England V NZ

Andrew Strauss will win his first Test cap as England begin their home series against New Zealand at Lord’s.

Strauss will partner acting captain Marcus Trescothick at the top of the order after Michael Vaughan injured his knee during practice.

England are on a high following their historic victory in the West Indies.

But New Zealand are expected to prove tougher opposition, even though their build-up did not go smoothly and they lost heavily against Kent.

It may be unwise for Trescothick to read too much into that performance.

New Zealand have a good recent international record, having thrashed South Africa in a one-day home series before sharing honours in the Tests.

“We are playing an England team that is feeling pretty good about itself,” said visiting skipper Stephen Fleming, who will open the batting for only the second time in Test cricket.

"They have just had a very good winter and will be ready to get back on the horse in front of their home crowd.

“But I am confident about the team we have brought over, and we are looking forward to a very good series.”

Trescothick has had little time to prepare for his first Test as captain

Given West Indies’ display against England, it is perhaps disappointing that the Kiwis are raising the curtain for Brian Lara’s men later in the summer.

Although the battle for third place in the ICC Test Championship is a nominal one, it is deserving of being the summer’s main course rather than the starter.

Nevertheless, the menu promises to offer all the spice and intrigue of New Zealand’s last visit to English shores in 1999, when they won the Test series 2-1.

Vaughan’s injury threw England’s plans into disorder, not least because it meant Trescothick taking the reins just 24 hours before the start of play.

“Fleming is renowned as one of the best captains in the world at the moment,” Trescothick said.

“It’s not going to bother me particularly what he does. I’ve just got to focus on the job I’ve got to do for England.”

Cairns is embarking on his final Test series for New Zealand

England decided not to tinker with the pace attack that performed so well in the Caribbean, despite the excellent recent form of James Anderson.

And Durham all-rounder Paul Collingwood again missed out as the selectors decided they needed the extra variety provided by spinner Ashley Giles.

The Kiwis will be without their fastest bowler, Shane Bond, who is still working towards full fitness following a serious back injury.

But it is no tragedy for the visitors as Daryl Tuffey, Chris Martin, Chris Cairns, Jacob Oram and spinner Daniel Vettori managed well in his absence and can continue to do so.

England boast a significant historical edge over New Zealand at home, winning 22 and drawing 18 of the 44 Tests played.

But of greater relevance is the fact that in the 13 Tests since 1983, the record stands at three wins each.

England: M E Trescothick (capt), A J Strauss, M A Butcher, N Hussain, G P Thorpe, A Flintoff, G O Jones, A F Giles, M J Hoggard, S P Jones, S J Harmison.

New Zealand: S P Fleming (capt), M H Richardson, N J Astle, C D McMillan, S B Styris, C L Cairns, B B McCullum, D L Vettori, J D P Oram, D R Tuffey, C S Martin.

not a good day for Marcus as a stand-in skipper.

Really good cricket is going to happen in this series. Justa Gut feeling anyway NZ on top at first day no matter how much Eng try they can not get rid of the Loss in 1999 and this time Cairns England watch out for him.

:D me too

yeaaa:hula:

I just told my brothers to check fox sports! when the switched the channel! the match is coming!:hula:

i’m off:D

NZ are 314-6

What an innings by Chris Cairns, he scored 82 off 47 balls which included 10 fours and 4 sixes. In the process he also created the record of hitting the highest number of sixes in test cricket, surpassing the great Viv Ricahrds. He has now hit 86 sixes in test cricket. :k:

Nikema and F&B I can broadcast if you so wish.

I agree!

It was an absolute treat to watch!

Too bad he didn't get a hundred on his last innings at Lords. :(

Phir karo na??

what a debut!!!

100 in Lords!

Andrew Strauss!:k:

and Chris Cairns! pure entertainment!:k:

cairns :k:

good batting by strauss :k:

the match is evenly poised i think, i am having the sharf of watching the test series live on channel 4  ] anyways i think england let the kiwi’s off the hook on the morning of day - 2, they should’ve tried 2 restrict the kiwi’s to 350 or below but cairns was awesome, he smashed the english bowlers all over the park with ease, i am very happy for him that he made his presence felt in his 2nd last test match of his test career :frowning: anyways england made a solid start and a ton on debut for andy strauss, which including some gr8 strokes, i like his cover drive he htis the ball very hard with his bottom hand especially, tresco’ played well as well shame he couldn’t get a ton 2.

now butch’ and nasser + thorpy + freddie + jones {wk} must :help: england build a sizeable lead and try to put the kiwi’sunder pressure.

Boy O Boy are we not ready for a great Lords Finish tomorrow...i am backing Eng for a test victory although it will be very sad to see chris cairns walk out losing in his last appearance at Lords...... great final day is in offering....The english season culdnt have started in a better way.....

Men to look for: Grahem Thorpe and Nasser Hussian and Tuffy and Vettori.

BTW where is SadiSabi? can any KK guppie from England get her on KK for the season.
Ehsan bhi i am behind Dialup connection these days so B/C would not work for me but thanks fopr offer...i hope its valid all season....?

England should win it.

they've got a lot of experience in their middle order and some class in Vaughan, Thorpe, Trescothick. Kiwi bowling apart from Tuffey and Vettori is nothing special. lets see though. looks like an intriguing contest.

England 35/2. Require another 247 to win. The match is becoming interesting.

its gonna b draw...

6:41 CT, just woke up to go to Gym....Eng need 195 runs in two sessions....i think about 20 runs more than what Eng can do in two sessions....still very interesting...lets see if Flintoff repeats his Lords innings from Last Yr against SA.?

830 CT just came back....Eng require 139 in 40 ovars...if NZ dont geta wicket in next half hours, the game is ENglands....in case of wisket
A qucik 20-30 runs can ensure the gamefor Eng, so if they go for a pich hitter Either Flintoff or one of the Bolwers.....and a wicket falls as i write and Thorpe is sent in.....

am i talking to myself...and only one interested in this game?

England 198/3. Require another 84 runs in 23 overs. England are going to be one up in the series by the end of the day. :k:

England 282/3. Won the match by 7 wickets. The highlight of Englands innings was an unbeaten 103 by Naseer Hussain and 51 not out by Thorpe. Together they put on an unbeaten 139 for the 4th wicket which led to victory for england. NZ bowling without Shane Bond is very ordinary and they will struggle to beat England. Well played England and on to the next match.
