Actually it is the Muslim students who campaigned for this. Why would the University randomly decide on its own that the azaan needs to be said out loud before Friday prayers? That would be really absurd.
And you keep emphasizing that it’s a bad decision because it’s the US? I firmly believe and know that the US as a whole is a lot less racist than all of Europe when it comes to Muslims so it would be a bad decision in Europe as well.
Anyways the latest news is that Duke has retracted its decision because they realized instead of fostering goodwill it was actually causing harm.
Re: Duke University’s decision to sound Muslim call to prayer(azan every friday)
In an environment where many school districts in the US are opting to call the Dec school break as winter break instead of Christmas break due to the religious connotation, this seems like a very ill conceived idea.
Re: Duke University’s decision to sound Muslim call to prayer(azan every friday)
Muslims Student Association of the Duke University, not the entire Muslim community of this world or Western countries as some people would like to paint. The knee jerk reaction of Muslims to put the blame on all Muslims’ and start the wrist slitting is just as bad as Islamophobic gits passing negative generalisation on all Muslims and holding the entire community responsible. Simple opportunism. It is about time moderate Muslims start saying NO to both form external and internalised racism.
Mainland Europe is just as racist as USA, it’s just that European Muslim think USA is still more racist whereas USA Muslims try to make themselves feel better by saying no it’s Europe that’s more racist. These are typical responses. But yes, but classroom shootings is more of American problem.
I want to add to my argument that if it’s not a proper mosque with an established imam and regular 5 times prayer setup, then performing even Friday prayers is not an obligation (perform 4 rakat zuhr, instead of 2 rakat Friday), let alone giving azan for that prayers
Re: Duke University’s decision to sound Muslim call to prayer(azan every friday)
haha
i’d say Europe with all its colonial era hang ups is a couple of orders of magnitude more racist than any of north america. but that is another topic. americans are ignorant more than willfully hateful in comparison.
Re: Duke University’s decision to sound Muslim call to prayer(azan every friday)
not really. even your fairytale disneyland switzerland is blatantly anti-immigrant, most of it very thinly veiled and directed at muslims. muslims in north america arent ghettoized like they are in europe. there is no comparison.
Re: Duke University’s decision to sound Muslim call to prayer(azan every friday)
Haha Switzerland, lol. I don’t know if Bollywood portrays Switzerland as fairytale Disneyland, but it’s hardly the country that claims to be the land of immigrants, land of freedom or mega industrial nation of dreams. It is not like USA’s immigration laws, airport profiling and extensive hours long security check ups are oh so Muslim friendly. I fail to see the point. Did I say that there is no such thing as Islamophobia in Europe. It is implicitly rigid and it is racist in many ways.
Yes, a ghettosized community stands out like a sore thumb because it becomes a class issue, and class divides complicates things further. This links back to the kind of first and second wave of Muslim immigration that went over to these these country. But anyway, they face Islamophobia and easy targets. Same as Muslim community of USA, so much for being so assimilated, they are confronted with same level of suspicion and stigmatisation, and fear of attack. I just recently found out that my 18 year American cousins and most Pakistani kids in his school actually don’t call themselves Pakistani because they fear rejection, ridicule and possible racism. I was surprised to hear that, but necessarily shocked.
Re: Duke University’s decision to sound Muslim call to prayer(azan every friday)
i’d be really surprised if your cousins are hiding their identity out of fear in school - probably just ashamed of being brown, spoilt brats. but i’d let pakistani guppies from north america chime in. no one hides their roots in the US. not like mama yuropa where you have to take tests and learn languages just to be let in.
sure forget switzerland - my bad for thinking it is some idyllic parochial paradise where everyone is welcome. what about the rest of lovely europe? where do these prophet cartoons keep coming from over and over? if the US is so islamophobic, why is it denmark, france, italy, holland etc doing all the dirty tricks and baiting muslims far better than any dimwit on faux news can dream of? where is the hijab ban at? texas or france?
Re: Duke University’s decision to sound Muslim call to prayer(azan every friday)
There is an Islamophobia…just more in some parts of the world than others…but it’s there nonetheless. What’s the point of competing as to which part of the world has it worse…phailta jaa raha hai.
Re: Duke University’s decision to sound Muslim call to prayer(azan every friday)
Well if they are calling themselves Indian then it clearly shows that that browness isn’t an issue. You hear far too often about Pakistani calling themselves Indian in USA or facing racist attacks for being confused as Arabs. Of course, that’s by no means a generalisation, so yes I am sure there will be dozens of “I am a born and bred American and no I have never ever in my life heard Pakistani disguising themselves as Indian” lines. That’s fine, I’m more than happy to hear that.
No Europe is not lovely, don’t get carried away. You somehow think I called mainland Europe some heaven on earth for Muslims or less Islamophobic than USA (at most I called it just as). If you’re saying Europe is Islamophobic - it is indeed, and whatever you are saying about France, Holland or Germany holds absolutely true. I can’t be arsed to dispute any of that. In fact I want people to acknowledge that, and talk about it and openly condemn.
Re: Duke University’s decision to sound Muslim call to prayer(azan every friday)
I agree with queer..I’m born and raised (Texas!) in the good 'ol South, all my schooling has been here, as that of 25 or so first cousins that came after me, and now my kids..I am one of the advisors for our Masjd youth group, am surrounded by high school aged to college kids on a continual basis and I’ve never heard of anyone denying themselves as Pakistani in school do to fear of rejection or racism, I’m sorry but that sounds more like a personal issue/problem then the norm. You’ll find isolated incidents everywhere, but is now way a widespread problem.
Yes, Islamaphobia is on the rise, but Generation Y & Millenials have an unprecedented amount of support and pride in their heritage and religion, it wasn’t like that when I was growing up, that’s for sure.
Re: Duke University’s decision to sound Muslim call to prayer(azan every friday)
well Jolie, if you acknowlegde and want Islamophobia in Europe condemned, why dilute it by including US with it? condemn it for what it is without working on other agendas and insecurities.
Re: Duke University’s decision to sound Muslim call to prayer(azan every friday)
Well it is nice that you actually acknowledged that Europe is Islamophobic, you somehow assumed that I think it’s not, lol. Had I opened I thread calling Europe Islamophobic and trollish, I reckon you or others would’ve tried so hard to prove how it is not, and I’m just being a defensive Muslim playing the blame game. Good thing I mentioned USA in the same breath.
Oh dear, I said said something bad about America, oh no, I must have an ‘agenda’, how anyone possibly say anything remotely agaimst USA, right? LOL The only person who got on the extreme defensive footing is you, curb your insecurities and don’t go for silly baiting that just because someone called big mighty USA Islamophobic therefore it means the whole of Europe must be a fairytale disneyland, paradise, lovely dreamworld. Talk about insecurities.
Americans aren’t the only people who go around calling racism isolated incidents or less racist than any other country. Plenty of Europeans do that too. You’d be surprised how many French Muslims think France is actually better than many other Western nations and so very tolerant. Very rarely do normal people call the country they’re living the worst thing on the planet. I say normal because I’m excluding the extremists.
Re: Duke University’s decision to sound Muslim call to prayer(azan every friday)
I know it is not exactly the same as the topic of this thread is but enough to put further shame on ‘fear mongers’ against Muslims and Islam in west/USA/NA, including those who ‘pretend’ to be Muslims.
Worrying about ‘Islamophobes’ should not make anyone oppose Azaan, especially in this context!
