Eating halal food

I was raised to try all sorts of foods (just not pork of course).
but now i realize its better overall to eat halal food.
I tried looking for old threads that might answer my question but I couldn’t find anything pertaining to my query. It seems like the ones who eat halal were never tempted and look down on the ones that don’t, or teh ones who eat haram don’t care? It’s almsot embarrassing to even ask.

So after a lifetime of not limiting myself to what to eat, hwo do I get into the habit of eating halal/zabiha only?

If you are really serious then you should find halaal meat shop so you can cook

What a great question!

I am not sure if there will be an answer which will suit your mind but I will try.

The concept of halal is multifaceted.

There are many schools of thoughts unfortunately in Islam mainly due to many people interpreting things their own way. Not different from any other religion or religious people just to remind you. So please do not blame Muslims only for difference of opinions.

You might have come across the Quranic verses in this regard. For the reasons not really clear why pork has been considered not halal, kosher for not only muslims but also for jews. Orthodox jews will not eat Pork as far as I know. Don't know what a Jew person will think if that person grows in an orthodox family.

Anyhow, the concept of halal and zabiha is also important.

Since people who want to sell **non-zabiha meat **label the meat as halal and those who do not know the difference buy and eat that meat happily thinking they did the right thing.

Halal= Something not outrightly prohibited. Such as pork, lion or snake etc.
So it includes cow, goat, lamb, chicken, deer etc. Regradless how the animal was killed or died.

Zabiha= Halal animal killed in certain way. Letting the blood go out of the body is ONE essential part of it. Besides, no one other than Allah be announced while killing the animal.

There is controversy among people' opinion what if:

1-The animal is killed with blood being run out of body and NO ONE is pronounced when animal is killed.

As soon as it is thought that the animal is being sacrificed for anyone other than Allah..including so called Pir Baba/prophet SAW or whoever, the meat is not Zabiha and even will become absolutely Haraam in religious sense.

2- If animal is killed suddenly (Jhatka) or slowly by hand.

3- If animal is made unconcious by hitting a hammer on head before slitting throat.

4- If chickens really are dying with bleeding or from drowning when they are placed on a belt and they fall in to water before automatic cutter cut their throats. May happen rarely.

Regardless, one should read Quranic verses and read the explanations if still claims to be muslim then just comply with the rules.

Bottom Line:

Jab Pyaar Kia to Sochna Kia?:)

a very wrong and confused understanding of halal....

a cow/sheep not slaughtered properly is also haraam just as a pig is haraam....
it is only halal if slaughtered according to Islamic rites....

Get to know halal resturants, halal meal sellers, get in the habit of asking the person on the counter whats in this dish and how it was made (that is if there is no sign of HALAL anywhere in his shop)

Start slowly, just don't become a fundo right away, their is difference of opinion between different sect in Islam too. Some says chicken can be eaten in any form, other says not.

1) Look for Halal shops in your area

2) If shops are very far, then go their once a week.

3) eat eat.. halal meat make you fat ..:p

Explain to me sura maida verse 5 which gives an open license to eat the food of people of book.

  • 005.005 * YUSUFALI: This day are (all) things good and pure made lawful unto you. The food of the People of the Book is lawful unto you and yours is lawful unto them. (Lawful unto you in marriage) are (not only) chaste women who are believers, but chaste women among the People of the Book, revealed before your time,- when ye give them their due dowers, and desire chastity, not lewdness, nor secret intrigues if any one rejects faith, fruitless is his work, and in the Hereafter he will be in the ranks of those who have lost (all spiritual good). PICKTHAL: This day are (all) good things made lawful for you. The food of those who have received the Scripture is lawful for you, and your food is lawful for them. And so are the virtuous women of the believers and the virtuous women of those who received the Scripture before you (lawful for you) when ye give them their marriage portions and live with them in honour, not in fornication, nor taking them as secret concubines. Whoso denieth the faith, his work is vain and he will be among the losers in the Hereafter. SHAKIR: This day (all) the good things are allowed to you; and the food of those who have been given the Book is lawful for you and your food is lawful for them; and the chaste from among the believing women and the chaste from among those who have been given the Book before you (are lawful for you); when you have given them their dowries, taking (them) in marriage, not fornicating nor taking them for paramours in secret; and whoever denies faith, his work indeed is of no account, and in the hereafter he shall be one of the losers.

Do you buy meat fro m Christians and Jews who slaughter the animal according to their religion [pronouncing the name of one God]????

Re: Eating halal food

zabihah.com to get you started. The most comprehensive list of halal restaurants / stores i have seen on the net. Coveres pretty much the entire world wherever there are muslims.

Where does it imply or say in this verse that you have to make sure that they slaughter the animal according to their religion and pronounce the name of one God ?
In fact it does not mention slaughtered animal it gives an open license to eat from their food. Since eating pig is strictly and explicitly prohibited in other verses so I take that exception.
If they believed in one God then there will be no segregation between Muslims and People of the book . Will they be not classified as Muslims ?

Not in this ayah but in this "Surah Inam(121) Hence, eat not of that over which God's name has not been pronounced: for this would be sinful conduct indeed....."

pick n choose ayahs....hmmmm.

No, because after the Quran has come, muslims are those who believe in the Last Prophet(SAW), we still have Christians and Jews who believe in One God but they're called Unitarian Christians or Unitarian Jews.

Re: Eating halal food

malta it will be difficult in the begining, but you have to keep the understand that non-zabihah meat that you are about to eat is certainly not sloughtered the right way and perhaps animal suffered in that process. Do you really want to eat that meat. Personally i just feel completely unappetizing when I think of it. It is very easy to get Halal meat from grocery store to cook at home...but when you are outside it is definitely a challange to make a choice. I personnally do not think i have a choice to go and pick chicken or beef for myself...when you eliminate having a choice in ur mind, you won't get tempted.
Believe me it is very difficult sometimes when you are hungry and in freaking gora area where there is delicious meat dishes everwhere...it is a contant struggle but you get used to it

Re: Eating halal food

Start with small steps.

Limit yourself to only chicken and fish from outside places...cut out red meat entirely.

Then, you can cut back on the chicken as well and enjoy seafood.

I adoooooooooore seafood.

Re: Eating halal food

^ very good tip

Where does it say that if the name of God/Allah is not said at the slaughtering time then you cannot eat it. This verse is very binding. It forbids to eat anything again anything on which name of God/Allah has not been pronounced. So say the name of Allah on Halal and Tyyeb thing and eat it.

Not a pick and choose I am taking both of those verses. One which forbids pig and the other which allows me to eat from people of book's food which is halal and tyyeb .

Then who are People of Book ?

Re: Eating halal food

People of the book, I believe are, Muslims, Jews and Christians.

As for the thread starter, just read Bismillah over everything you eat!

I personally do not get what is wrong with eating vegetables or seafood if 'halal' meat is not available.

For how long?

I don't know. I guess its easier for me to say and think as I live in the U.K and have 'halal' meat readily available. I guess it may be more difficult for people who live in other Western countries.

I do not know.

Re: Eating halal food

If you're living in a place where there isnt any zabiha meat readily available, then thats another story but she is asking how to make a switch from regular meat to zabiha.

Just keep at it, eventually your own home cooked food starts to taste much better then any outside meat.

If you pay attention to what I and Hareem are discussing with the help of Quranic verses you will be able to decide on your own Inshallah , one way or the other.
On personal note I do not eat non zabiha but more I read Quran and more I learn Arabic vocabulary and grammar the more I am leaning toward eating McDonals , I have not started that yet.
This discussion is purely academic to resolves all the doubts in my mind.
