except couple of my doc friends(around 4-5) and one in our family(my hubbys brother ) who are arrogant and morons(unanimous opinion from us AND people who dont know them well) rest of my friends and family members who are doctors are really fun, with wonderful personalities, varied interests, and lovely people (there are about 50-55 in total that I know personally/v.closely). in my circle docs age varies from 20-60+(medical first year students to hard core highly accomplished individuals)
It all depends on their OWN personalities and not their profession, I saw how my husband’s only and elder brother turned into a weirdo in last 10 years, and I think sky is the limit for being a jerk. Hope hubby doesn’t see the post
Nobody in my family is interested in Doctors...i*t is perceived as marrying "down".* We are all businessmen and marry into other industrialist families. One of my cousins owns a hospital where he employs the same doctors (by the dozen) **you people **are going after left and right....
Please get off your high horse. Not everyone who marries a doctor does so because of the perceived wealth attached with that profession. Did you ever think that maybe they are attracted to the doctor's intelligence or humanity of the profession (i.e. saving lives etc.)? Or maybe they just like the person itself? A doctor is a very noble profession....it is not "marrying down."
Sorry, but I do not think you know even an iota of what you are talking about.
Like I said, a lot of hospitals do things to attract patients. It is not the doctors who get the chunk of money, since there is a huge difference in reimbursement between the hospital and doctors.
Somehow rich do ended paying for freebies to get good care.
What do you think where does all research money comes from? Govt.? No. it also comes from those rich patients who happened to be treated in the hospitals and either hospital get paid from their insurances or they later on donate to hospitals.
The doctors treat freebies on daily basis.
Doctors owned hospitals are treated badly by not only the govt. but also insurance companies who routinely give such a low fee schedule that hospitals cannot accept them. Many of these fee schedules are even lower than medicare fee schedule. And this is deliberate attempt to make these hospitals failed…despite the fact these hospitals provide better care compared to those hospitals which are owned by other entities. Simply because their lobby is much more powerful.
A whole lot of their work is not paid for and gets **written off.
**
Few doctors do try collection agencies but it really does not come even close to what they eventually get or patients simply file bankruptcy.
Doctors are one of few service providers who cannot take their unpaid bills as tax deductions.
Insurance companies find excuses not to pay for even saving lives of the patients and deny even appeals even if there is a minor mistake in claim filing. And they get a fixed time to appeal. Beyond that even if the correction were made, no payment is made.
Other trades such as Lawyers do not have a set fee schedule and can charge even for a text message or email at ridiculous amount but at least in US doctors cannot charge beyond what is allowed by third party payers.
There is freedom for any other trade or business to deny service if not paid in full but doctors cannot refuse care in hospitals for people who cannot pay.
Same way, hospitals are bound to treat anyone regardless of ability to pay once the person sets his/her foot in emergency room.
More regulations and rules, need for continuous education requirements apply to doctors than any other services.
There is no charge that can be made for phone calls, text messages or any advice from home by doctors.
Long hours which are spent do not commensurate with the payments they receive and every two years their reimbursement goes down despite even minimum wage for all has net increase every so often.
Salaries/benefits for those who are employed by doctors and hospitals does go up every so often, but doctors reimbursements keeps going down.
Isn’t it funny that inflation rate and price for everything goes up too, but doctors reimbursement keeps going down?
The overhead expenses keep going up. And recent electronic record requirement has also increased cost to run medical practice.
Even though incentive is given for electronic medical record, but other related expenses are much higher than incentives.
There is a new way of penalizing doctors and hospitals and many senseless rules are being made.
Anything spent on doctors by pharmaceutical companies at least in US is closely monitored and has become a public domain.
In Pakistan many of these rules do not apply but there are very few who actually get to take advantage for being doctors and owning their practice compared to those who work at fixed income.
leme just say this. i didnt read about 95% of your post nor do i plan to.
and stop picking on my posts, when everyone here has had some issue with that ridiculous hospital. i didnt bring it up. so muje maaf kero and save yourself all that typing. cuz im not about to read it after a tiring day.
I say in the past and more so in these days doctors, (including teachers, researchers, scientists etc.) are more noble than any other trades or professions.
A barely college grad can make millions… in sports… but people have audacity to criticize life savers, health providers.
but heres honestly what i think should happen in the states: med school tuition has got to go down! it just needs to. and yea docotrs are limited by way too much and nurses are taking over all of that. but i dont think doctors should be making what they make. but nor should their education cost that much.
actually, they can make whatever....if only desis hadnt adulterated the place with their bhayanak thoughts and ideas.
and yea you talk of saving lives. but healthcare is a huge business.

That's the problem, you don't want to be told other point of view.

Amount of work and time doctors spend on their training..is still much more than their reimbursement. Leaving aside how much they spend on their college fee, specialty training, workig long hours, CME, certifications, a lot of other expenses.

No one gives 'discount' to future doctors either.
ok valid points. so money is a factor. thats all i want people to accept. and yes they do work ridiculously long hours for money they make.
A lot of doctors are either because they have doctors in the family or they know it is a noble profession and has stability.
again, valid points and i agree. besides the it being a myth part
but you do need to meet some of the student body, its quite crazy. and theres so much competition and viciousness instilled in them just ot get ahead. but look at the irony. theyre in a noble profession which is supposed to do good for people. thats all that bothers me.

Nothing can take away for it being a noble profession. Not even if millions are paid to doctors, it will not be enough for saving precious lives.
Do you admit there IS no price for saving lives and making people healthy?
Myth I meant that doctors think they are going in to this profession just to save lives. In general it is not really true.
But there are doctors who work free and those who travel around the world with bare minimum salary or nothing.
Please visit free clinics and read about charity work by doctors.
Doctors are also politicians, poets, social workers, community leaders....one of those who donate at high amount to charity organizations.

** Do you admit their IS no price for saving lives and making people healthy?**
well if theres no price for it then, why is healthcare for so many so expensive :) why are people billed ridiculous amounts. and why do you wanna be reimbursed such high amounts.
you didnt have to bring your multi in. it was a fun discussion ntil you had to ruin it by doing that. im out.
The healthcare expenses are mainly because of multi-billion dollar insurance companies, pharmaceutical companies/device companies and disproportionate reimbursements between hospitals and doctors.
Please look up the salaries/benefits and bonuses CEO’s and employees of these entities make. Their stock values keep going up.
Doctors are not responsible for high health care cost but they get penalized every time a regulation is made. There are lobbyists and politicians who keep making ridiculous laws and regulations.
Do you know in US, doctors are being forced to leave their practices and join giant corporations since their expenses continue to go high and their payments keep decreasing?
