. Instead the 'seats' should be given to those pakistanis who will stay in the country and practice medicine.
what should be the criteria which will confirm that a student being admitted to a professional college will not leave the country and will definitely work 10 years from now...??
I know someone who had leukemia and went to medical school and had to take a year off in the 4th year.Or someone who died of an aneurysm in third year of medical school. The government should do health screenings to make sure these people dare not get admission into any school or college because if they are not able to work then its such a waste...!!
i would have to agree with PCG, roughly 70% of the females in my husband's graduating class are mothers of 1-2 children, and never even bothered to take usmles..the ones who remained in pak are all married...ie not working.
its sad..because pak govt partially pays for the students' "seats" in med school..and all that govt money goes to waste. Instead the 'seats' should be given to those pakistanis who will stay in the country and practice medicine.
Tammy, read above. This is exactly what I'm talking about. Is it ok that your tax money goes to subsidize seats for women who are not sincere about the field in the first place?
Someone asked what can be done to fix it...not sending people into med school so early, doing better interview screenings, requiring some demonstration of work to show how sincere you are about the career, improving the post-med school financial roadblocks, and making students pay penalties for quitting med school or not practicing for a given number of years. People should not be allowed to friggin' leave the country until they pay their penalty. That will make in-laws think twice before taking people out of the field.
Or only subsidize those seats in which you sign a contract saying you'll serve on Pakistani soil for X number of years before making any decision to abandon the field. That way, tax money and international loan money doesn't get funneled into wasted seats.

Do you realize that at the time of admission into medical colleges people are just 18 years old! At that age they arent sure of what they are getting into. So many guys get into med colleges and drop out or start working for pharmaceuticals after graduation. Most smart guys actually go for USMLEs or australian boards and get out of the country. So for you to blame rishta seeking mbbs girls for not serving the contry is totally unjust. So many girls go into engineering, law, other majors where they DON'T actually end up working at all. Do you know many women are enrolled at karachi university? Thousands and thousands. Aren't they wasting the tax payers money?
And if the majority of women doctors weren't practicing, they would have been a severe shortage of women doctors in the hospital but thats not the case. There are tons of ob/gyn in pakistan, I have never had a hard time getting an appointment with any. If majority if girls were in it just for rishta, there would have been a severe shortage in gyn/obs department because pakistani male doctors almost never go into that field of medicine.
So your theory of women wasting seats is totally flawed.
PCG, if you are looking to blame anyone for the healthcare crisis, blame the govt for allocating such a tight budget on healthcare where as they spend majority of all the money on defense. They keep testing missiles, investing money on fighter jets and what not whereas the public health sector barely gets anything. Shortage of doctors in govt hospitals is simply because govt is not hiring many doctors because they can't pay them.
Someone needs to pay the doctor, either the patient or the govt.
How exactly is it Dr. Shaistas fault again?
You keep saying how doctors shouldn't be allowed to leave the country. Well, do you ever stop and think WHY they leave? Simply because there's much more money abroad than there is in Pakistan. If the govt were to pay these doctors, they could have a decent life here and wouldn't leave. None of the doctors working in private hospitals in pakistan ever want to leave. All the doctors employed in Aga khan and other large private ones are earning so much and doing pretty well that they don't consider leaving the country. How come American or british or Canadian doctors don't leave thier respective countries? It's because they are getting paid well and have no reason to leave.
Tammy... its not about money, or crappy healthcare in Pak or going abroad ... its just that khawateen on GS are all jealous of doctors being able to get a nice bakra for shadi.
