Re: Drivers of environmental pollution
Isn’t that like asking… What’s more likely to cause Cancer, Smoking or Religion?
Re: Drivers of environmental pollution
Props to OP for discussing environmental issues. Nice job. And Godspeed.
Re: Drivers of environmental pollution
Drivers - coincidentally they r a big reason. Speeding towards a red, Jack rabbit starts, going 70 plus mph idling. Nice play on words OP
Re: Drivers of environmental pollution
Back on topic. Let me try to answer. I will have to make certain assumptions re what u mean by religious dogma.
Answer - both cause damage. Unbridled capitalism without enough regulations can be harmful. And as stated earlier religion doesn’t harm environment. But people who follow religion may not understand it fully. Hence they may pay more attention to rituals (pooja for example) and less to their universal civic duty - if that phrase makes sense. Here is an example of religious dogmas harmful effect on environment
what is your opinion? And what are your proposed solutions.
Thanks again for the invitation to this thread. Look forward to your kind response.
Re: Drivers of environmental pollution
OP. Now that we are teaming together in this common cause , allow me to share today’s random experience which is more the norm.
Went for grocery shopping. A monster pick up was idling. Windows closed. AC on. Guy was waiting outside while his family member was shopping inside.
At the grocery store everyone at the counter was using plastic. Inside store folks used fresh plastic for veggies. Which they can easily reuse by bringing g from home.
Now what do we see at the parking lot. A lady driver with her daughter in back seat. Car idling. And lady was on phone. Did she have to start the car and then be on phone? Couldn’t she finish call and THEN start?
OP. This is becoming par for the course. I am grateful u invited me to this thread. I feel so good I can share my pain . We are in it together, right?
Re: Drivers of environmental pollution
OP. just came back from picking weeds. From grass and from portions where folks put small black stones to prevent weed growth. I look around neighbors yard. Man they are spotless clean. Guess what. They use roundup LIBERAL ly - no pun intended. Ok this has little to do with climate change. But OP, this pollutes aquifers. Makes me mad OP. But I can lean on you now, man.
And one more thing - what’s with people using blowers to blow dust from one place to another? What happened to plain old broom?
Re: Drivers of environmental pollution
Coming to option 1 - Capitalism. Please visit this website hosted by the one and only Bill Moyers, one of the nicest gentlemen you will ever listen to.
This week he interviewed Paul Krug man , the liberal tiger among Economists. Krug man talked about Thomas Pickety’s book Capital - in the 21st century.
Krug man spoke abt the inequalities between the top 1 pct and the rest. The book states by 2030 us will be an oligarchy. Families would control wealth. Why? They pay an effectively lower tax rate at federal state and local level compared to rest. COSMOS of top 320 companies earn avg of 11.7M $ compared to median income of 35239$ in their companies.
Re: Drivers of environmental pollution
Adelson the billionaire who funds rich politicians from the Right got 8 billion dollars in estate tax break. There is a level of harshness in the rhetoric that comes from the top 1 pct that has been unseen.
The rate of capital increase is 4 to 5 pct..Compared to 2 to 3 pct for general economy.
You will agree with me here OP that this is not sustainable.
Got to give credit where it’s due. To OP. For raising this very important issue. Please give ur feedback after viewing this legendary lions website. Click on video of Paul Krug man interview.
Feels good to have a conversation. Been too lonely in them badness threads man. Too damn lonely.
Re: Drivers of environmental pollution
Technically its Western Capitalism, as the Environmental footprint is the largest in the West and not the rest of the world.
Re: Drivers of environmental pollution
^ Very true. I think a sizable pct (greater than 30%?) of the members here reside in the west. And so benefit from it. Probably that’s what OP was hinting at.
OP , watched Cosmos yesterday. Leaded gasoline was being promoted as containing no side effects. With a bought and paid for consultant. Bit off topic. But posted this to show how unregulated capitalism can be damaging. Did you watch the show? I missed last 10 min. Dozed off.
Re: Drivers of environmental pollution
capitalism…most damage to the environment is done in Pakistan as a result of waste by factories and the sewerage being diverted towards canals/rivers
Re: Drivers of environmental pollution
Ali isn’t it caused by lack of regulations? It’s not capitalism that’s the problem. But unregulated capitalism IMHO.
Re: Drivers of environmental pollution
Regulate Capitalism…and then you get communism… oxymorons
Re: Drivers of environmental pollution
Can you explain? So are you against
So what r u for? Bit confused.
Re: Drivers of environmental pollution
just saying… the ‘spirit’ of capitalism lies in the unregulated free markets. No intervention.
This very spirit is what causes environmental damage to further increase net ‘wealth’ of the market participants.
