despite a bigger margin If there is a high scoring draw between scandinavians. I m confused.

^ The explanation is simple, no need to be confused. :)

If two teams have the same number of points, then the following criteria in this very order are used to determine the ranking:

1) Number of points when they played each other
2) Goal difference when they played each other
3) Number of goals scored when they played each other
4) Goal difference from all matches
5) Number of goals scored from all matches
6) UEFA coefficient
7) Fair-Play Rank
8) Draw

So if for example Sweden vs. Denmark ends in a 2-2 draw and Italy beats Bulgaria 6-0, Italy would still not go through because:

Italy, Sweden and Denmark would have 5 points all.

1) All 3 teams got 1 point from playing each other, ie. all drawed
2) Since all 3 matches are drawed, the goal difference against each other is equal too.
3) Sweden scored 1 goal against Italy and would have scored 2 against Denmark = 3
Denmark scored no goal against Italy and would have scored 2 against Sweden = 2
Italy scored 1 goal against Sweden and no goal against Denmark = 1

So Italy would loose on that 3rd criteria. Got it?

Yes, I got it. But there is a cliche in your explanation, Its not two teams, its more than two teams.

For example, Spain was ousted on 5th criteria, right? And Italy will suffer from 3rd criteria.
