Essentials to take to girl's mendhi

We are from the boy’s family and need to know what to take to the girl’s mendhi. We have the following:

Few thalis with mendhi, tealight and confetti
A nice thali for oil, bride’s mendhi and her chooriah. Also adding one cone of mendhi (do we need more?)
A suit, shoes and handbag for her
A red dupatta to put on her (sorry, not sure what it’s called. Not v experienced with weddings!)
We’ll make garland of fresh flowers and 2 bracelets of flowers
Trays of mithai, chocs and fresh fruit for when we feed her for rasms
A basket of mithai for guests, bride’s family
A basket of fruit?

Is there anything else? Are there things in the list above that we shouldn’t / don’t need to take?

When we go in, my mum will put the dupatta on her and the rest of us will walk in with the thalis etc. Do we do a little dance first or do we go straight in to doing the rasms of putting oil on her and feeding her mithai etc and money etc. Thanks for any advice.

Clothes, bangles, flower jewellery and paranda and shoes

Mehndi, Oil, Paan, Glitter, Surma, Supari, Panjiri (it's done this way in our family)

Mithai, bangles to give away.

I've seen combined dances and praticed dances done before or during the rasms.

Dried fruit and nuts for the brides family?

In our family we do the rasms and then the dances/song contests

Re: Essentials to take to girl's mendhi

Someone here made a really NICE and useful checklist about this stuff. I wish I can find it, it will really help you.

Re: Essentials to take to girl's mendhi

why do you need the oil? and what type of oil is it?

what are you suppose to do with it?

hair oil for rubbing into the head of bride and groom?

Re: Essentials to take to girl's mendhi

really? Never heard of that!

Why would you want to grease them up on their day? lol

Re: Essentials to take to girl's mendhi

oh ive seen the bride and grrom getting all oiled up on mehndi but have seen it years ago no one really rubs oil on the the couple anymore at the mehndi's ive been to for the past few years but when they did the bride and groom's hair use to be out of control and would make their clothes all oily...i personally dont htink its a gud idea to oild the bride and groom's hair maybe u can take the oil jut for "show" and not actually use it

Re: Essentials to take to girl's mendhi

^lol - I think it's embarrassing. No one looks good in grease. I do not like to step out of my home if I ever oil up my hair. I do it only at night time and wash it off by morning.

Re: Essentials to take to girl's mendhi

hahaha..i do the same no way wud i step out with oily hair!!

Re: Essentials to take to girl's mendhi

^ lol... well its been going on for ages.. And i think the Rasm looks kindv cute, people put oil on ur hair..then mithai and mehndi on hands its all part of MEHNDI day and i love it!! Thts the only part the bride gets to enjoy otherwise shez jus suppose to sit there for hours doing nothing..while others enjoy on the Mehndi..

Re: Essentials to take to girl's mendhi

ewwww just a thought wut about those who 1st rub oil on hair then put mehndi on hand and feed u mithai with the same hand...yuucccckkk sorry guys but thought i should bring it up...

Lol Rsheikh. How about feed the mithai, dab oil THEN put mehndi :D Best thing is to let a sister or cousin sit throughout the rasms & guide every person who comes to feed the mithai. It works better that way.

You don't rub oil, just dab your fingers & kind of comb it through the hair. Its a Punjabi tradition if I am not wrong.

hibiscus to the list add uptan as well.

Re: Essentials to take to girl's mendhi

what about JAGRA'S??for hands n hairs..

LOL both ways yuck...would purposely wear my hair up so no one touches my hair and wont allow oil to be dabbed anywhere...def. do not want sticky hair nor do i want to eat oily mithai!! haha..lol

Re: Essentials to take to girl's mendhi

^ LOL...

Lol now you have got me really thinking if I want oil on mehndi tray or not. I always thought it was cute & really traditional as long as people doing the rasm know their limits but now I don't know.

Well about the touching mithai with oily fingers and vice versa .. a good solution would be cutting the mithai in small bites and stick a tooth-stick (called so?) into each .. No mess ..

Its def. something I am going to do as I am super cautious about hands and bacterias :p

Re: Essentials to take to girl's mendhi

^absolutely! toothpick in mithai/chocolate all the way! you don't know where those hands have been.

Tell me about it. I still haven't forgotten this particular stink that someone's hand had while they fed me mithai on my engagement. It still bothers me when I think about it. Worse part is I thought that person was a clean person.

I am actually thinking about getting bite sized gulab jamuns made. The store owner told me he'll take the order if the quantity is at least 100. They'll look more elegant than the cut up mithai.
