re: Donate a LIFEBOX For your Pakistani Brothers in Need.
GL,
Please watch the video....you'll find that this box is meant to provide temporary sustenance....."until the next drop reaches them". They have asked specifically that we not include items that would require prep work (i.e. cooking etc. like daal, chawal, masalas).
I'm sure that the cost of the contents can be much reduced depending on where you purchase the items.
The sheet does not have to be 100% cotton......just a sheet, even if it is a poly-cotton blend will do. You can likely pick up a bolt of fabric from a warehouse etc and cut it up into 10 foot lengths and it will do.
If you can afford to include potato chips do so.....if your budget allows you to include granola bars, great........and if you can go the step further and put in protein bars, that's even better. May the Almight reward you all.

Thanks Muzna. Can you tell I didn't watch the video yet? I'm at work and videos are blocked! Thanks for the clarification. I agree with you saying to put what people can afford.
re: Donate a LIFEBOX For your Pakistani Brothers in Need.
Gorilady...I agree with you that the contents of the box aren't that nutritious...
As Muzna said and is in the video, they need stuff that can be consumed as soon as they get it....
The population which will consuming these goods have never had protein bars or granola bars etc (the healthier alternatives),so there is a high chance they might go waste...
I read somewhere that protein bars were not a hit amongst the earthquake victims a few year ago ...
Also someone suggested somehwere the use of trail mixes with almonds/peanuts/dried fruits/chocolate etc...Nuts are a good thing, but Pakistanis are not too keen on consuming the 'garam' nuts, especially when it is summer season now over there...
I was thinking last night what can be even slightly better than potato chips...something which their palates will not reject and thus wont go waste...wasn't able to think of anything...
any suggestions..??

Re: Donate a LIFEBOX For your Pakistani Brothers in Need.
yaar those people are starving... potato chips are perfectly for them,... will give them sodium and carbs/calories that they need. Same goes with chocolate bar, high sugar and will give them calories.
kit kat, twisk...both are good, even if they melt, they will still get the biscuit/waffer to eat.
Re: Donate a LIFEBOX For your Pakistani Brothers in Need.
Has anyone gotten through to the contact number listed for Canada??
Re: Donate a LIFEBOX For your Pakistani Brothers in Need.
I haven't tried.
Since I am working with The Imran Khan Foundation I am able to drop the boxes of at their local office and the folks from there will take care of transporting to the cargo warehouse for PIA.
Re: Donate a LIFEBOX For your Pakistani Brothers in Need.
I think this is a fantastic idea but I have one concern. I think the potato chips are a horrible idea and should be replaced with something healthier. They are devoid of nutrients and the bags might even pop before arrival in PK.
Also for the juice boxes, please spread the word that they should be 100% juice. These poor starving people are going to be needing all the nutrients they can get to help strengthen their bodies against disease.
The reason I am so sensitive to this is because I have BSc in Nutrition!
Does anyone know who decided on the contents of the Life Boxes? Perhaps there was a reason for those specific contents but if not, let's try to come up with the most nutritional bang for the buck, so to speak. Thoughts?
What about sending daal, channa, chowl, some masala? Do the flood affected people have access to fire/stove? Perhaps we should be putting a cooking pot, and a bunch of daal in the box as well. Daal is compact yet hugely nutritious (fibre, nutrients and protein).
I realise these people are probably desperate for anything source of sustenance at this point but I really feel in my heart that we should make it as good as we can!
I actually agree with the lady here. I think sara and a couple of other people might be able to enlighten us more but there are a ton of otehr alternatives to chips and candy bars. Right now it sounds something like a wish list for 8 year old kid, I think people should use their knowledge and pack in handy alternatives for things. I know and understand that it might not be popular with people but medicine is never popular with kids but you still give it to them. When it comes to food and things that they are relying on survival, I would rather send something thats more beneficial to them.
Re: Donate a LIFEBOX For your Pakistani Brothers in Need.
Fakhr e alam is hosting a lifebox telethon live from new york on Geo this sunday, 1 pm - 4pm (eastern time) and 10 am (west coast) I am sure he will be able to go into details regarding the contact info in US and Canada and the delivery and distribution process. Since he has been to the effected areas personally and knows the ground situation better he will know exactly what needs to go in the boxes, great opportunity to call in with questions.
Re: Donate a LIFEBOX For your Pakistani Brothers in Need.
Do we have the most updated list for the life box available?
Also, where are you guys buying these boxes? How much does it cost?
Did anyone deliver these boxes to NY? where is the PIA office?
Re: Donate a LIFEBOX For your Pakistani Brothers in Need.
*I think there hasn’t been any changes in the contents of the box ,after the one where they said not to add mosquito repellent and instead add a sheet…
*I havent been able to find a box with the exact dimensions…I have asked the husband to see if he can get some from his work where supplies etc come in boxes…he will know by Monday…
otherwise the closest I can find in size and something which is not that pricey is this…
*I know someone from here is taking them to NY on the 7th of next month…I saw the NY address somewhere…I will see if I can find it again.
I have bought the contents already,I got everything except for the milk. Not sure where I can find something which does not need refrigeration..
Also I did not find the ORS sachets…just the ready to use stuff, but that would increase the weight a lot more.
Any ideas on that..where to get those sachets in the US??
