Eid for Hindus, Diwali for Muslims

Re: Eid for Hindus, Diwali for Muslims

Meant Navrathri

Re: Eid for Hindus, Diwali for Muslims

Thats interesting that Diwali is celebrated differently in different areas. I think people from South are more energetic while celebrating festivals like Ganpati Asthapna (hope I named it correctly)

Re: Eid for Hindus, Diwali for Muslims

We call it Ganapathi or Ganesh chaturthi. ( I don't know what chaturthi means)

Re: Eid for Hindus, Diwali for Muslims

in south we call it deepavali not diwali

and vinayaka chavati for ganesh chaturthi.......

diwali is very big in my state, and i agree about sweets with southie uncle, early in the morning lol
it's celebrated in two days here naraka chaturthi and deepavali where we have puja to laskhmi devi on deepavali day , sweets and prasads are made offfer to god around 11-12pm items would be nowhere near what north indians make especially sweets. main thing here is to have deepas (lamp/candle) lighting entire house in the evening

ganesh chaturthi is big in my state too, can't say same for other south indian state when i was in chennai i could hardly see people celebrating festival

Re: Eid for Hindus, Diwali for Muslims

^ indeed - had forgotten. Early morning take a bath dress up in best clothes have idling chutni breakfast with some kesari. Then sweets. Lighting of the lamps - how could I forget? That was very important.

Deepavali is what we also called it.

And yes - vinayaka something also instead of Ganesh chaturthi.

Thanks Babloos!

Re: Eid for Hindus, Diwali for Muslims

One of my dad's associates is Hindu. He's been working for us for the passed 6 years. For the past few years, Eid and Diwali have fallen on or around the same dates. Despite needing help, my dad is more than willing to accommodate to his needs, because he respects us and our religion.
Last Diwali, we gave him and his wife clothes, and sent sweets for the kids. And during Eid, they sent mithai and other traditional sweets to us.

Aside from worshipers of the Hindu faith, I've been raised to respect and acknowledge any faith that I am associated with my relation or acquaintance.

For example, at work, during Christian holidays, I partake in the festivities and exchange gifts with the staff.

Living abroad, we have to make our selves comfortable by making those around us comfortable with us.

Re: Eid for Hindus, Diwali for Muslims

taking bath early in the morning, dress up in new clothes and having sweets before going for Eid prayers is also major part of Eid Festival :)

Re: Eid for Hindus, Diwali for Muslims

Exactly, people feel comfortable when you share your joys with them. There is a Hindu colleague in our office who knows much about Muslim Festivals and asks for Shab e Barat's Halwa in advance. He also brings sweets when he comes back from Diwali hoildays. :)

Re: Eid for Hindus, Diwali for Muslims

we in south tend to eat less sweets compare to northern part.
and morning sweets is big no,even though i eat at any given time :D

like southie said just one or two items of sweet like kesari or chakara pongal, and payasam (kheer i think) milk with mix of semia, there are many flavours in payasam
on ganesh chaturthi though we make laddu and other sweet items

Re: Eid for Hindus, Diwali for Muslims

On choti Eid (Eid after Ramadan) eating sweet is considered as Sunna and as per some traditions on Eid day Satan goes on fasting so its necessay to break fast before going for prayers.

On Badi Eid (Qurbai wali Eid) its other way around. People don't eat anything until they offer Eid prayers.

Re: Eid for Hindus, Diwali for Muslims

How is the status of Holi in South. I think its also a northern festival.

Re: Eid for Hindus, Diwali for Muslims

Not much but people nowadays celebrate in town and cities by throwing colours, cultural invasion is happening(for the good part)
same for rakhi,it's little bit more popular then holi, most of guys won't attend school/college on that day lol :p
i remember it was heartbreak day for many of my friends.

biggest festival are deepavali, sankranthi, vijay desami (dussera) and ganesh chaturthi, sivarathri, vaikunta ekadasi

lol we have way too many :D

Re: Eid for Hindus, Diwali for Muslims

I used to think that navratri, Sivratri, ekadasiDasehra all are part of deepawli. May be they fall near each other.

Never heard about sankranthi? Isn't Dussera the event for burning Rawan's and therefore connected to deepawli?

Re: Eid for Hindus, Diwali for Muslims

Sankrathi is at the end of winter...and there starts kite flying in india...

Re: Eid for Hindus, Diwali for Muslims

Never could fly kites!

Re: Eid for Hindus, Diwali for Muslims

Navaratri literally means nine nights in Sanskrit. Navarathri represents celebration of Goddess Durga and her manifestation in form of Shakti [Energy or Power] . She fought and slayed the dreaded demon/rakshasa king Mahishasura and his various demonic minions over a period of 9 days. The last day was when she killed Mahishasura ofcourse. It usually falls in october in the month of Ashvin.

Deepawali/Diwali has several significant events associated with it. The most popular ones are
1.The return of Lord Rama after his exile. The lamps/diyas were lighted in rows to welcome him.
2.Victory of Lord Krishna and his consort Sathyabhama over the demon Narakasura.
3.Goddess Lakshmi Puja:Diwali marks the end of the harvest season in most of India. Farmers give thanks for the bounty of the year gone by, and pray for a good harvest for the year to come. Traditionally this marked the closing of accounts for businesses dependent on the agrarian cycle, and is the last major celebration before winter. Goddess Lakshmi symbolizes wealth and prosperity, and her blessings are invoked for a good year ahead.
Deepawali usually falls in Oct/November in the month of Karthika

Shivaratri falls in Feb in reverence of Lord Shiva.

Makar Sankranti is a major harvest festival celebrated in various parts of India. According to the lunar calendar, when the sun moves from the Tropic of Capricorn to the Tropic of Cancer or from Dakshinayana to Uttarayana, in the month of Pausha** in mid-January, it commemorates the beginning of the harvest season and cessation of the northeast monsoon in South India.

Re: Eid for Hindus, Diwali for Muslims

makara sankranti is probably biggest in my place..

it celebrated throughout india including northeast parts like assasm with defferent names, tamil people call it pongal
i think it's similar to basanth festivel in ur place...

in my region we celebrate it like 3-5 days around jan especially in villages it goes around 5days ,this is also time where we go to our ancestors grave offer food/clothes

Re: Eid for Hindus, Diwali for Muslims

Basant is celebrated in Mid Feb in Pakistan, but due to some dangerous sports like kite having thread (made from broken glass) it got banned.
