US drone attack kills 80 in North Waziristan
US drone fired four missiles into a suspected hideout of militants on Thursday, killing 80 of them.
The strikes took place in the Datta Khel area of the North Waziristan tribal region, the main sanctuary for Al-Qaeda and Taliban fighters along the Afghan border.
The roughly more than 100 suspected militants at the meeting were allied with Hafiz Gul Bahadur, a powerful Pakistani Taliban commander in the area who has focused his efforts on fighting foreign troops in Afghanistan. The insurgents were discussing plans to send new groups of fighters across the border.
The most senior militant killed in the attack was Sharabat Khan, Bahadur s top commander for the Datta Khel area, who was leading the meeting. Several foreign militants were also killed in the attack.
The United States began firing missiles at militant targets in Pakistan in 2004, but the pace of the attacks picked up dramatically in 2008. Last year, there were around 120 strikes, which are believed to be carried out by unmanned drone aircraft launched either from Afghanistan or from inside Pakistan.
There have been around 20 so far this year. Most of the strikes this year and last have been in North Waziristan.
good hit :D the governor kP is saying that the americans have hit a tribal jirga and khasadars
relatives of those 80 people should demand blood money ( 20 crore per head) and american passports.
if drone strikes continues then soon american will have no money and a lot of pakthuns in florida.
ISLAMABAD: A provincial governor in Pakistan’s northwest on Thursday accused the United States of killing civilians and police officers in a drone strike in the troubled tribal region, a statement said.
“I strongly condemn this drone attack. A tribal jirga (council) was targeted in which several tribal elders and tribal policemen were martyred,”said Syed Masood Kausar, the federal representative of northwestern Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province.
“We want to make it clear that the government of Pakistan and its people will not tolerate such attacks. These attacks are against the sovereignty of Pakistan,” the statement added.
Hafiz Gul Bahadur is a leader of a TTP faction. Good riddance if its his crew thats been targeted.
Like I said before, there needs to be more clarity from the government. Is it a tribal jirga or is it the well known TTP commander like Dunya tv reports?
i dont think we need any clarifications, as long as it is a drone attack that means terrorists are killed, the drones are intelligent enough to differentiate between terrorists and innocents
This is an unusual case where the victims have been named by the pakistani media. The government should clarify whether these were not the people killed, and if they were, why they are characterizing them as tribal elders instead of terrorists.
ok what will happen if there are innocents in them? no one has given a list of the previous drone attacks as well as to how many terrorists and how many innocents were killed? there are no stats what so ever, so these dead people will also not make a difference!
What are innocents doing at a meeting of terrorists? I agree that in general, the government needs to provide much more support to innocent victims of this bloodshed. Part of this has to do with this ridiculous policy of denial and condemnation even though there is tacit approval/collaboration with the attacks. They should openly support drone attacks, transparently provide the public with info on how they are conducted and how to avoid getting caught in the crossfire, and they should make the pak army/us army pay through the nose for any innocents killed.
the pakistani army and isi is solely responsible for the confusion regarding the drone attacks, if they consider them important for our national security they should own them publicly, but their hypocritical kind of behavior creates doubts in the mind of the people about its utility and is dividing the people in general which is not good for the country

Actually the targets for drones are identified by ISI. Attacks are as good as intelligence they get.

The Pak Army doesnt issue a lot of statements on this. The politicians are the ones who do.
What the army does need to do is restrain the ghairat brigade that part of it does control.

i agree with you the confusion is due to non transparency of this campaign there is no statistics as to how many people have been killed and how many were innocents amongst them. us army ko bhool jayan unsay kuch nahin milna, aur hamari army tou waisay hi faqeer hay!
