ISLAMABAD: Senator Enver Baig was on a token hunger strike against ad hocism in the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) in front of the Parliament House here on Wednesday. Makhdoom Amin Fahim, Chairman of the Pakistan People’s Party Parliamentarian (PPPP), also visited the hunger strike camp along with the party’s workers to support Baig.
Talking to reporters, Amin Fahim said that all the sports organisations in the country should be run according to the set rules and regulation. “PCB is a top sports body and it should be run according to its constitution. But unfortunately, the ad hoc system is ruining the PCB. President General Pervez Musharraf, who is also patron of the board, should take action,” he added. He said cricket in Pakistan had gone to the dogs. “The team’s performance has gone down and the ad hoc system in the PCB has destroyed the whole system of the most prominent sports organisation of the country,” he maintained. He said President Musharraf should take action against the high officials of the PCB instead of strengthening friendship with them.
Baid said former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif imposed ad hocism in the PCB in July 1999 to provide a chance to his friends. “Democratic system is the only way to run the affairs of the PCB,” opined Baig, who is also a member of the Senate Standing Committee on Sports. Baig said PCB chief Nasim Ashraf had promised to the Senate Standing Committee on Sports to implement the new constitution before January 31 this year. “But he lied to the honourable Senate committee and did not take a single step practically to implement the new constitution.” He alleged that the PCB officials were looting board’s money and there was no system of accountability in the organisation. “The PCB is a public property and it must work under the ministry of sports,” he concluded
