Does Islam teach intolerance?

Re: Does Islam teach intolerance?

The really sad thing is that you really don’t know what’s wrong with this.

Re: Does Islam teach intolerance?

There are more informed people than myself who can do that.

I know that in more than a few places in Quran its stated

“in Allah a ma As sabireen”

translates to, God is with those with patience.

Last year when i went through a very tough time someone has sent me some info on sabr..which I would like to share with you all here except the personal words of encouragement that came with this

*SABR has been described in the Quran as one of the great virtues of the believers

What is SABR?

SABR has the following meanings:

Patience: the capacity to endure hardship, difficulty, or inconvenience with calmness, self-control and without complaint

Forbearance: Tolerance and restraint in the face of provocation

Composure: A calm or tranquil state of mind

Equanimity: The quality of being calm and even-tempered

Steadfastness: Quality of being, firmly loyal, unswerving and unchanging

Firmness: determination and resolution

Perseverance: Steady persistence in adhering to a course of action, a belief, or a purpose

Endurance: The act, quality, or power of withstanding hardship or stress

Self-constraint & Self-control: fettering, shackling of various urges, violent emotions and bad desires

In the Quran, SABR has been used in all the above meanings at different places as well as in the following meanings:

  • To maintain patience, composure, equanimity, self-control and endurance in the face of difficulties, hardships, stress or inconveniences that may come in living and doing things in the way Prescribed by Allah

  • To maintain determination, resoluteness, steadfastness and perseverance in abiding by Allah’s commands

  • To steadily adhere to the statutes of the Quran

  • To maintain constancy with Allah

In 70:5, Allah commands:

Faisbir sabran jameelan

Which means:

  • Persevere with the beautiful perseverance
  • Be patient with a beautiful patience
  • Be steadfast with the best steadfastness

Allah says in the Quran:

-O you who believe ! Be steadfast and be supreme in your perseverance [3:200]

-For your Lord’s [cause], be patient and steadfast [74:7]

-For every hardship, there is a relief or ease [94:5-6]

-Allah does not impose on any self any more burden that it can bear [2:286]

When to show SABR?

  • In harm, injury, mischief, damage, poverty, bodily affliction, distress, lack of means of subsistence, misfortune, calamity, a state of pressing want [show patience, endurance, equanimity and adherence to the Laws of Allah] [2:177]

  • In hunger

Re: Does Islam teach intolerance?

Sad ?

Being a Pakistani I should value other Pakistanis more than anyone else. Is this sad too ???

Well if yes then, I am relieved. Because I thought, we (Pakistanis) are biggest hypocrites on the face of the earth

Mr underthedome, if i am not wrong that you belong to human race, then it is common knowledge that mankind is divided into groups and races. and from the day one till today they avidly favor people of their own kind

Americans only care about the number of soldiers or national guards die in Iraq every day. They don’t give a damn about the numbers of Iraqies civilians meet their lord every day. The number may be in 10s or 100s, it does not matter.

Note that I am not critisicing Americans, but pointing out the human trait. We are all like that. For me a Pakistani christian is important, because he is Pakistani.
For me Muslim is more important than non-muslim, cuz of same group and beliefs.

I am afraid Mankind is not and has not been Politically correct in any era, any effort to paint it this way is mere hogwash. Jews will always see them as superior to gentiles, Christians will always believe that their sins are washed away. Muslims will keep dreaming that they are the best nation in the world

Re: Does Islam teach intolerance?

I would really love to see AK's response to this topic.

It is a matter of perception that muslims are taught to not respect people from other faiths. A lot of this is due to the media. It is also a fact that muslims themselves are at loggerheads with each other regarding whether it is right to respect a non-muslim.
As in every religion, even in Islam there are people who dont have any issues with religious intolerance.

Re: Does Islam teach intolerance?

^ Quran states that we have to treat non-muslims (generally all human beings) with respect, kind affection and justice....
ofcourse those who r trouble-makers (i.e. criminals) do deserve a harsh treatment, and that is just so fair i think....

