I'd still say Dubai is good for holidays as long as you have lots of money to spend, but to live there - no way in hell. It's way too artificial and materialistic.

I have lived in Dxb for some 30 years. The life is artificial and temporary. And as cat-woman says a lot of money is required for decent living.
I still have very strong ties in Dxb and go there very frequently, infact right now my wife and girls are in Dxb for winter vacation. The thing which apeals me is if you don't bother anyone nobody is going to bother you. My wife can even drive late in the night anywhere she wants without a worry. It is very women orientated society, a single complaint from a woman can put you tremendous trouble with police.
Human right voilations as far as the labor industry goes are exploited very widely.

I don't know how Pakistanis put up with Arabs and their treatments toward Pakistanis.
One day inshallah, Pakistan will invade all Arab lands and arab men will be taxi drivers and chauffers for Pakistanis.

That's why we're moving back..
Too much traffic, it takes 1.5-2 hrs for my hubby to reach his office in the morning.. The travel time without traffic is not more than 11 minutes.

Yes it is materialistic and yes it is very artificial. No place in the world is perfect.
What I do like about "New Dubai" (that's how they call the part of Dubai that I live in) is the fact that it is very multicultural, it is becoming greener and greener (although these green areas are man-made) and that the people here are very open.
However I know that the situation is very different in Downtown Dubai.

I agree Dubai is for Riches to spend money,But hey don't blame Arabs they deserve to drag money out of westerner's pocket,as they have already spent a lot of money on what Dubai is today.

There is one way in which Dubai should be celebrated. Although their wealth may have been initially from oil, they have grown a viable economy beyond oil. Tourism, banking, construction, airlines, and yes shopping are all economic alternatives beyond spending oil wealth. Every other Gulf State would collapse today if they could no longer pump oil.
Yes labor abuses should be curbed, but this is the one Muslim country that has shown ingenuity beyond petrodollars, and is competitive on the world stage for something other than linens and textiles, and simple manufacturing.

Truth is, I secretly love visiting Dubai. :o My last holiday however left me with a bruised butt, as I fell off one of those ARVs - I went flying in one direction, and luckily the damn thing didnt land on top of me.
The next time I go I want to be loaded, so I can just go crazy in City Centre. lol

OG dubai is a model in many ways, most ways I would say but there is a dark underbelly that needs to be dealt with ..the exploitation of labour is one, and the whole deal with the kidnapped children to serve as jockeys is another, plight of domestic workers is a third..there are others of course, every society has its weaknesses that do not take anything from its successes, but they are still troubling and need to be addressed

actually not so, OG has in past praised the positive approaches in Indonesia, the passive nature of Indian muslims, the heroic stance of Pakistan against terrorists as well. U just have to find it.
