I find it rather irritating when Pakistani’s actively discriminate against each other based on their own heritage, be it geographical region, language or some form of idiotic ethnicity. But then again Pakistanis have been using the race card for the past 20 years to win elections, gain political and economic control in the country. Basically they follow the old british adage of “Divide and Conquer”.
The question is has this issue become entrenched in our society like corruption? Are we generally a society that is racist against people who aren’t any different than us, other than basing it on artificial creations?
I mean who really gives a damn if someone is a proud to be sindhi, balouchi or punjabi when that said person shouldn’t be allowed to breath air? Whats with the over all need in our society to side with people from our made up “ethnicities” when they are scum bags? Shouldn’t a person’s actions count more than their background?
I say cut those 4 boundaries, and let the water flow on its own, one day the whole pool will have the same homogenous mixture having identical odor and color...
This card was built during 1947, not just 20 years ago... and its not just the one card btw... we have some religious cards as well
Agreed you can force people to forget their ethnicity. But in Pakistan it seems that people take pride in the fact that they are Punjabi or Sindhi or Pathan. Now explain something to me what does that accomplish? So your are some ethnicity? Does that make you better or smarter? Does it had anything to your character, moral values, upbringing or intelligence? Does it have any substantial aspect other than the fact its used to make people feel superior for no factual, logical or intelligent reason?
The religious cards are a very tricky one to work with and discuss. I rather stick with ethnicity first and then work my way up to religion.
As I said crack the boundaries, make physical links between all gaoon and dehaat... let the people be educated, spread people all over the country, do not let them confined themselves to only one or two cities (Karachi, Lahore), let them visit other areas by giving them fare communication opportunity. (example: Grey Hound service in North America)
Build free-ways between all the cities (not just one from Sharif-Poora to Isl.Secretariat), and let the people go round and come back home the same day after driving 6-800 Km.,
You need to re-build you mass communication system a much better...
On the day if you are able to link all the cities and gaoon dehhat with the roads, rails, highways, you will see the change which u desire...
People will forget their ethnicity, if they can get a McDonald Burger for lunch at a price of $1, and if their basic salary is $5 per hour… make something like this for Pakistan.
By force you can’t do anything, you need to look the negative side, and then create a positive side to neutralize the effect :-)
Does it had anything to your character, moral values, upbringing or intelligence? Does it have any substantial aspect other than the fact its used to make people feel superior for no factual, logical or intelligent reason?
Yes it's your culture, heritage. Why do you say I'm a Pakistani? for all I care a Mongolian is the same as you.
Would you not say Sindh has a distinctive culture to that of Punjab or NWFP? if so what is the problem in being proud of your identity.
Military power Thanks to our military for MQM, PPI and other ethnicity-based-parties trying to break power of PPP/PML/JI etc. I say break our military (break as in never allowed to grasp power, never interfere in politics etc.).
The biggest hurdle is the exploitation of the minority ethnicities and provinces by "big brother" Punjab. Once that stops, things should improve.
Classic example is the Gawadar port forced on Balochs who may or may not want it. The very idea that Balochs should be allowed to decide what is developed in their own areas sends some people into shock.
risc answer me something. What is the difference between a Punjabi and a Sindhi? As human beings what are the differences? Is one person smarter than the other? One is better looking? What are the substantive reasons one should be proud of ones ethnicity?
Khehkeshan lets look at any modern western country. Does the Military or Federal government require permission from the province/canton/state/county to build something there?
The answer is no. They do not require permission. But do they work with the local governments? Yes. The Gwadar port is a completely different issue. It is a mixture of national security, international business and increasing our military presence in the region. Should Baluchis get a share of the action? Yes. But that has nothing to do with one individual being proud of their ethnicity.
typically it is the hindustanis of karachi who keep harping on the lets forget ethnicity bit. probably because they dont really have much of a culture or identity anymore.
^ not true queer, Muhajirs have a pretty strong sense of identity. In my experience this question has mostly been raised by a (relatively affluent) Punjabi who have never had their access to resources limited by their ethnicity, and havent lived in Karachi. Not a hit job on Punjabies, but one's livelihood being influenced by one's ethnicity is often a powerful reason for people to place emphasis there. Sindhi nationalism and MQM's popularity have their roots in unequal access to resources. Level the playing field (without marginalizing anyone) and the ethnic differences wont matter that much.
risc answer me something. What is the difference between a Punjabi and a Sindhi? As human beings what are the differences? Is one person smarter than the other? One is better looking? What are the substantive reasons one should be proud of ones ethnicity?
1) Cultural upbringing, Language, Food to name a few. Each part of the world is distinctive.
2) Humans and Humans; no difference
3) No
4) No
5) It is who you are. Why do you learn to speak Punjabi, Sindhi or Baloch? Stick to the most universal language of all English. Forget your history. That is what you are suggesting. You dont have to discriminate someone being born in another part of the country, see it as a good thing. Different views, traditions, languages etc... make the world a batter place. Everything does not have to be grey.
Risc being proud of ones ethnicity is common but it doesn't mean its right. The fact that you are proud of your heritage doesn't mean you create subgroups within common identities.
An illustration. A lot of Pakistanis take their ethnic background - Punjabi or Sindhi as being more important than being Pakistani. You are basically creating a group that is different than others based on artificial notions of uniqueness.
This is used in politics to win votes and gain power and further divide the country.
I dont like it when ethnicity is used for politics and other violence. The only way you can remove prejudices is through education and treating others how you would want to be treated.
You cant expect a person to forget his heritage, language overnight. I wouldn't want to anyway. What you can do is make them feel part of the country, not some unwanted minority.
You can use exactly the same argument on countries. What is the difference between a Pakistani and Indian?
what you will have is cultureless people then. cross-cultural marriages are great but the question is whose culture do you take on?
are you willing to take on a culture which is not yours? if you married someone ethnically and culturally different to you - are you willing to adopt their culture instead of your own?
cross-cultural marriage is not as problem free as it seems. i assume more dominant indic ie punjabi, urduculture and norms would take over the whole of pakistan including far flung places such as chitral, turbat, hunza.
you are advocating cultural genocide lol!
People need to marry across sub-ethnicities more. It'll do away with the prejudice eventually.