Re: Does Islam teach intolerance?

Nice reply! Thanks Fraudia.

And can you tell us why Muslims are so impatient always…or we have not met Muslims?

Re: Does Islam teach intolerance?

//Quran states that we have to treat non-muslims (generally all human beings) // and why is that we still have people running around spreading hate !!!

Re: Does Islam teach intolerance?

Oh no, not again..one can go round and round in circles and end up with nothing achieved ...why do we have to believe that if muslims are not honest or are impatient ,it is due to islam?...If Israel continues to have an inhumane attitude towards the palestinians, does that mean jewdism preaches it?...If the the US, UK and thier allies continue to bully weaker nations, does that mean christianity preaches it..come on guys wake up!!....and by the way, some of us like to say that only fundamentalists do it..if that were the case then islam WOULD be to blame as being a fundamentalist actually means someone who actually follows the fundamentals ( basics) of that religion, and not like how the west have preferred to use the word, ie, individuals with extreme views ( please note, i have not used the word extreme muslims)

Re: Does Islam teach intolerance?

its not just muslims, its human nature…
u’ll find in america many people who have never known a muslim or hardly heard of Islam properly but will yet hate muslims…
u will find in india, many hindus who hate muslims, even if they have never dealth with a muslim in their life…

why???
some ppl like to play these games of making ppl hate others and use this hatred for their advantage…
so, as in all people, u will find muslims also who breed such hatred…
but this shud not be generalized to all muslims and one shud not conclude that Islam teaches such behavior…

Re: Does Islam teach intolerance?

I agree with armughal that this is due to human nature rather than ones religion.

Re: Does Islam teach intolerance?

You mean aside from nationalism?

Re: Does Islam teach intolerance?

In my opinion, this is because fundamentally the Old Testament is a violent document. It requires extra biblical text to tame it. So while followers of Islam, have to rely on outside sources such as ahadith to draw a violent interpertation from basically a non violent Quran, followers of the Bible have to reject the outside sources that moderate it to get a similarly violent interpertation. However, most westerners, born with a biblical background dont realize this subtle difference between the texts of the Old Testament and the Quran, in my opinion. Since, in their experience those who follow the Bible fundamentally are extremists, they assume it to be true about those who fundamentally follow the Quran too.

Re: Does Islam teach intolerance?

So you base your respect and value for people based on their skin color, nationality, and culture? At least you’re open and honest about your blatant racism.

Now is this what Islam teaches? This thread seems to shows there is split opinion if this is the case or not.

Re: Does Islam teach intolerance?

UTD do you equate giving preference to respect and lack of preference as disrespect?

Re: Does Islam teach intolerance?

Has nothing to do with Islam, it’s common sense. The question is, do we ignore our differences, or do we reconcile with them?

Some people who ask for ‘tolerance’ are in fact intolerant…they can’t stand the diversity and want some kind of homogenity…hence they ask for a universal ‘humanity’, which simply doesn’t exist.

The tolerant person is aware and mindful of the differences, and respects them. The bigoted person hates these differences, and wants to see everyone like them, no matter if the identity is Islamic, American, or even just “human” (which can be just a buzzward for an acceptable form of culture that is understood to mimic our own).

Re: Does Islam teach intolerance?

Any religion that claims to be perfect should rise above human nature and teach tolerance toward all and not base respect and value for people based on their skin color, nationality, and culture

Re: Does Islam teach intolerance?

No I don’t. What I’m seeing in code red is a sense that those unlike him are inferior, Now does he believe that this is a lesson that Islam teaches him, if so why?

Re: Does Islam teach intolerance?

glad that u realized that this is exactly what Islam teaches…
some of the quotes of the prophet (saw)…
nor arab is better than a non-arab or a non-arab better than an arab, nor white over black, nor black over white…
the best among u is the one most fearing of God…
all of u r from Adam (as) and Adam (as) was from dust…

Re: Does Islam teach intolerance?

^ It's not me that who need to realize that, but Muslims posting here who think differently...
