Pakistani doctor who helped US in bin Laden raid sentenced to prison | Fox News

PESHAWAR, Pakistan – A Pakistani doctor who helped the U.S. track down Usama bin Laden was convicted of high treason Wednesday and sentenced to 33 years in prison, officials said, a verdict that is likely to further strain the country’s relationship with Washington.

Shakil Afridi ran a vaccination program for the CIA to collect DNA and verify bin Laden’s presence at the compound in the town of Abbottabad where U.S. commandos killed the Al Qaeda chief last May. The operation outraged Pakistani officials because they were not told about it beforehand.

Senior U.S. officials have called for Afridi to be released, saying his work served Pakistani and American interests. His conviction comes at a sensitive time because the U.S. is already frustrated by Pakistan’s refusal to reopen NATO supply routes to Afghanistan. The supply routes were closed six months ago in retaliation for American airstrikes that killed 24 Pakistani soldiers.

Afridi also was ordered to pay a fine of about $3,500 and will spend an additional three and half years in prison if he does not, said Nasir Khan, a government official in the Khyber tribal area, where the doctor was arrested and tried.

**Afridi was tried under the Frontier Crimes Regulations, or FCR, the set of laws that govern Pakistan’s semiautonomous tribal region. Human rights organizations have criticized the FCR for not providing suspects due process of law. There is no right to legal representation, to present material evidence or cross-examine witnesses. Verdicts are normally handed down by a Khyber government official in consultation with a council of government elders.
**
Afridi has the right to appeal the verdict, said Iqbal Khan, another Khyber government official.

Re: Dr Afridi gets 33 years imprisonment

I wonder why he wasnt tried in a regular court under regular Pak law? Why did they go for a tribal court? Perhaps because of the quicker turn around time?

Personally, I think that he would have gotten a similar punishment in a regular court. In addition to treason, I would have even tried him for the fake vaccination drive. That is medical malpractice at worst.

Re: Dr Afridi gets 33 years imprisonment

^ I think they have tried him in FATA because of FCR where there is no legal representation, witnesses required etc. From ordinary courts he might have been freed due to the witness laws.

Re: Dr Afridi gets 33 years imprisonment

Further shows what we've known all along, large parts of the Pakistani government protects terrorists and will punish those that help expose them. Does anyone here really think Bin Laden would have been found at that compound if the US. would have given Pakistan a heads up about his location?

Re: Dr Afridi gets 33 years imprisonment

^ agreed, by the way what punishment have the Americans given to the so called masterminds of 911 in their custody for the past 10 years?

Ramzi Binalshibh was arrested in September 2002, Khalid Sheikh Muhammad arrested in March 1 2003, Mustafa Ahmad al-Hawsawi March 2003, Ali Abd al-Aziz Ali March 2003 and Waleed bin Attash April 2003.

Still the trial hasn't commenced, such is the importance and urgency of the case.

Re: Dr Afridi gets 33 years imprisonment

Right decision. He deserved it not because he helped finding Osama but because he worked for foreign secret service....

It also tell how useless he was for CIA once he finished his work. He would have been out of Pak if he was that imp.

Dr Afridi gets 33 years imprisonment

He should hvinform pakistani authorities ..

Re: Dr Afridi gets 33 years imprisonment

^^^ I think he was wrongly convicted and getting wrongly punished.

If I was president of Pakistan, I would have made him head of ISI and would have given to him Sitara-e-Imtiaz. He succeeded where both ‘ISI and CIA’ together failed, that is to locate OBL without even OBL, AQ, or even ISI knowing about it.

Re: Dr Afridi gets 33 years imprisonment

and that is why you are not the president of Pakistan :)

Re: Dr Afridi gets 33 years imprisonment

People in the White House and Pentagon won't happy over it. I hope they would have consulted them before taking this step. Otherwise, get ready for some more bills in the US Congress against Pakistan.

Re: Dr Afridi gets 33 years imprisonment

Jahaan satyanaas, wahaaan sawa satyanaas :)

Dr Afridi gets 33 years imprisonment

Don u all think punishing afridi will send the mesg to "Amerika"that if Pakistan knew abt osama through afridi earlier then wht would hv happened to him ?

Nice decision and verdict

Re: Dr Afridi gets 33 years imprisonment

There will be few people here too, who will probably support him, but this guy acted against the law and was a traitor under any definition possible. He deserve it.
Good decision, let him rot in jail. I would be more happy if he was given death sentence.

But oh well :chai:

Re: Dr Afridi gets 33 years imprisonment

You are right. For becoming President of Pakistan, one has to be crook of immense credential. :)

Re: Dr Afridi gets 33 years imprisonment

Although the goal he achieved was worthy of merit, the fact remains that despite being a Pakistani citizen, he worked for a foreign intelligence agency without openly disclosing this to the relevant Pakistani authorities.

Worse than this, he used an anti-polio campaign as a front for his intelligence-gathering work. In doing so, he had endangered anti-polio campaigners who work in low-security areas, as he will now cause militants in those areas to view anti-polio health workers as potential foreign intelligence assets.

Polio is a clear and present danger to tens of thousands of children in rural and urban areas of Pakistan. This man's effort may well condemn many children to living as cripples. Is that a worthwhile price to pay?

Re: Dr Afridi gets 33 years imprisonment

Traitor is the one who sell the country or do something to harm the country. Afridi did nothing of that sort. Afridi did not sell Pakistan neither he did anything that harmed Pakistan.

On the other hand, people who are holding office of responsibility in Pakistan are doing everything to harm Pakistan in every way, financially as well as administratively along with mega corruption and nepotism. They are also selling Pakistan to anyone who is willing to pay handsomely (just like Zia-ul-Haq who rejected peanuts as price of Pakistan but accepted the price when offered handsomely).

As far as I am concerned, those who deserve Punishment is not Afridi, but they are Zardari, Gillani, Nawaz, Shahbaz, Kiyani, Iftikhar, etc … who are holding offices, power or position, but are harming Pakistan to the best of their ability on daily basis.

Re: Dr Afridi gets 33 years imprisonment

^ But Osama was in Abbotabad during Musharraf’s tenure too.
