Education in Pakistan [split: Austrian company pledges extra $150 million]

haha wow, you guys are so clearly bias towards musharraf. i’m not here to bash his regime or the progress in pakistan over the last 6 years, but most of us forget that all of this economic development doesn’t mean anything if investments aren’t being made at the grass-roots social welfare level.

without stable social programs (like hospitals, better educational institutions, etC), you can’t expect pakistan to truly progress or become a better nation. sure, under musharraf we’ve had trememdous foreign direct investment and major economic development in pakistans urban centres but the majority of the country is still illiterate and almost 1/3 people still live in poverty.

perosnally i wouldn’t be too impressed with an increase in fdi that’s leading to an increasing gap between the rich and poor. perhaps musharraf can truly improve his ‘legacy’ by pushing away some of that money from his military spending and on worthwhile causes?

just my thoughts.

Re: Austrian company pledges extra $150 million in gas exploration projects in Pakist

dude have you been sleeping, education has improved a million times today then it was in ganja era, we have new multi million dollars universitys being setup by forign companies, education citys are being made in lahore, karachi and islamabad, all unis and collages are now expanding there campuses and setting up much bigger ones.
look at UMT in lahore it went from a house to a massive campus, this has happened to alot more unis, look at UET a leading engineering uni in lahore, its new u/c campus is 10 times the size, also gov. college in lahore has a massive campus coming.,
look at nust, another leading uni but it lacked the facilities, now look at there new u/c capus in isloo, its a massive city itself.

education is moving faster then any other industry in pakistan, and we are getting state of the art instituitions thanks to musharraf and his new found genius dr atta

Re: Austrian company pledges extra $150 million in gas exploration projects in Pakist

Absolutely spot on. Students from many parts of the world are also flocking to study at our colleges and universities.

Re: Austrian company pledges extra $150 million in gas exploration projects in Pakist

yep, even teachers/lecturers in top unis and now foreigners,
musharraf has taken this country a long way and hopefully the journey will continue.

Re: Austrian company pledges extra $150 million in gas exploration projects in Pakist

The Higher Education Commission (HEC) led by Dr Atta-ur-Rehman is one of the great achivements by Musharraf, applauded the world over.

Re: Austrian company pledges extra $150 million in gas exploration projects in Pakist

yep and the education system has been completly transformed.

Re: Austrian company pledges extra $150 million in gas exploration projects in Pakist

How so? Where can I find any evidence on this? Or do we just take you word for it?

Re: Education in Pakistan [split: Austrian company pledges extra $150 million]

^^ checkout www.hec.gov.pk

unis have gone from 20 to over a 100 now in last few years.

but but.... thats only happened in Higher Education sector because of one man efforts and full support from the government.

the basic education still need more attention, Punjab has taken a lead by providing free books and no fee in primary education. other provinces still need to follow this route to provide free education to all.

qaulity of basic education at public schools is very low and patchy

now that we have better higher education institutes, need to focus on grass root level.

Re: Education in Pakistan [split: Austrian company pledges extra $150 million]

so more unis from 99 to now than the rest of the years combined.
good start but a lot more needs to be done.

I am interested in reading about educational infrastructure proposals and plans of all parties PML (a-z), the former MMA components, PPP (and PPPP if it still exists), PTI, etc etc.

how many universities teaching what will be opened,
when and where
where are the techers coming from
how will the development and ongoing ops be funded
what steps are taken to keep talent in country

same for highschools, secondary schools, and elementary schools.

Re: Education in Pakistan [split: Austrian company pledges extra $150 million]

Yes indeed, very true.

Re: Education in Pakistan [split: Austrian company pledges extra $150 million]

the amount of scholarships has also increase by more then 100 times then it was in ns days.
with that we get a forieign faculty,

Re: Education in Pakistan [split: Austrian company pledges extra $150 million]

Well, one thing you guys are forgetting is that the best Universities in Pakistan were opened up long 'BEFORE' Musharraf. GIKi, NUST, LUMS, FAST, IBA were well before Musharrafs times. In case of GIKi, NUST, IBA they were doing much better before musharraf though Im not blaming him for their downfall, just pointing out how some people are painting a picture of 'musharraf gave birth to education in pakistan, and no one else has anything to offer'

As for these 50,000 colleges emerging now, none of them are really upto par with the ones I mentioned above. They are only there because its a lucrative business, open up a college, use your contacts in UGC to get it affiliated, and charge a hefty fee. You cant say it will take time for these univs to get onto the top, as GIKi in its infancy was ranked 4th best in Asia, NUST 20th, but downhill after that.

The only thing that this Govt did right, thanks to Atta was the HEC scholarships; though not completely utilized properly, it will prove be a great move.

Re: Austrian company pledges extra $150 million in gas exploration projects in Pakist

its actually the opposite

Re: Education in Pakistan [split: Austrian company pledges extra $150 million]

its actully the oppersite that has happened.

GIKI, NUST, LUMS, FAST, IBA were all only excellent pakistani standards, they were laughted at internationaly, today these unis have had major make overs, lums has been expanded, new buildings and state of the art facilities made, NUST was in a terrible state before mush came, their buildings were scattered all over the country, and now its also getting a huge shake up, look at its new campus, its a massive city itself, GIKI was also deterating day by day and was only alive due to the high profile nuclear scientist who went to study there and there work on the nuclear programe, the UN even banned companies in europe and usa in giving jobs to GIKI students, its was going down untill mush came along. well your right these unis existed before mush came, but it was now that they have been made to international standards.

no one is saying mush has given birth to pakistani education, but its not a hidden fact, he has taken education miles away from where it was before he came, and deserves the creadit for it.

as for saying the new ones arnt on par with the old ones, what you actully on, was that saracasm, i hope so. im sure you know it takes years for a uni to get itself established and build a name for itself, before it takes over the gikis and the lums.

and which ranking are you talking about, must be making it up or post the sources please, cause im sure no pak university was in the top 50 before 2000.
im sure it was lums to be the first uni from pak to break into the international rankings.

Re: Education in Pakistan [split: Austrian company pledges extra $150 million]

Are you for real? Asiaweek ranking GIK at 4th best, their graduates making it into microsoft etc at that time. Thats laughing?

Dude, I WENT TO NUST, and right after I got in, Musharraf took over, and coincidentally, NUST went down the drain right after that. GIKi also started having strikes etc right after that. What campuses are you referring to, if youre talking about the consitituent campuses like the EME etc, they were already there! The NEW nust campus will be be ARMY free, as thats where the problem lies, having incompetent army ppl in the faculty. Also, we were made to take an entrance exam, where top 50-100 students out of 50,000 or 60,000 who took the tests made, and there was a special quota for sons and daughters of army ppl, and then ofcourse the gentlement cadets, whose performance was totally based on their physical attributes.

[/quote]

BUDDY, it was AFTER 1999 that GIKI went down the drain. After that, they never made it back to where they used to be.

Nopes, Dr. Atta does. And his efforts still have to bear fruit, as most of the HEC ppl are abroad.

Do you know what year GIKi made it into the list top 20 Asia list, after its inception, and LUMS has been doing good since day one,

As for international standards, none of the Pakistani univs were in the top 200, in any reports. I was talking about Asiaweek's rankings on the best univs in Asia, and GIKi had the honor of being the 4th best. NUST was 20th in 1999 but after that it wasnt even in the top 50, and thats when I transferred out of it too.
