i told my mom to ask she said it wont be right asking them that question. I have a lot of nice fancy suits and i can buy more but i dont want my heart set on something and then later find out i have to wear wut they give me if they do ill be really upset if that happens. This happend to my friend i felt so bad she got her own suit and on the day of the engagement her MIL made the poor grl change while the guests were over into the suit they got for her, her makeup did not match her dress since she changed and she was crying hysterically. I dont want to end up like her and my mom is being too "shy" in asking about the freaking dress.

It's better not to ask them (in-laws) about getting ur own dress, cz u can buy things acc to ur choice any time in life.. these are few occasions where even in-laws would like to get u something, hope ur getting what i mean..
My Engagement dress was from in-laws and it looked stunning, it was a shalwar kameez something not too heavy but with the make-up, jewel it looked fab.. And i loved my entire look... Had dupatta on my head on the day....

I actully dont mind if my in laws get me a dress in fact i want them to b/c i no my MIL has a very good choice but not everyone inlaws bring or give them an engagement suit. I just wante dto make sure if i am wearing my own or will they be giving me one so i dont have to worry about buying my own and if i were to buy my own i had enough time to place and order to get it by the engagement which btw is in March. I ahve no way of knowing wut i will be wearing and who will be arranging that!

I had a very big engagement at KDA lawn n i wore magenta lehnga with duppata on my head,got my makeup done 4rm Beauty parlour n My Engagement dress was from in-laws :D
what means big engagement ? i mean how many people did u invited...i would like to see ur dress...its sounding amazing :)

as i know normally the in laws give u the engagement dress.
my engagement was a t home..just invited friends and there moms n family. i think abt 40 ppl.
at first i wore one of my suits(rusty pink shalwar kameez not heavy)..then when my inlaws arrived i changed the suit. (pink n light blue shalwar kameez also not tht heavy)
so at the time they were giving me ring i wore their suit till the end of the mangni
wore my dupatta on my head...looks prettier i think

wow these are all soo beautiful-- i like the last one alot- but i dont think i can wear sleeveless and capris- its a big no no in my family- but i really love that last dress and the color combination is great- how wuld i do the sleeves what wuld look good?? short or long?? or in the middle and any other ideas on other color combinations bc i want to keep my wedding dress red- so how about another color for this dress??-

Also, I think that in today's day and age, MIL's or SIl's should ask the bride about her preference in colours/style/cut. It's rediculous that you want to welcome this girl in to your family but you want to do it your way and not give damn about how she wants it to be. I'd be freaking out and losing sleep if my MIL decided to not comment on the valima/engagement jora and kept it a surprise. I mean, what if I totally hate that colour? Some say, well it's just one day, make them happy. I say, heck yeah it's one day but it's a very important day in MY life, should I not be involved? If I despise the colour purple, should I HAVE to wear it on a day that hundreds of photos will be taken and I'll be treasuring the memories for a lifetime???
Also, this whole thing about having to change your clothes despite the make-up being totally off, that's absurd. Where was the MIL when the girl was sobbing? That incident weakens the relationship from DAY1.
Honestly, poepel really need to open their eyes and relaizez, we are 2009. No MIL should have complete say in her bahu's joras. It's plain rude and inconsiderate.
Well, sleeveless and capris are a big no no in my family, too and I also love this color combination is great. I would make it with half sleeves and churidar. 
Even if you want to keep your wedding dress red, watermelon pink and turquoise is a combination to die for. Look here for more lovely combinations from Nomi Ansari.

ohh one of my favorite nomi ansari outfits! Just love the green and the kaam is to die for! sigh I wonder - has anybody ever seen this outfit up close or tried it? Is it as nice as it looks in pics?
