i dont think its about being strict, its about values, and if you live those values yourself they become a part of life.
There were many things i hated when i was growing up, and personally i think if my parents had actually sat down and discussed why we had to do this or wear that, rather than "just do it" it would have been a easier transition, as an adult i appreciate my parents parenting skills and would do more or exactly the same with my children.
