It happens. The world is really fast and sometime throwing yourself in running vehicle works. (chalti gaRi ki English sahi hai?)

Re: Duke University’s decision to sound Muslim call to prayer(azan every friday)

“Call for Friday afternoon prayer is during a broad day light when most people are awake. That’s all.”

If this is about numbers, then here is a counter argument -

Not everyone has a 9 to 5 job. Those who work odd hours, including night shift would be asleep at that time. I bet the number of affected folks sleeping at that time due to shift, illness, routine is at least 3 times the Muslim population in Duke University.

Okay guys… fun’s over…

Duke reverses decision to allow Muslim call to prayer - CNN.com

…Duke University has reversed its decision to allow a Muslim call to prayer to sound from a campus chapel bell tower, school officials announced Thursday.

Plans changed because the Durham, North Carolina, school’s effort to “unify was not having the intended effect,” Michael Schoenfeld, vice president for public affairs and government relations, said in a statement. …

Re: Duke University’s decision to sound Muslim call to prayer(azan every friday)

With these Muslim born haters of Islam, we don’t need any more enemies as they’re performing the job much more efficiently than the enemies. I still can’t believe the above comments are from Muslims. Quite a racist attitude towards their own faith. These people should not bother representing Islam as they’re surely causing more harm than good.

Im quite sad to know that the uni had to retract the decision.

if anything, listening to azaan / quranic recitation only brings blessings upon people, not harm. So the haters should be ashamed of themselves.

Re: Duke University’s decision to sound Muslim call to prayer(azan every friday)

Also, the article says “moderately amplified”. It would not be annoying for those who dont understand as I think people would have to pay attention to understand the words of adhan.

edit: just checked kakaballi’s post.

Re: Duke University’s decision to sound Muslim call to prayer(azan every friday)

Well said.
Actually they have fear that it will affect them as they are muslims and will be considered bigot or extremest by the natives, if adhan is recited.

Re: Duke University’s decision to sound Muslim call to prayer(azan every friday)

I was for it; but I’m not upset about retracting the decision either.

Re: Duke University’s decision to sound Muslim call to prayer(azan every friday)

nothing but the truth.

Re: Duke University’s decision to sound Muslim call to prayer(azan every friday)

What’s with the accusations of self hating? Why should we have the Azaan ringing at a university where only a small minority are Muslims. I’m not talking about minority like Muslims in India. I’m talking about like a total of 20-50 kids who are even PRACTICING Muslims of which only a fraction would even be on campus to hear the call for prayer. Some might be working in labs , in class, etc and will not hear it.

Vast overwhelming majority are non Muslims.

We did this on our college campus but once a year more for educational purposes than anything else and I remember one year students were harassed for it. There were two or three kids who tried to make the Friday prayer an every Friday thing and most of us didn’t support it since there were a total of 50 muslim kids on campus and maybe 20 actually even prayed or admitted they were muslim. We had a huge number of Arabs and Turkish who didn’t participate in our religious student group to the point they pointe blank asked us not to contact them for events (post-911). So what’s the point of sounding the azaan every week other than to impose your religion on others?

Not wanting to impose religion in exchange for not having religion imposed on us, is fair. It’s not self hating. Even the religion tells us that we should follow the laws of the land out of respect if we do not live in a muslim majority country.

You are calling those of us self hating Muslims meanwhile we pray give charity etc. don’t you think its a grave sin for YOU to judge how muslim the rest of us are?

Re: Duke University’s decision to sound Muslim call to prayer(azan every friday)

Speaking of “law of the land”, unless you’re saying that the uni’s decision was against the American laws, I don’t see why all the Muslim borns here were so despised by the decision of a weekly juma azaan.

the hateful comments about a weekly call for muslim prayer still don’t make sense to me. What’s so evil about listening to the prayer call? I always stopped doing what I was doing and listened to the azaan with complete focus even when I didn’t pray. Still I don’t pray regularly but listening to the azaan doesn’t hurt me but feels good. Maybe some Muslim students at the university can tell better why the university’s decision was so bad that they had to retract it.

Re: Duke University’s decision to sound Muslim call to prayer(azan every friday)

It is probably attitudes like this that provide fodder to the satirists. Use of hateful, evil, racist and similar terms when totally unwarranted.

Re: Duke University’s decision to sound Muslim call to prayer(azan every friday)

“Totally unwarranted”?

hello sir, you may wanna go back to read all the comments by Muslim posters in this thread that reek of all those emotions I mentioned in my post instead of accusing me of bad attitude. Thank you.

Re: Duke University’s decision to sound Muslim call to prayer(azan every friday)

I read most of the posts in this thread. Sorry. Totally unwarranted

Re: Duke University’s decision to sound Muslim call to prayer(azan every friday)

If you have really read all the posts and still saying this, then it’s clear that your allegation on me is totally unwarranted as anyone who really wants to see (after reading other posts) where I’m coming from, it’s not hard for them to see.

Re: Duke University’s decision to sound Muslim call to prayer(azan every friday)

.

Re: Duke University’s decision to sound Muslim call to prayer(azan every friday)

Old news. Some nonmuslims Islam haters referred the relevant authorities to the comments of the Muslim born in this thread after which they retracted it.

Re: Duke University’s decision to sound Muslim call to prayer(azan every friday)

I can’t believe I am agreeing with you. Yes, this is exactly how I feel about it. I don’t see what the issue is. The college kids probably won’t think beyond the fact that it’s just a call to prayer in another language. Unless you tell them it is of diabolical nature, they won’t think anything of it. Stop spreading hate! It’s this type of thinking that makes simpler things in life difficult.

Re: Duke University’s decision to sound Muslim call to prayer(azan every friday)

They reversed the decision after calls from people like Frank Graham etc. These guys who are opposed to these things are really myopic. If they truly want to fight extremism, they will need moderate Muslims on their side. They will never win it without their help. By opposing every thing that moderate Muslims do as way of assimilation, they are being short-sighted and stupid. Like it or not, Islam is here to stay in the US. No matter how much they oppose mosques or schools, it is not going to go away. The only way forward is to empower the moderates counter the extremist ideology not by being extreme themselves.

Re: Duke University’s decision to sound Muslim call to prayer(azan every friday)

I don’t hear church bells every week. I don’t have rabbis putting their sermons on my radio and disrupting my music play every week. So why is it a I for the azaan to be read to nonmuslims?
