Re: Earthquake in pakistan
The death toll in Pakistan from the earthquake has climbed to more than 18,000, a spokesman for Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf announced. CNN has not confirmed that figure. Pakistan is bearing the brunt of the 7.6 quake, which was centered 60 miles north-northeast of Islamabad. India, the disputed territory of Kashmir, and Afghanistan also suffered. Aftershocks continue to rattle the south Asian region.
Re: Earthquake in pakistan
This is getting really sad, 18K Pakistanis, this is the worst tragedy we have ever seen...
Re: Earthquake in pakistan
It’s better to shut up and do something about the tragedy rather than sit and make idiotic comments like the above. Donating some money to help out the Pakistanis would be a start. I hope and pray that the damage is as less as it can be.
Re: Earthquake in pakistan
Thoughts with the people of Pakistan especially those with family and friends in Kashmir.
Re: Earthquake in pakistan
Now 30,000 are reported killed in Azad Kashmir alone.
Thousands more have been killed in NWFP, and scores more killed in Islamabad and Punjab.
Re: Earthquake in pakistan
I am shocked by this tragedy and hope that all the guppies & their families are OK.
May God help the affected to overcome this disaster.
Earthquakes most important needs:MUSHARRAF'S CNN INTERVIEW
Musharraf on CNN specifically asked for:
Cargo planes(As all roads are washed off)
Helicopters
Tents
Blankets
Clothes
Medicines
He told that he has asked specific governments to provide with these....as most roads are washed off & there is no way to reach these places with people sitting out in open in cold & in danger of getting diseases....
Quake kills 400 schoolchildren
At least two schools in north-west Pakistan are known to have been destroyed by the powerful earthquake, killing at least 400 children.
Witnesses have spoken of seeing dozens of other schools flattened in villages across the mountainous region.
Schoolchildren would have been settling down to morning lessons when the quake hit at 0850 (0350GMT) on Saturday.
At least 18,000 people died in the 7.6-magnitude quake that hit Pakistan, India and Afghanistan.
The bodies of 400 children have been pulled from the rubble of at least two schools alone in Pakistan’s North West Frontier Province.
Police chief Riffat Pashar told Reuters news agency 350 altogether had died in the collapse of one school in Mansehra district.
“Fifty were killed in another school in the same district,” he said.
‘All gone’
Schools in the area around Balakot town have reported to have been particularly badly hit.
An AFP correspondent said all the schools in the surrounding villages had been either completely destroyed or very seriously damaged.
“We had three schools here, a primary school, a middle school and a girls’ school. They’re all gone,” soldier Mohammed Iqbal of Patangi village, some 7km (four miles) from Balakot, told the AFP news agency.
“Out of 190 children we were able to pull out only 40 alive. The rest are trapped and probably dead.”
Abdul Rashid, a government official in another nearby village, Shawal, told AFP: "Many children from our village went to Balakot and only one of them has come back. “We tried to look for them yesterday but there was no way we could get there because of the landslides. We couldn’t go on foot because of the falling boulders and aftershocks”.
