no...not necessarily in this world...most punishments will be meted out after death, starting from your time in the grave and all the way to Hell...if one gets punishment in this world in the form of sickness and sorrow, it's a way to pay for your sins and get forgiveness as long as it's NOT shirkl or it doesn't relate to human rights volations. :)
I thought Karma was about saat janams and being born and again and again in different forms based on your actions...like if you were a bad human you'd born as a bear in next janam?

I think that may be the original idea but it's quite popular in the west as there being a universal force which will reward you if you do good and will punish you if you do bad in the same life. I guess it's a concept that has changed with time :)
If a person came back as a sacred cow that was fed and worshipped a lot was that person good or bad in a previous life?
Serious question
Is it even possible to come back as a sacred cow? Aren't they a form of deity? I don't think that's an option in reincarnation, you reincarnate from human to animal/insect but not into a 'God' as far as I know.
Karm literally translates to action or what you do. The concept of karm can easily be explained as "you sow what you reap." I do not believe in a eternal being watching our karms and judging us and hence rewarding or punishing us, but in that our actions and deeds define the person we become and hence lead to a better or worse quality of life we lead here.
About reincarnation, I guess it basically is an extension of the concept that the soul is eternal and the body temporary. This is a metaphor for me in that the soul is me, the life I have lived, my actions, my achievements. Long after I have physically gone, my soul will remain in the work (good or bad) I did while I was here.

karma is like third law of newton. for every action there is equal and opposite reaction.
regarding reincarnation, every person will be born among every kind of species and the cycle will continue until the day god destroys the creation to create it again. and when everything is destroyed, it means everything is reset even the gods.

Interesting question.
if you do enogh good in your lives then you break out of life and death cycle and attain moksha i.e. your souls atones with the god.
I am no expert and people generally dont research deep in to be but i think if you are well kept cow then you had done good in your previous life, if you are maltreated than there must be something wrong in your last life.
everyone has to be back as cow atleast once since you are supposed to take all life forms. soul has no shape or size or relations. it changes bodies in this world like human change its clothes.
but y

Human species is considered superior to everything else. So if a human is reborn as an animal (sacred or not) thats bad.
The other related concept is that you keep being reborn till you attain salvation at which time you are freed from this cycle of birth and death and go to paradise/heaven.
Interesting topic...sometimes I do feel karma is working against me....not in severe ways, but more like....inconveniences. Like if I fail to give up my seat for someone who needs it, I'll get "paid" back in a similar or equally annoying way

This is what I was talking about, I wasnt talking about reincarnation.
we just assume that whatever bad happens in our life must be the reaction of what we did to others. Its just our 'assumption' That's not entirely true though. The best of the best people also have had sorrows, pain and grief not because they did wrong to others, but because they're continuously being tested by God. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was the best of mankind and even then, He had to face many difficulties from His opponents. That is not to say that He wronged someone or that He was (nauzubillah) a bad soul in previous birth, because if He was, He wouldn't have been the best prophet of all.
This is what I was talking about, I wasnt talking about reincarnation.
but karma in its definition isnt just related to this life of ours but according to hindu scriptures, it goes to next birth if karma doesnt get u in this life in one way or another. You pay back in the next birth.

soul changes mortal bodies like human change their clothes.
So the karma is attached with the soul not with the body. your karma carries with your soul throughout your reincarnations.

I am not trying to mock u in any way
but if you are supposed to take all life forms, has everyone been a dinosaur or a dodo?
and it means millions and millions of reincarnations based on the sheer number of species
right?
if we follow the concept then it is quite possible that people were dinosaur or dodos too.
there are three worlds, swarg i.e. heaven where souls go and where gods live. no mortal can go there.
patal lok: i.e. under world. thats where king of hell lives
mrityou lok: i.e. mortal world or our world. in this world we are made from elements and we cannot live forever. be it on this planet or any other. so by extension of the logic may be a soul was born on those different planet in different eras as well.
Remember this is last leg of life cycle. world will be recreated after this but that time is billions of years away.
billions? whew,,,i thought u said millions and got worried :)
i find all religions fascinating, and really feel that in one way or the other they are really saying the same thing, the concepts may be different at some level but the general message ends up being similar
