Eating Halal at Restaurants...what to eat?

I eat out a lot. This isnt going to change for me anytime soon. I am trying to eat just halal (Insha’Allah) and its quite difficult for me considering I eat out most of the time. I’ve done it before where I started eating just halal and then I went back to eating everything because I couldnt find good menu options. It was just fries or salad for me.

I’d like for everyone to share menu items from different restaurants that they eat, and this will give me and other people ideas for what to order when eating at these different places. You can also mention things that are quickly made or ready made at grocery store deli’s for example.

If you notice that some item I state doesnt have a halal ingredient (like lard for example), please let us know. Thanks.

I will start with the item that I eat most often, as a halal option.

Taco Bell - 7-layer burrito.

They also have bean burrito’s. I cant think of anything else they have that would be halal and fairly healthy.

Please add to this list, if you like. Thanks.

good topic Munni :k:

I always liked eating Vegetarian Subway…but it can still leave you hungry…try Garden Patty for vegetarian subway…it tastes good and can be very filling.

bean challupas (i bet thats spelt wrong)
bean border bowl
taco salad (beans)
fish sandwiches from all the fast food joints

At tacobell get the Mexican Pizza minus beef add rice. YUM!

  • Cheese & Veggie Pizza @ Pizza places
  • Shrimp fried rice or any vegetable dish at most Asian places
  • Veggie or Big Fish @ BK :D
  • Tuna or veggie burger at Subway, Quizno's, etc.
  • Fish n Fries @ Jack in the Box :D
  • Pakistani or Indian Halal places
  • 7-layer @ TacoBell

I dont eat fish, so that is one of my biggest issues, as I am sure it is for other guppies that dont eat fish either.

Even cheese pizzas are a problem, as they use the same knife to cut pizzas with pork on them to cut the cheese pizza's as well, there is pork laying everywhere around the kitchen and the cheese pizza in made in the same place. The guy uses the same hands with the same plastic gloves to touch the pork as well as the cheese that he puts on your cheese pizza. The use the same oven that 5 minutes ago was used to make a pork pizza and when the pork pizza cooked, parts of its grease sank out to other parts of the oven and then they put your cheese pizza on that same spot. We dont even know if the cheese or flour is halal either.

As for fish, most fish in restaurants is breaded fish and the bread may not be halal.. just food for thought

God help you in your cause.

Fish Fish and lots of FIsh :k:

fries.. aloo material…

cheese pizzas… vegi pizzas… vegi burgers… fish burgers…

ive got plenty of halal choices here newayzz

All sorts of pasta.
Plus, if you are worried about halal cheese, or halal bread etc, you can always go to a jewish restaurant. Jewish restaurants are much more organized in their quest for kosher products than most muslim restaurants. So just go to jewish restaurants, and choose from the vegetarian menu.

I dont eat pasta either. Now you can understand why halal option is so difficult for me. sigh

You mean jewish owned restaurants or ones that are in jewish neighborhoods? Or restaurants that say they offer kosher? I am going to have to do some sort of search for these.

no fish or pasta or whatnot?

stay at home or take a packed lunch?

Munni, I always go out of my way to eat Halal food, although at one time there were hardly any shops serving it. In the last 15 years the Muslim population over here has quadrupled hence many muslims have now entered the retail food sector with most take aways now serving Halal meat. We have Dallas Chicken, Favourite Chicken, Texas Chicken etc. We also have Nandos serving Halal Chicken in some of their outlets which is great. The Turkish community have also converted the chip shops into continental style kebab shops, the Bengalis and Pakistanis have opened up Indian restaurants serving Halal food.. there are also many Gujrati Vegetarian restaurants that have sprung up.. One is now spoilt for choice. :-) . I think in your case, what youre stating is that there are not many options available.. do you have any Chinese, Italian or Indian take aways.. if so do they have any vegetarian meals on offer?

As for receipies thats something fortunately Ive always left for my mum and sisters to sort out although in recent years I may of influenced the types of food we eat i.e we buy alot of fresh vegetables, desi ones as well as carrots, peppers, green beans, cauliflower, including mixed leaf salads . These are either steamed or boiled and not curried.. hehe.

Thanks for the contributions everyone. I appreciate it.

Thanks for bringing up the topic again Dil he. I had wanted to add something, or rather ask a question.

We have a Pakistani and Chinese halal nearby, but no chicken salad and other fast-food places around here. I’d have to drive far for that. smile

I had a question regarding this site, it mentions Taco Bell not having halal ingredients, if you scroll to the middle of the page you will start seeing restaurants listed. I am confused now cause I go to Taco Bell all the time. sigh I couldnt clearly decipher what it said regarding the bread. If anyone can, please get back to me thanks. Oh yeah, I am being nit-picky because I want to be. smile

Careful guys,

Taco Bell uses lard in the bean mix they put in their burritos,etc..

it s not healthy to eat out alot :)

Try to stop eating out that mutch, your vains will be slipped full in no times because of fast and unhealthy food :)

Munni, I hope you are not waiting for 10 more posts to tell us you don't eat cheese either, and 10 later, no rice too :P

By the way, the only thing I eat at Taco Bell is cheese quesadilla with green sauce. You have to eat two to really make a dent. But no, its definitely not the ideal staple for a diet-concious person.

Thanks GfQ, I will look into that. insha'Allah.

Prae, yeah, junk food is a big no no. smile

Faisal, hehe. Nahinnn, I eat mostly Pakistani food, but kabhi kabhar you want to eat other types of food. Dont get me started on stuff I dont eat, I can be horribly ungrateful at times. afsoos

Munni, what about dunkin doughnuts.. hehe ,I believe they dont use animal ingredients. Agreed with GfQ about tacos, seriously though, I think most restaurants ie Macs, Wendy's, Tacos, Pizza Hut, Pizza Express in the US, Canada and Europe use many non halal ingredients which may share the same oil or cooking utencils as the vegetarian items thus making the food haraam. Also consider what the staff do, ie touching bacon, ham etc before food preperation.

Anyway, question to you.. do you have a walmart nearby, if so do they have an oriental section? I think you should try out Malaysian/Thai recipies and see the types of foods that one can create that are halaal.

bhaiyon aap loge cheese kha letay hien yahan ki?
