In the 12th century, they captured Delhi from the Tomaras. Their most famous ruler was Prithviraj Chauhan, who won the First Battle of Tarain against an invading Muslim army but lost the second battle of Tarain the following year. This loss heralded a prolonged period of Muslim rule over northern India.

Re: Ethnicity and Pakistan
—=== fuzka ===—The fertile and prosperous plains of northern India had always been the destination of choice for streams of invaders coming from the north-west. The last of these waves of invasions were of tribes who had previously converted to Islam. Due to geographic reasons, Rajput-ruled states suffered the brunt of aggression from various Mongol-Turkic-Afghan warlords who repeatedly invaded the subcontinent. In his New History of India, Stanley Wolpert wrote “The Rajputs were the vanguard of Hindu India in the face of the Islamic onslaught.”

Chauhan or Chahaman(a) is a clan that ruled parts of Northern India in the Middle Ages. The Chauhan gotra is found among the Rajputs, Jats, Dhangars and Gujjars.

The Chauhans come from the region around the lakes of Sambhar and Pushkar in Rajasthan (formerly Rajputana), near Amber and present-day Jaipur.
The other famous seats of Chauhans of Rajput clans is Mainpuri in Uttar Pradesh as well as Neemrana in Alwar district of Rajasthan.
Chauhan dynasties established themselves in several places in Northern India and in the state of Gujarat in Western India, while the Sakhambari branch remained near lake Sambhar and married into the ruling Pratihara Rajput clan, who then ruled an empire in Northern India. In western India Chauhans are found at Devgadh Baria, founded by Dungarsinhji, a member of the Khichi Chauhan clan about 700 years ago.
The Chauhans later asserted their independence from the Pratiharas, and in the early eleventh century, the Sakhambari king Ajaya-Raja founded the city of Ajaya-meru, now known as Ajmer. In the mid twelveth century, his successor Vigraharaja enlarged the state to include much of northern Rajasthan as well as Haryana and Delhi.
The Chauhan kingdom became the leading Rajput state and a powerful kingdom in Northern India under King Prithviraj III (1165-1192), also known as Prithviraj Chauhan or Rai Pithora . The Chauhan kingdom collapsed after Prithviraj was defeated by Mohammed of Ghor in 1192 at the Second Battle of Tarain, but the Chauhans remained in Ajmer as feudatories of Mohammed of Ghor and the Sultans of Delhi until 1365, when Ajmer was captured by the rulers of Mewar.
A branch of the Chauhans, led by Govinda, the grandson of Pritviraj III, established themselves as rulers of Ranthambore from the thirteenth to the fifteenth centuries, when Ranthambore was captured by Rana Kumbha of Mewar.
The Hadas, another branch of the Chauhans, moved into the Hadoti region in the twelveth century, capturing Bundi in 1241 and ruled there until the twentieth century.
Chauhans of the Deora branch established the state of Sirohi in southern Rajasthan, and ruled there from the fifteenth century until Indian Independence.
The last Chauhan king ruled in Mainpuri, a district in Uttar Pradesh of India.
edit] Among Rajputs
The Chauhans were, along with the Paramara (Parmar), Pratihara (Parihara)(Gujjar), and Solanki (Chalukya) clans, considered to be one of the four Agnivanshi or “fire-born” Rajput clans. Rajkumar (Bhadaiyan State of Awadh, UP) and Bachgoti (Diyara State of Awadh, UP) are two other branches of Chauhans (both are primarily in Uttar Pradesh).
edit] Religion
In India, the majority of Chauhans are Hindus, but some are Sikhs (particularly in Punjab). In Pakistan, Chauhans are predominantly Muslims. Some Chauhans also choose to spell their name “Chouhan” (ﮀﻮﮨﺎﻥ).
edit] Chauhan Rulers of Ajmer
According to the Rajput bards the Chauhan is one of the four Agnikula or ‘fire sprung’ tribes who were created by the gods in the anali kund or ‘fountain of fire’ on Mount Abu to fight against the Asuras or demons. Chauhan is also one of the 36 (royal) ruling races of the Rajputs.
Chauhan dynasty flourished from the 8th to 12th centuries AD. It was one of the four main Rajput dynasties of that era, the others being Pratiharas, Paramaras and Chalukyas. The Chauhans dominated Delhi, Ajmer, Ranthambhor. They were also prominent at Sirohi in the southwest of Rajputana, and at Bundi and Kota in the east. Inscriptions also associate them with Sambhar, the salt lake area in the Amber (later Jaipur) district. Chauhan politics were largely campaigns against the Chalukyas and the invading Muslim hordes. In the 11th century they founded the city of Ajayameru (Ajmer) in the southern part of their kingdom, and in the 12th century captured Dhilika (the ancient name of Delhi) from the Tomaras and annexed some of their territory along the Yamuna River. Prithviraj III has become famous in folk tales and historical literature as the Chauhan king of Delhi who resisted the Muslim attack in the first Battle of TARAIN (1191). Armies from other Rajput kingdoms, including Mewar assisted him. However, Prithviraj was defeated in a second battle at Tarain the following year. This failure ushered in Muslim rule in North India in the form of the SLAVE DYNASTY, the first of the Delhi Sultanates.

