Re: ==Donating Blood!

But that isn't the case for most people.

Re: ==Donating Blood!

I fainted too!

But it's such a noble thing to do!

Re: ==Donating Blood!

donated twice.. felt just normal. Little dry mouth , but it was good after drinking juice.

ps: reminded me of a joke lol...

there was once a very skinny guy who went to donate blood.
The doctor injects and start pulling out the blood. Doctors found out that he lost his senses.
The doctor then put two bottles of blood on him. After gaining sense.. he screamed " thats it?.. if you want more..go ahead "

Re: ==Donating Blood!

I have always wanted to but never made an effort (as of yet).

Re: ==Donating Blood!

I would love to and tried but cant as im anaemic...

Re: ==Donating Blood!

okay this shows most of the guys are fine, and girls faint/dont feel too good.
I tried today, didnt have enough time so will go again tomorrow.I have been refused previously as I was anaemic.

Would you guys register to Donate Bone Marrow for a POSSIBILITY of Donation??It comes back just like Blood?

First of all, yes, I’ve donated blood several times and felt fine afterwards. I am not scared of needles, in fact, I look at the needle when I am being poked and I watch the blood flow into the bottle :devil: There are always snacks, juices, and t-shirts to look forward to, and I have never worn any of those t-shirts :smack:

About the bone marrrow, I attended a 14-Aug concert earlier this month and parents of a 13-years old girl were there urging people to register and give sample of their DNA to see if they can help their daughter. My wife and I registered. They said that they will use the BLOOD and they will NOT use the traditional method (whatever that is) to get the marrow. As long as they take my blood, I am okay and that’s why we registered. If my blood cells (attributes or whatever) match and I can save a life, I would be pleased.

Re: ==Donating Blood!

I may not register myslef but if I come across anyone whose life can be saved by my marrow donation .. .no problemo at all ..

Is it Project Vaney that you are talking about.
And its really good that you have donated blood.
I am also registered for the bone marrow..the likely of gtting a exact match is 1 in 41000 and for minorities like us, its really really slim.
It is an amazing way to try to help someone in their struggle for saving a life. I wish more Desi’s would register to be a possible donor if there ever is a need.
National Marrow Donor Program
there are so many negative fears I would say about people registering esp us Muslims as most people think it will be too painful(not true that happens with the biopsy ones)
Also for Minorities they donot ask for the money that it takes to get it registered as there is such a need for minorities and they have enough funding for those.

Tariq its not that you have to donate donate at the moment. You have to match completely to be able to donate.Our ethnic background has to match along with other specific traits. For minorities like us there is such a shortage.Please take a moment to look at this website's faq's.Also for minorities they donot charge the amount as there is enough funding to cover the cost of them registering minorities like us

Re: ==Donating Blood!

Ok ASK, you made a good point. Inshallah I am going to go to the website and resgister myself.

You will Inshallah!!..That would really be great:yahoo:..or was it a “maybe” or a yes…If you want me to I can ask or try asking for a kit from them tomorrow.( I dont know if hey would give it to me though!

Re: ==Donating Blood!

:hmmm: your over enthusiasm is very suspicious in nature. Are you sure that you are not a part of Human Organ Mafia

Hehe, whatever you think is OK is OK with me. You can ask or I can ask myself

:cb:..I am just too happy if its a yes. The reason is I feel passionately about this cause as I have been in a pediatric oncology floor of a Children’s hospital and I have seen Babies hooked up to machines.It was one of the hardest things I have ever seen. I have seen a close friend battle her 3 year old’s cancer condition. I cannot imagine how it would feel if it was my child.
I try to put myself in their shoes and it is the hardest thing. Do you know there are nly couple of ways we can try to help others.
1 donating money(we dont really see the impact.
2.Donate blood
donate organs (only kidney at this moment if we are alive or most of them after we die
donate marrow and we meet the life that we may be able to meet.The patients that use your marrow literally takes on your blood type…they become a part of you..as the saying says blood is thicker then water.

Re: ==Donating Blood!

No no I will do it inshallah .. I just need to take care of this advice from the website

Discuss your decision with your family or friends when you join the NMDP Registry. You may need their support if you are ever contacted as a match.

Its all part of understanding the committment.

Really, if we can save lives and live a healthier life ourselves, why not. It would be a very human thing to do

Re: ==Donating Blood!

Ask To be honest, I don't remember the name of the project. All I remember is that the parents of that girl were really encouraging everyone to give their saliva samples to test for a match. As you said, the chances that someone's DNA will match are very rare, but there is that slight possibility. Also, as you said, with us minorities, it's even harder because not too many of us are registered and for marrow, not only does the blood has to match but the other characteristics of the blood and DNA have to match as well. The father of that girl was a pediatrician and the mother was a nurse.
