A central Pakistani cabinet minister was severally beaten and injured by angry people in the port city of Karachi when he arrived to attend funeral of a slain prominent Sunni Muslim cleric on Friday, witnesses said.
Mufti Attiqur Rahman, 55, deputy of a major religious seminary Benuri Town was shot in his car by unidentified gunmen on Thursday night. His colleague in the vehicle later died of his injuries.
Deputy Minister for Religious Affairs Dr. Aamir Liaquat Hussain was caught and severally beaten by the angry people at the funeral. He was later kept in a hostel room of the seminary.
Witnesses said Hussain was injured and some people rescued and shifted him to a room.
Hussain, belongs to Mutahida Qaumi Movement, which is coalition partner of the ruling Muslim League. He is also host of a religious program on a private TV channel.
“I was injured. I was beaten and was confined in a room,” Hussain told reporters in Karachi from his mobile phone. He also phoned to authorities, appealing them to save him as he faces danger.
Karachi was on alert on Friday following the murder of two clerics.
Mufti Rahman’s funeral was held in the city amid tight security.
A number of activists from his seminary came out on the streets in the SITE area of the city on Friday and pelted vehicles with stones but were dispersed by police.
Mufti Rahman had been returning from delivering Koran lessons at a city mosque on Thursday evening when gunmen on a motorcycle fired shots into his vehicle, police said.
Mufti Rahman’s 10-year-old son, Imad, was also wounded and is in a stable condition in hospital.
