Why do anyone in any country would pay tax?

Normally govt collect money from the citizens and pay them back by providing infrastructure, security, and take stand for their interest.

In Pakistan, whatever tax i pay is not counted, and still the economy is in bad shape, from last 30 years i am hearing experts saying that Pakistan may default if IMF didn’t lend them money… last year Pakistan’s minister of Finance said that they don’t have enough funds to pay salaries… so my little contribution, what ever it may be, is not helping anyone anymore…why bother paying… why not save for my family…

I pay tax only to be beaten and robbed by Police, only to be killed by local and foreign thugs, only to be killed in missile attacks, only to be killed in suicide blasts… why i need to pay for these services offered by the govt of Pakistan… i can have it for free and only reason i am unable to avail it is because it is not my turn and not because some security agency of Pakistan making it safe for me..

I pay tax just and later find out that the politicians, the govt. officials, the security officials have made properties worth of billions out side Pakistan, their families are living like kings out of my money and me is scared to death about the safety of my family and myself, me is working by brains out to meet the ends… why should i pay tax to provide a lavish life style to these ugly politicians…

I pay tax and die in local hospital because of lack of facilities, the top politicians who don’t pay any tax, get to go to UK and USA for their treatment as they know that the health system in Pakistan is not trustworthy… and their treatment is done from my tax money… why not i save that tax money and buy my self a healthy life…

I pay tax, just to get beaten/harassed by the police, if i protest against anything, these govt paid officers comes out with the big guns and canes and least they do is beat the hell out of me if they don’t shoot me… why would i pay to anyone to beat me out… i must be stupid to do it…

If anyone here thinks i should pay tax, please let me know why???

U pay tax to sustain a huge army that's sucking the very life out of this nation, like a leech.

^^ I don't want any army who is not going to protect me, so my stance still stand to not to pay any tax.. the army or the govt can beg US to provide them with the funds, why come to me???

Agreed 110%! The Pak Army is little more than a mercenary force hired by the US. People say: Respect the Pakistan Army! I have no respect for an institution that has gobbled up all of Pakistan's wealth and forced it's citizens to sleep on the streets while even Lieutenants get a thousand compensation packaged (health care, ration, land and all that).

not right to blame army only, the civil service who have made much more than the army have done, these were the people whom we pay from our money, and they failed to make one good university or a hospital in the country... same goes to politicians... the combo of Army+Politicians+Civil Service have brought the country to this stage....

Right man, but you gotta accept that the army hasn't really allowed the system to evolve. If there had been fair elections every 5 years from 1947, most corrupt politicians would have been filtered out, don't you think.

And also, I'm not talking about the corruption alone. The army gets a lot of perks. Every year, land worth billions of rupees is given away to army officers when they retire. And the generals, the perks they receive is the height of wastefulness.

And the expenditure on the army is so large that every year, huge budget deficits are created. And these budget deficits are the reason why Pakistan can't stand against the US. You can't really bite the hand that feeds you.

Also, the huge army budget is the reason why there is such a low budget for education. And you know it's only education that can get a country like Pakistan (with high population and low resources) out of this mess.

The question is, how long will this unsustainable cycle go on? I think a meltdown is coming and coming soon.

There is one constant thing history shows us, every time, when you have weak/incompetent leadership, the army of the same country or other country takes over...

Same is the case in Pakistan, the political and civilian leadership is incompetent and self-centered, all they care is about their personal interests, for this they don't mind if the Some General is on the seat or some Numb head like Nawaz Sharif or some evil like Zardari is leading the show...

In a country with a functional and less corrupt government than Pakistan, tax money is put to good use.

if you don't pay tax how will ISI and LeT get funded? sorry but that's the truth. Whatever the goals are, if you use wrong means it always backfires

this is such a bad attitude. do you think the limited services Pakistan does provide will get better if you dont pay tax? why do you think the tax payers who do pay tax should cover for your freeloading ass? Whatever you say of our hospitals they do serve most of the medical treatment that is provided in Pakistan. Whatever you say of our schools, those do provide for most school children. And as someone who studied in government colleges, and has all his family educated in government universities this sort of attitude, which is very common, I find complete BS.

Blame the politicians and abdicate your civic responsibilities.

Good, start with you and stop paying taxes to the government. Lets see how many follows you.:)

Anyway lots of filthy rich and elite class don't pay taxes in Pakistan. Only salaried class (they have no choice) and a few honest people pay the taxes on their actual earnings.

While the OP has a valid argument, not paying tax is not the solution since it would do away with the meagre public services we do have. It will be pretty difficult to improve the efficiency of our tax system however, the way I see it we are trapped in a vicious cycle:

  1. Uneducated awaam votes in corrupt leaders.
  2. Corrupt leaders won't reform the system, introduce transparency or increase the education budget, hence our awaam remains illiterate.
  3. Uneducated awaam votes in corrupt leaders all over again.

BY Limited services you mean... Load-shedding of Gas and Electricity to the Industrial unit??? once these units are off, then there will be no tax from these businesses in addition to the unemployment created by the LIMITED services of the govt. How long would any or these thugs/govt need to improve their services??? oh i remember, they didn't have to> Zardari lives in UAE, Sharifs have their lavish apartments and houses in UK, Altaf is not going to come to Pakistan in near future and Asfand Yar Wali has house in UAE and US too.... so why should they bother, the moment they go out of power, they are going to blame institutes for rigging and their vacations will begin..of course on my tax money!!!

SO they should consider your ass??? please don't make me use the words i am not use to, because then you go running to the mods ...

I clearly asked to provide me the reasons to pay tax... but i guess your peanut size brain missed it... if you have anything valid to add, please contribute...

I wish it goes to the army.. most of it goes to few generals or corrupt officers.. how do you think Pervaiz Musharaf end up having condos in UK???

That is why i said i am not going to pay any tax from now!!! these corrupt leaders have point agenda, NO development whatsoever... that is why they don't spend on education and development of people... yet their own children, studies abroad and occasionally pay visit to Pakistan, saying, it is backward country, no body tells them, and they are stupid enough to not to realize that the country is illiterate because of the policies their parent adopted...

The services in the govt hospital are limited ( apart from few cities) that there non-existence won't be noticed!!! same goes to other sectors, Police and security system is threat to the common man of Pakistan, these security people will secure all the corrupts and won't miss a chance to hit us or loot us... i think we won't miss them either.... the looters ( in the govt and out of govt) are at loose, people are dying left, right and center... peoples are mugged and robbed in the broad day-light, what is the use of cops??? i won't miss them, in fact i would be able to protect me and my family better...

Once i know that govt is not going to educate me, then i would do something to educate me family... so i won't be missing in that department as well..

so again what would i miss if i don't pay taxes???

Out of 1.7 tax paying people , 1.6 are in lowest bracket. and the earning from the income taxes is not significant.
Poor in pakistan pay tax or subsidize rich.
Not paying income tax doesnt bother govt anyways, they can get it from you via increase in fuel prices or levy sales tax etc.
