Emirates Airline Question

has anyone travelled Emirates recently? We are travelling with them next month inshallah from USA and I wanted to get more insight on carry on luggage. I looked it up on their website and it appears for economy class you are only allowed ONE carry on item. Does that mean I cannot take a separate purse or camera bag? Are they strict about the weight and measurements of the carry on item as well? We have the standard 21 inch carry on roller suitcase (which we have used for domestic travel quite a bit), but I have heard that may be too big for international travel such as Emirates because it has wheels and a handle and that some airlines make you place your carry on in a bin to see if it fits. I don’t want to have issues at the airport so any help/tips/advise will be appreciated!

Re: Emirates Airline Question

you can take one carry-on, one small item like purse, laptop PLUS a small item like an umbrella, a camera, reasonable amount of reading material etc. any assistive devices like stroller, wheelchair etc are NOT counted towards free allowance.

you can check-in 2 pieces of luggage, each weighing NOT more than 23 kilos or 50 lbs.

yes, the carry-on must fit in the measurement box that is provided at the check-in counter. a standard sized carry-on bag is fine within the weight constraints which is, i think, 7 kilos.

Re: Emirates Airline Question

thanks for the quick reply! do you know the exact measurements of the measurement box? any recommendations on carry on luggage that will fit in the box without trouble?

also, are you allowed to take food from home with you in your carry on? i'm pregnant and will be travelling with a toddler...so will definitely need to pack snacks and food for our 16+ hour venture and want to make sure its possible.

Re: Emirates Airline Question

23 cm x 40 cm x 55 cm
(9 in x 15.5 in x 21.5 in)
Wheels and handles included.

as far as solid food is concerned, you can take on-board with you a reasonable amount of food for inflight use. however, fluids may not exceed 100 ml in clear bottles...[baby milk is exempt]. again, fluids are allowed on board if you buy them after you pass the security check.

the thing is they serve more than enough food but if you are looking for a specific food then you are allowed to take it onboard with you.

Re: Emirates Airline Question

We recently flew with Emirates.
I was allowed a purse and a hand carry luggage. My husband was told he can only have one bag. He was carrying a backpack for laptop and another hand carry so we checked in his hand carry bag.

I know you can check in a stroller as well which is not counted towards check in items.

I dont think you can carry bag for laptop, a purse, a camera and another hand carry bag. For women they allow a purse and a hand carry bag. May be you can put your camera in your purse if it fits.

You can take snacks with you.

Re: Emirates Airline Question

To take food depends really about getting it through security, solid food is ok. Fluids may be limited.

Emirates has good allowance for baggage, and their big planes (would be a B777 or A380) can easily accomodate any regular carry-ons (known as wheelies or rollaboards). They will fit easily don't worry.

They have excellent inflight entertainment as well as good meals onboard. They should be able to help you with baby food as well as give you basinet for child if possible. Make sure you let Emirates know you're traveling with small baby.

You'll be traveling on one of the world's finest airlines currently. Much much better than any european or american airlines.

Do report back about your experience once you finish your journey

Re: Emirates Airline Question

Depends on the person at the check-in counter. Once they did not allow me to have my carry-on roller suitcase plus backpack with laptop and camera. I had to check-in my suitcase. But on the return journey no one bothered to ask/check and I bought both items inside plane.

Re: Emirates Airline Question

^ when they made you check in your carry on, did they charge you? I'm worried about bringing my 21 inch carry on and having them stop me because it's too big to fit into the bin during one of my trip legs ( we have layoverS in Singapore and Dubai for a few days each before reaching Lahore).

Re: Emirates Airline Question

sometimes, flights originating in the west are a bit lenient and if the carry-on bag is bigger they offer to check it in at NO charge but in the check-in agents in the subcontinent aren't that generous. they will charge you extra.

i was a victim of this type of situation when i traveled to India on Etihad Airways. they checked in my carry-on bag for free but, on my way back from Delhi, i had to pay $50 US extra.

Re: Emirates Airline Question

That's what I thought :). Better safe than sorry I guess.

Re: Emirates Airline Question

No. There was nothing else for check-in, I travel light :D

One trick is to go early when check-in counters open. Normally they are lenient in the beginning.

Re: Emirates Airline Question

How are the bassinet row seats? Seat guru and other websites show them to have more leg room. I am contemplating calling Emirates and asking them to seat us there ( even though we won't need the bassinet) so I can have more leg room with my big preggo belly :). Hubby doesn't like the idea, as the middle row has 4 seats so someone else will most likely be seated next to us. Can anyone share their experience?

Re: Emirates Airline Question

I just came back yesterday from pak and travelled via Emirates. Its fun.

the answer to your question is, bassinet row seats do have more leg room so yes its definitely comfortable and more helpful. But here is another observation: Like every airline they have different zones too. Their "F" zone has wider seats and more leg room as compared to other zones in economy. Now how i got seat in F zone while travelling from here and E while coming back, i dont know. But certainly it was a better experience in F.

I suggest you go a little earlier and try to get a bassinet row seat in F zone which should help.

Re: Emirates Airline Question

^ how do you know which seats are in the "F" zone?

do you mind sharing your seat numbers?

also, how was your experience with carryon luggage? are they really particular about the size as well as having a small second piece such as camera bag?

Re: Emirates Airline Question

keep in mind that it will be very noisy due to kids crying in the front [bulkhead] seats. also, i believe they assign those bulkhead seats with bassinet to those mothers who have infants and need them.

Re: Emirates Airline Question

yes, you are allowed a carry-on bad, a woman's purse/briefcase/laptop AND a SMALL item like camera/umbrella/reading material.

Re: Emirates Airline Question

Zones are mentioned on the boarding cards. So its clearly alloted while checking in. I didnt request for it but you may especially if you are there earlier.

My carryon luggage was a little over 6 kg which is their new limit but they still allowed it. It used to be 10 kg.

Also with the second piece i'd strongly recommend to put it in a laptop back-pack which they normally dont even bother to check.

Re: Emirates Airline Question

why can’t you get seats assigned online?

btw, what do you mean by zones? you mean zones separated by galley/washrooms in Economy class?

i believe Emirates allows seat selection at the time of booking.

** @nabz, why don’t you log on to Emirates, click ‘Manage My Reservation’ and then select your seat.**

Re: Emirates Airline Question

I didnt try online as i got the reservation via travel agent. So in the new aircrafts A380-800, the business or first class is on second floor while leaving economy on first. “F” zone is right where the business class used to be i.e. in the first section of aircraft. Followed by E, D and C respectively. So C would be right by the tail. F clearly have the better seats, much roomy. Thats why when flying from jfk, they first announced C then D and E to get seated and F at the last so they occupy the first section seats while rest is already filled up.

Now I just took a look at my itinerary, and my seats were already allocated. The one that made me sit in F zone was 50C. While upon return it was 54 J when I fall in E zone.
So apparently I dont see that from seat you can pick which zone it would be in. It just appear to be something decided by the officer on check-in counter.

Re: Emirates Airline Question

^ we have selected our seats. just concerned about getting the best seats for our 16+ hour flight to DXB, so debating between bassinet row vs front of economy side row.
