I agree. Once these things start, there is no going back. Every year the celebration will be greater than the last and will contain more unislamic things. Not in all gatherings but in a few. This will then be copied by others next year and so on. You can’t help it becoming something like Christmas, with it’s own set of rituals and extravagance which would have just as much religion in it as there is in Christmas.
Plenty of mullahs rely on bidaat (fatiha khwanis, chaleeswan, mahafil e naat, meelad, urs etc. etc.) for their livlihood so they have a material interest in promoting and perpetuating them.
