Kaleem, I have seen situations like that too. But in the end, it all evens out yeah? THose who lean on their color, race, religion, country of birth in order to further themselves in their careers all find themselves hitting the fabled glass ceiling no matter what level of skill they have. I've seen this many times in my work in corporate america. Anyone who uses the things mentioned above in the same paragraph as bonus, promotion, advancement...might as well pack it in now and get used to the same-old-same-old paycheck cause they just slammed themselves in the head with that glass ceiling. Its even becoming more acceptable to openly admit it. One of the worlds largest financial institutions held a "town meeting" where anyone could express concerns and one "woman of color" began soap-boxing about the lack of such within the high ranks....the CFO with much class explained to her that promotions from within the company are indeed a company goal but the FOCUS and the reward of higher positions are based PURELY on results...not on race, color, creed, religion, sexual preferences etc.
And you know, corporate america doesnt CARE about those things. They care about RESULTS...give em results and I dont care if you're a metro sexual, lesbian, gay, Muslim, christian, are green, blue black or yellow...give em results and you'll go on up the ladder.

I think its fine to start a discussion based on personal experiences, and its ok (though not preferred) to put out statistics (like 90%) without any basis, simply to make a point. After all, most people generally discount such out of whack statistics anyway. What I am not sure is what do you want to discuss: That the big bad lesbian black woman in Kaleem's college days was a dirtbag who was there to screw the organization that was feeding her? I mean, I can see how some people think affirmative action is past its due date and should be reverted to full merit based system; and I can see how some people will get offended at the extra length law goes to protect the perceived injustices over the minorities, but short of comprehensive tort reform or repeal of Section X (or whatever section it is that talks about EOE and discrimination), I am not sure what you want to discuss. You remove barriers on discrimination and next thing you know your neighbors in the nice white neighborhood of Houston that you live in may petition you to be kicked out of the neighborhood solely because you are a bonafide brown; or the car salesman at the Chevy dealership doesn't want to sell you the new Silvarado you want. Hypothetically speaking, of course.
Faisal, remember why we come to this place. To Have Fun. Now, all of your so called hypotheticals can come true, it will not change my opinion about those folks taking advantage of their situation. It happens all around us, some of us who live in liberal places are immune to it by now (unfortunately). I am sure you are A OK funding a gay partner's medical expense for your city government...guess how did that happen, because those sickos took advantage of their situation and politicians with no back bone passed that as law.
Romeo, just open your eyes and you will see this happening all over US.

UTD, What have you been smoking? Do you see me complaining or suing anyone because I am a muslim. I do not flaunt my minority status and nor do I expect special treatment because of it.
It is folks like you who look the other way and think that it is ok for those listed in the first post to keep getting special treatment and keep getting away with it.

Kaleem, where I'm from and where you are from you are legally allowed to discriminate against gays. While I find that to be truely pathetic it's clear you don't and you even say that they get special treatment. And people like you who have this notion that they get speacial treament undoubtly treat such people different in a negative way and you may not even know you are doing so.

If gays are getting a right (e.g. to claim medical expenses for their partner) that straights (or non-gays) are not, then definitely thats a problem. I agree with you there. Is that what you are saying? Or are you saying that you are ok with one person getting the benefit (hetro), but not the other (homo)?

i'm really fed up with how gays/blacks/Hispanics...are given special privileges..i mean really. I thought that they were doing this to stop the discrimination..but isnt that discrimination towards other minorities? I mean i get it..if you're gay you get people who're really ignorant. I get that people are still racist..and i understand that some people can't speak English but really. It's just not fair anymore.

I worked for a large publicly traded comapny in the '90s. I was good friends with the legal department folks, and we started talking about what they pay. When a minority or a woman was fired, and they retained a lawyer our legal department would automatically figure on paying $5k to 10k per case to defend the case. If they could settle the case for less than that it was a victory. The facts did not matter, anybody who was willing to retain a lawyer pretty much got paid off.

Kaleem, before anyone gets their marriage partner medical coverage you should check their penis to find out where it has been. Also people should have to pass a moral exam before they get such benefits from the city. We can have the Taliban create the moral code.
