Concert Tshirt, knee length mini over colored tights, ankle booties & lace gloves with the fingers cut off
Or something like Dynasty....blouse with strong shoulder pads, high waisted slacks
Teased out big hair...blue eyeliner/mascara/eyeshadow

Big hair for sure (curls or straight with lots of hairspray) even a high up ponytail, neon tanks underneath an over-sized stripy t-shirt, denim jackets in the lightest wash, funky bright coloured nails, leggings or leg warmers, for shoes I would do the glittery TOMS (a modern touch would look so neat)

haha....isn't? this is why I don't like any sort of themed parties, becomes quiet pricey and those 'costumes' will never see the daylight again

for me it’s just the time thing…I really don’t have it…especially when the invite comes a week before the event.
the pricing is affordable…you can always find old stuff at charity stores for almost nothing…heck a bright blue blazer with shoulder pads should run me $6.99 at Goodwill. 
The problem is finding the time to go there and get it.
meanwhile I have loads of hairspray and safety pins at home…

okay...so the folks organizing are pleading for everyone to take it seriously.....I don't blame them....seen too many themed parties flop due to desi attitudes about dressing up in costume.
I need pictures folks.
And please.....no leggings....I simply don't have the body style for it and I'm not keen to show off my booty at a desi event.

Everyone's mentioned most of my ideas, perhaps the grunge look from the late 80s?
I'd go as Maverick...you just need a jumpsuit and a pair of aviator shades :D

If its a desi party, you can dress up in desi stuff, big hair was in for desis too at that time, a bandana with the ends hanging over the shoulder, big plastic earrings or just big earrings/ skirt with pazaibs.

Instead of big hair with tons of hairspray, you could also just wear a side-ponytail... as for clothes, the brighter the better! Leg warmers are very 80s too!

I was thinking about a desi take on the whole thing but honestly I found that harder than doing the western outfit.
I’m gonna go at lunch if I find the time to see what’s available. I think the cheesy accessory stores should have lots of plastic stuff…maybe some big hoop ear rings and chunky bangles.
