Re: Drinking Alcohol
Not a total dealbreaker for me..
I once went out with Turkish guy and he was a social drinker (it's normal in their culture just as certain haram things are normal and accepted in Pak culture)..
I was never pressured to drink and it didn't really affect me in any way so I didn't see it as a huge deal..
My own parents don't touch alcohol but a few of my extended family do drink socially..
Re: Drinking Alcohol
Not a total deal breaker. Given the person has other redeeming qualities.

what other redeeming qualities would make up for it?

How are you so open minded and tolerant to this flaw? Would the person need to have many redeeming qualities to make up for this flaw?
Re: Drinking Alcohol
Alcohol would be a simple no. Made my hubby quit smoking before we got married. Made it clear that my deadline was before the wedding took place. Didn't want to take the chance of giving him quitting options till after the wedding. My dad was a smoker (for 30+ years) and I had always seen him struggle to quit and go back. I know how difficult it is, and it was a big deal for me if he continued to smoke after marriage. Alhumdulillah he did quit (but also because he had always wanted to and needed motivation).

I'm not sure really. I just wouldn't reject it right away. I would look at what else is being brought to the table.
I wouldn't consider a smoker though, deal breaker for sure. And recreational drugs ( the illegal ones ) are an obvious deal breaker.
Re: Drinking Alcohol
For most Pakistanis it will be a deal breaker. There is a reason why this is the mother of all sins in Islam. It leads to more sins. If someone is OK with it and the partner is responsible then it can work. Christians are allowed to drink in their religion and Muslim men are allowed to marry their women. It can work in certain situations but why go through all that when you can have a spouse that doesn't drink.
Begum asked me to give up booze and cigarettes before we got married so i did.
Instead I started doing bhang and chewing tobacco and niswar
She took the condition off...women..,so confusing

I agree with saeedinpakistan.. Smoking bothers me a lot more than a person who occasionally drinks..
I'm tolerant of it because I've been around it and it hasn't affected me in a direct way.. There are a lot of other things which would dirctly impact me during marriage but an ocassional drink is not one of them..
We love to think that other people's sins are worse than those which we commit ourselves when the truth is they often aren't.. In our culture drinking is obviously a social taboo for most.. It kinda reminds me of the way we judge Muslim women who show their legs (when we show our arms in Pakistan.. since when did Allah allow that either?) or the fact that most live in joint families with bils around which is supposed to be 'death' in Islam.. It's kinda hypocritical to point fingers at others and conveniently forget our own sins.. We all do it (well 99% of us lol).. just in different ways..
