I dont find anything wrong in the haq meher.. thats wht ur sposed to give her, n neither you nor her family is allowed to touch it.
I find the whole rishta process to be uhm.. superficial for lack of a better word. its all about credentials, ur looks/job/money/education.. then comes personality n stuff, n for most ppl who place more importance on “credentials” dont usually care about personality 
U can start meeting grls on your own like you said, but one bit of advice if u dont mind 
when you meet that person, morel ikely than not it’ll be out of chance..