As for Chauhans being Arab...No chance in Hell.
Chauhans were defenders of the Hindu religion. Look at the greatest Chauhan of all: Prithvi Raj Chauhan and his battles with Ghori.

Re: Ethnicity and Pakistan
It's quite sad reading all these 'battles of the castes'. People, you should accept who you are, be proud of who are and where you come from. There is nothing wrong with having hindu/bhuddist/jewish ancestry, and there is no point in making yourself foolishly believe false things. Castes of a certain ethnicity should be abolished as they only spread hatred and unfairness amongst people.
Caste should not be confused with ethnicity, which on this forum seems to happen a lot. If you are a Rajput, Jatt, mirpuri((?) not sure if its a seperate caste), you're still all Punjabi, you speak the same language, eat the same food, wear the same clothes etc. However, being a Pashtun, Kashmiri, Hazara etc is totally different. Here you have different cultures, languages, food, customs etc. You can not force them all to be one and share the same culture, language etc. That will cause problems. Ethnicity is your cultural identity and your genetics.
Also, why do people feel the need to find ancient arab/persian ancestry so important? We all came out of Africa once upon a time, we were all of Afro-semetic origin to begin with, but mutations in DNA occur and we are now different people so its prety pointless dwelling on ancient ancestry.
All the anti-hindu stuff really needs to be cut down too, I'm an ethnic dard (kashmiri) and I for a fact know that I had bhuddist and some hindu ancestors over 700 years ago, before islam came to kashmir. I'm proud of my ancestors who advocated peace, freedom of religeon and speech and the cultivation of education. I personally wouldnt want to find any arab ancestry in me either...and I don't understand what the big deal is with being arab?!?!? I personally dont find their history impressive at all(before islam they used to bury new born daughters alive) nor do I find them very attractive. However if you talk about Islamic history, that I do find very impressive but that encompasses a majority of non ethnic arabs such as persians, laventine arabs who are aryan, mongols, turks etc.
Just be proud of who you are and stop this nonsense.
Also, I'm curious as to why its mainly Punjabi people who try to dig out ancient persian/arab etc ancestry? I'm not saying others dont, but punjabi folks do seem to be at it more. :S
Re: Ethnicity and Pakistan
kera issue? kisda issue? Pakistan ich zinda-dil aaley rehndey nay- mein kaddey Pakistan ich problem vekhya nahin. I haven't found any issues you guys seem so concerned about... Seems guppies are very sensitive.. queer pra doesn't talk about issues bharatis are having.. I read gujjars in India are being killed and they are treated like king in Pakistan... You see, punjabis in india (sikh and gujjars) get treated poorly- we are happy to be in Pakistan
open your eyes and you will see keray issues....
Re: Ethnicity and Pakistan
I think the many invasions and long periods of ruling by outsiders * has put in an inferiority complex in many punjabis.*
Re: Ethnicity and Pakistan
The other issue is that Punjabi rulers are insecure that if they dare give non Punjabis their rightful share of power, they will lose their stranglehold over Pakistan and all the dirt cheap gas, electricity and revenue they are getting right now from rest of the provinces. Punjab has had a great deal in Pakistan, at the expense of everyone else. All this hatred of Punjab in Pakistan will go away once Punjabis give everyone equal power sharing rights.

indians never change words (waoo , good sign of character)
they use to say these words against west pakistan on behalf of east pakistan and till now they are using same words against punjab on behalf of sindhi etc
