dubai- all that its cracked up to be?

Re: dubai- all that its cracked up to be?

ok! so is he an american e.g. a gora american?

i thought he was a pakistani at first, but then it kinda seemed like he wasnt because he never joined in the other topics or spoke urdu. also his political stance...

Re: dubai- all that its cracked up to be?

Fraudia ji, they are trying to sort out these issues. For example this kidnapping cases are almost finished because they no longer allow any child on mother's passport anymore, when you have a seperate passport there is accountability. Also legally the set age for camel jockeys is 18 years. Slowly but surely they are moving in the right direction.

The man behind a £450m bid for Liverpool FC has been accused of participating in the enslavement of children forced to work as camel-racing jockeys in the Middle East. Dubai’s ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum - whose Dubai International Corporation is currently negotiating to buy the popular English football club - was among ‘the most active participants’ in the slave trade for camel racing, according to a lawsuit filed in the United States.

Dubai’s royal family deny the US allegations, saying they have banned child jockeys and overhauled the sport, which is popular in the United Arab Emirates.

The lawsuit - a class action filed in Miami by six unidentified parents of children allegedly caught up in the nefarious trade - accuses the sheikh, his brother Hamdan and 500 others of involvement in trafficking boys aged as young as two from south Asia and Africa.
It is alleged the boys - highly prized because of their physical lightness - were abducted, kept in poor conditions and forced to work in a dangerous sport. The lawsuit claims thousands of children may have been victimised over three decades in ‘one of the greatest humanitarian crimes of the past 50 years’.
The suit claims the Dubai royals, who have global racing interests, were especially complicit: ‘as makers of the de facto rules of the sport, as hosts of the camel races, and with the knowledge that the source of child camel jockeys was the slave trade … [they] caused the enslavement of boys by other sheikhs [and] conspired with them to enslave boys.’
A spokesman for the Maktoums said they were ‘disappointed’ by the suit, which took no account ‘of all the work that has been done in the UAE to clean this issue and deal with the problem’.
Following pressure from international charities, child camel jockeys were banned in the UAE in 2002, although rigorous enforcement of the law is relatively recent. However, a United Nations report last month acknowledged significant progress in curbing the practice in the UAE and repatriating victims.
The suit has been filed in Miami because the family owns a stud farm there. John Eubanks, the plaintiffs’ lawyer, said: ‘The relevant UK authorities should be aware that these serious allegations are outstanding when they consider the Liverpool FC purchase.’ MPs reacted cautiously to the allegations. Peter Kilfoyle, whose constituency includes Liverpool’s Anfield stadium, called the claims ‘worrying’ but said he would ‘wait for the case to unfold’.

It isn’t just labiurers who are mistreated by the UAE.

Re: dubai- all that its cracked up to be?

I just wanted to let everyone know that the kid traffiking is subsiding pretty quickly because of this ingenius device tha one person has built)forgot his name)..but that has taken the place of the human jockeys with this remote controled robot kinda thing.I saw the whole feature on the news...its pretty simple and works by a remote controlled key chain...sure saves a lotta kids:)

Re: dubai- all that its cracked up to be?

yep, kid traffiking for jockey roles is allegedly going to decrease.

Re: dubai- all that its cracked up to be?

yep but the kids who were brought into teh country before were brought in somehow as well. the legally set age was also there but it was never followed.
and this is trafficking in just one area. UAE is a big destination in terms of human traficking for prostitution as well.

no doubt they are moving in the right direction partially because of more enlightenment in the poers that be and partially because it is a must, to be a player in global economy as they are setting themselves up to be, they need to clean up their act a bit and atleast try to enforce laws that discourage this stuff.

Re: dubai- all that its cracked up to be?

Re: dubai- all that its cracked up to be?

Actually Dubai is one place I seriously consider many times, to move. Biggest attractions are that its close to Pakistan (big big deal for me) as well as very well developed, muslim (however you define it), multi-cultural and fantastic job opportunities (at least in my field). Biggest problems arethat its full of Arabs, practically no long-term potential (kids' higher education, owning property etc) and extremely humid weather.

Re: dubai- all that its cracked up to be?

hey hey hey hey, good to see u back, how goes it

for me that is pretty much the only real option if I go to middle east...maaaaybe bahrain, but that is it.

whats the deal with owning property, from what I understand u can own property, my cuz just bought some condo there.

Re: dubai- all that its cracked up to be?

Well, I do live in Florida, so my bald head is somewhat exposed. I can assure you that the covered areas remain white as the pure driven snow. Shall I send you some pics to confirm this? Hmmmm?

Re: A Pakistani laments Dubai

The exploitation, the sufferings, the discrimination of laborers esp based on their ethnicity is all well known in Arab states, having lived in Saudi Arabia for almost 10 years this is not a surprise to me. The only reason people opt to live in such conditions is when they don't find similar growth in their own country.

Re: dubai- all that its cracked up to be?

hahahah no believe me I am more than happy to take your word for it :)
