Sri Lanka 318, Jayawardene 180
England 193, Herath 6/74
Just proves that England are no world-beaters in sub-continental conditions
They have no excuse this time. Most of their players arrived with their batting coach Gooch in Sri Lanka a month before the start of the test series
Sri Lankan players on the other hand are travel weary and have had little time to prepare for the first test (being held just 5 days after the Asia Cup)
I don't know why Sri Lanka don't play Herath in ODIs as well. He is a genuine wicket-taking bowler, caused Pakistan all sorts of problems in the 2009 test series as well
And there **ends the second day** in Galle, with Sri Lanka leading by 209 with five wickets in hand. Still very much all to play for and tomorrow morning now becomes a session that will probably decide this match.
England again flopped with the bat but again showed all their ability with the ball in fighting back and have not too much to get through to set up a manageable chase. But Sri Lanka will be pleased with runs on the board - that is generally always the place to be - and they are still favourites for this match.
Sri Lanka lead by 209 runs with 5 wickets remaining
Stumps - Day 2
54.1
Swann to Herath, OUT, Herath swings and misses! That was his only approach, Swann came round the wicket and Herath looked to slog it over midwicket, missed as it turned away a hint and crashed into the stumps
Swann to *****v, OUT, Swann picks a five-for! Turns in from a good length outside off, and strikes him on the pads as he tries to defend with bat close to pad, was there at involved? Asad Rauf raises his finger but the batsman has called for a **review**. Struck him in line, it struck pad first and then the bat, would have gone on to clip the bails. It's the umpire's call and the original decision is upheld.
**S *****v lbw b Swann 18 (71m 63b 2x4 0x6) SR: 28.57 **
50.6
Swann to Herath, no run, went on straight, quicker through the air, struck on the pads but that landed on leg and probably would have gone down, didn't appear to straighten, it held its line and despite the appeal for lbw, they didn't go for a review
53.3
Panesar to Herath, no run, **appeal for a catch**, tried to sweep it from outside off, seemed to go off the thigh towards first slip where Anderson took it, came off the thigh, not sure it hit the bat, they didn't call for a review, we need to take a closer look, not conclusive
53.6
Panesar to HAPW Jayawardene, no run, comes well down the track and tries to drive that through midwicket, struck on the pads, but he was miles down the crease, appeal for lbw turned down
54.4
Swann to Welegedara, no run, turns in and raps him on the pads, appeal for lbw from Prior but that seemed to be going down the leg side
55.1
Panesar to HAPW Jayawardene, no run, appeal for a stumping, Prasanna reaches forward and tries to sweep that square, it turned away to beat the swing of the bat, Prior collected and took off the bails and Prasanna has just managed to drag his foot back in, it was on the line for a moment but back in time before the bails were taken off
56.3
Swann to HAPW Jayawardene, no run, goes for the sweep and misses, tossed up and it struck him on the thigh but well outside the line, stifled appeal for lbw, turned down
Nine down and the end of a stand that would have frustrated England, lasted almost 17 overs for 40 useful runs. The lead is now nearing 300.
70.5
Panesar to Welegedara, OUT, Gone, good catch by Strauss diving to his right, around a good length and it turned away, stabbed at that one, reaching forward, gets an outside edge and Strauss clasps it with both hands
**UWMBCA Welegedara c Strauss b Panesar 13 (65m 53b 2x4 0x6) SR: 24.52 **
Sri Lanka lead by 292 runs with 1 wicket remaining
71.4
Broad to HAPW Jayawardene, 1 no ball, caught and bowled, Sri Lanka have been bowled out, banged in short and Prasanna went for the pull, got a top edge and Broad, called for it, to take it easily. Oh dear! It's a no-ball, a big one so forget all that I typed just moments earlier. A big no-ball from Broad and the umpire called for a replay about that, just to double-check. Stunned England faces all around as the celebrations have been brought to an abrupt halt
Panesar to HAPW Jayawardene, SIX, the lead is over 300 now, Prasanna charged down the track and swatted that hard over the bowler's head, all the way for six this time, Broad must be cursing himself
72.5
Panesar to HAPW Jayawardene, FOUR, nicely done, was with the arm, comes down the track does Prasanna and just lofts it over mid-off, well timed
73.3
Broad to Lakmal, FOUR, short and wide and Sri Lanka are enjoying this, that's been cut away hard over point to beat third man to the ropes
Sri Lanka lead by 310 runs with 1 wicket remaining
luck is also not wid English team
74.3
Swann to HAPW Jayawardene, 2 runs, missed run-out chance, played through square leg, Trott collects in the deep and returns a wide throw, Prior collects and tries to flick it into the stumps at the strikers end and misses, Prasanna was miles out of his ground
