Dropbox users tell me!

Dropbox users tell me your personal experience with dropbox.
Is it safe to save your family pics there?
I am also looking forward to response from tofi baba who allegedly introduced lot of gs members to dropbox
Please forgive my ignorance:(

Re: Dropbox users tell me!

I only save my assignments and few other documents on Dropbox, never saved pictures.

Any picture which is posted on the www runs the risk of being “stolen”.
If you don’t want to run the risk ,don’t post anything anywhere on the www. :k:

Thank you lippy :hat:

Re: Dropbox users tell me!

If your documents are very secure than zip them up with a password and then upload them . For advance users they have AES-256 already in place to encrypt and store files .

Re: Dropbox users tell me!

How is Google drive as compared to drop box? Ever used it?

Re: Dropbox users tell me!

been using Dropbox since 2008... never had any issues.
Just manage the access to your online folders diligently - oh and contrary to popular belief, your files aren't on "the web"... they're in "the cloud" but only accessible to you or whomever you explicitly share with... unless you put files in the public folder - then you can share URLs to those files if you like.

Security-wise, it's pretty good: they use SSL for file transfers and AES-256 bit encryption for storage. Besides, on the backend, they use Amazon's Simple Storage Service (S3) for storage which has an additional layer of security.

So one can use dropbox for saving personal pics and data?

Re: Dropbox users tell me!

I'd say "absolutely!" - just make sure you're not putting it in your "Public" folder or inadvertently granting access to someone who you don't want to share the pics with.

Re: Dropbox users tell me!

Even in public folder it can only be accessed if one has the link correct?

Re: Dropbox users tell me!

I am waiting for Tofi’s reply here because he loves Dropbox. :hehe:

Re: Dropbox users tell me!

who doesn’t ?! it’s the best thing since sliced bread  - I don’t even use USB flash drives any more.

Re: Dropbox users tell me!

my uni n college had it so it must be good.

Re: Dropbox users tell me!

WHy would anyone want to access your Dropbox? Make friends not enemies :snooty:!

Re: Dropbox users tell me!

I do use it but I hardly put any confidential information up there . But may be if I'll have to then I'll just encrypt it using PGP with my own key and then will put it up there .

You can't trust them you know .

Re: Dropbox users tell me!

LC has been using this much before I put my trust on Dropbox. I put all my client folders there. My pictures taken from my phone automatically get uploaded to DB, and tons of other stuff that I always need access to all go to DB.

I use different laptops depending on what I'd need for the day and I never have to worry about if my needed docs are with me when I leave home. They are always in sync. The sync between your computer and the cloud is encrypted, its not available (so no www access till I login to my account) to anyone else. I do have some files that I still want to be inaccessible even if somebody had my Dropbox username and password. For that I use TrueCrypt (let me know if you're interested in that and I'll explain further).

Another great feature of Dropbox is that you can share folders with other DB users. For instance I'll specifically share a folder with you, you would accept and then whatever you put in that folder would automatically sync with my computer and vice versa. I have family around the globe that I share pictures and other documents with and i don't have to use an open ftp/www folder.

Hope this helps :)

Re: Dropbox users tell me!

yes please explain more about TrueCrypt

Re: Dropbox users tell me!

I thought I was paranoid but you guys are worse. :p I use dropbox to share pictures never thought of encrypting anything.

Re: Dropbox users tell me!

Dropbox, I need to use it more…

Great, you are taking full advantage of it. :k: What is TrueCrypt?

Re: Dropbox users tell me!

TrueCrypt is this opensource encryption software that lets you create password protected volumes. This software is platform independant so it works for Windows, Macs and Linux (TrueCrypt - Free Open-Source On-The-Fly Disk Encryption Software for Windows 7/Vista/XP, Mac OS X and Linux).

Once you create a new volume using TC it generates a file of the size you specity. For instance you tell TC to create a 100MB file called C:\Dropbox\LIPPY.TC. It goes thru its encryption process with the passwords you specify, it then lets you mount this volume to a drive letter (lets use L:). You can now save all your sensitive documents in the L: drive (upto 100 mb) and then you dismount it.

As soon as you dismount, the file is picked up by Dropbox and only the section you changed is sync’d up to the cloud, not the whole 100MB. It then sync’s this file down to your Macbook and you can then mount that volume on that computer using your password and get access to all the hidden, sensitive files in there.

With TrueCrypt you can either get virtual volumes (in files) or you can lock down whole physical drives. You can even make the drives invisible so people won’t even see it anywhere, much less try to crack it. Lots of features that I haven’t played around with. We can start up another thread on this item and other encryption software if you’re interested. But that was the skinny on TrueCrypt.
Enjoy!

Re: Dropbox users tell me!

Dropbox, Gdrive and Box for me....I use three.

Hey you never when you might lose something!
I upload all sorts there. Music, pictures, android applications, ebooks, important documents I may need...and the list goes on!
